Dear Colleague:

Progressive Engineer, the online magazine and information source, has posted two new stories.
The feature talks about how John Deere Company has entered the field of precision farming by developing GIS-based systems that remotely guide tractors in fields. This yields more efficient farming operations, reducing costs and impact on the environment. A profile of Ahmad Qayoumi tells how the transportation engineer, who works for the city of Vancouver, Washington, volunteers his time to rebuild streets in his native Kabul in war-ravaged Afghanistan.

You can see these at http://www.ProgressiveEngineer.com

Thank you,

Hi all!

Need some help regarding modeling the support of a concrete beam. The support
happens to be a
shear wall. And really don't know for sure how to evaluate the rigidity of the
wall.
- How much length and height is engaged?
- Should we just consider having as support a column which size will be [width
of beam x thickness
of wall x height of wall] and therefore be below the actual rigidity? This last
point meaning
being unconservative as far as moment at top of column is concerned.

Thank you for sharing your expertise.

Subject: Searching for a widely accepted Definition of Civil Engineering
pigeonoo
Send Email Send Email

Dear Colleagues,

I am searching for a widely accepted/recognized definition of Civil
Engineering. I checked on the Internet and noticed that nearly every
university civil engineering department has their own defintions. They all
are right but I just want to have a general definition.

I noticed a definition given by the ASCE Board of Direction in 1961 as
follows

"Civil engineering is the profession in which a knowledge of the
mathematical and physical sciences gained by study, experience, and practice
is applied with judgement to develop ways to utilize, economically, the
materials and forces of nature for the progressive well-being of humanity in
creating, improving and protecting the environment, in providing facilities
for community living, industry and transportation, in providing structures
for the use of humanity."

The definition was given more than 30 thirty years ago. I wonder if some
ideas having emerged since then should be included in the definition (IT,
sustainability, operations research), and if some parts should be updated.
For example, it has been very important to provide "facilities
for community living, industry and transportation," and to provide
"structures
for the use of humanity." It seems equally, if not more, important today to
think about how to more efficiently use the existing
facilities/infrastructure.

BTW, I wonder if there is someone who knows a definition of civil
engineering given by a UK civil engineering authority or organization.

Many thanks in advance.

Sincerely,

Ethan

Engineers:

Architects, engineers, planners, and environmental scientists often require the
knowledge of a professional meteorologist to determine the expected normal and
extreme weather conditions at a particular project site. Such information is
critical in determining what environmental stresses need to be designed for to
ensure the survival of a building or other structure over its intended lifespan.
Weather elements such as wind, temperature, and precipitation (especially
snowfall) are some of the typical design factors that must be considered. In
coastal and offshore environments, waves, currents, and tides are also critical
to the establishment of design criteria for man-made structures. This branch of
the meteorological profession, known as engineering meteorology and we can meet
your needs! Check us out.
