Quoted Messages Snipped   Message List

FYI, Yahoo has slipped in a new "feature" to it's Groups service that automatically snips out the bulk of long segments of quoted text.   Yahoo is trying to force it's users to read all a group's messages in order (rather than reading old messages in the quoted "trail" at the bottom of a recent message).   I'm unaware of any way to disable this snipping.

As always, everyone should avoid the inclusion of extraneous quoted text or ads, keeping your own messages to the point and easy to read.   Including the text of all previous messages in every reply to a list message makes the list harder and slower to read, especially for folks who receive the daily "digest" version of the list.

If you quote a short passage of text in your own message, it will appear normally, like this:

My computer seems to chop out some of the emails in the trail of conversation

But if you quote a longer passage, like I do here:

My computer seems to chop out some of the emails in the trail of conversation.  Did I mention that my computer seems to chop out some of the emails in the trail of conversation.  Did I mention that my computer seems to chop out some of the emails in the trail of conversation.  Did I mention that my computer seems to chop out some of the emails in the trail of conversation.  Did I mention that my computer seems to chop out some of the emails in the trail of conversation. Did I mention that my computer seems to chop out some of the emails in the trail of conversation.  Did I mention that my computer seems to chop out some of the emails in the trail of conversation.

You'll notice, if you look closely at the middle of this quote block, a line like this:

...snip...

Which indicates that Yahoo cut out a bunch of text.   Obviously, none of your readers will be able to view that missing text in your message.   If the text was in a message they just recently received earlier in the same conversational thread, this may not be a problem, as it is probably both fresh in their mind and available for them to re-read (either in their own email program or on the Yahoo Group's web site.)

But, if you need to quote a block of text which is not readily available or memorable to your fellow subscribers, you'll want to AVOID using the quoted text format in your email.   Instead, perhaps you can put the text in traditional quotation marks, and perhaps blue text, like this:

"My computer seems to chop out some of the emails in the trail of conversation. Did I mention that my computer seems to chop out some of the emails in the trail of conversation.  Did I mention that my computer seems to chop out some of the emails in the trail of conversation."

This should prevent any automatic snipping.
