Well all,
Wife and I went out to the Observatory last night,
anad was all set to try out the Nikon D40, when I
could not find the darn remote.
So we just did some observing anyway.
We both saw some meteors .
Still we had a good time,
Alan

Hello, Siti,
So far, my only target has been the moon. I tried M13 but found that
my drive needs some attention. I'll post when I make some progress!

What I do.. Is just autofocus on Jupiter, the moon, or a bright star
such as Vega or Arcturus. Then i leave it on autofocus so the focus is
locked until i am just about to image. then i switch to manual.
It seems to work 99% of the time!
One complaint. Sometimes after an image the focus has shifted causing
for an another focusing session to be done. Which meanwhile takes less
then 5 seconds.

Hello Tracy!
What pics have you taken through your c8 with the D40? I will be trying
this setup soon and I'm wondering what objects I can target :)
Hoping for clear skies..

Hello..
yeah, I try and focus on a bright star first, but it is always a
problem of the awkward positioning of the camera especially for
objects high above the horizon, coupled with the fact that D40 has no
liveview on its screen. I recently bought 'imagesplus' to help me
with focusing the D40. I have not had the chance to try this out on
stars though.. weather not so good here either, it's the monsoon
season..
Hoping for clear skies soon..

Hey Alan,
Tricky! I have been having issues too... Some folks say to turn the
focuser manually all the way to the right, but this takes you past
infinity...
Try focusing on a very distant object first using autofocus (a distant
streetlight or something like that) and then switch over to manual and
leave focus as is...
Trial and error methinks...

Thanks, Alan! Lots still to learn though...
We were blessed with clear skies here tonight again. Dad and I drove
out into the local mountains for some more observing. I attempted
another shot of the Scorpius and Sagittarius region and came out with
a nicer image than yesterday's attempts. Good color of the central
Milky Way region, stars aren't pinpoint but oh well.

Hi Guys,
Alan: Still down under...
Took a couple of shots that have posted to my folder. Here's the blog
entry for each:
1. Southern Cross, Alpha and Beta Centauri. This is a popular sight
from Australia, and the Southern Cross itself is evident on the Aussie
flag.

2. Scorpius and Jupiter. Scorpius was almost at zenith tonight, with
Jupiter sitting behind it. Jupiter is the brighter object to the right
(blurred due to field rotation when trying to stack). Scorpius can
clearly be seen. The central bulge of the Milky Way can be seen as
well in this shot. The large greenish object at upper right is Dad's
tree top! If I had more battery power in my camera tonight I'd have
tried for more exposures.

Hi Siti,
In some case the camera might be modified, but in most cases the work
is done through such photo programs such as Photoshop where you can
bring out the colors and enhance the image,

Hi,
I am wondering, whether these pictures taken are from a modified D40?
Some photos don't indicate about any modifications done so I am not
sure if such stunning photos an be taken by a D40 straight out of the

Hi Siti,
Welcome to the group,
I have seen some Deep Sky objects with the D40,
I am going to try it when the weather corporates.
Do a Google search Astrophotography withe the Nikon D40.

Hello! I have recently bought a nikon D40 and have only managed to take

wonders, but it's been pretty ordinary, weather-wise.

Hey Alan,
To my knowledge, the answer is "no". There is some Nikon software that
allows you to capture images directly to the PC and control the
camera, but no live view per se. I think that's with the more advanced
cameras (more $$$).
There may be something else out there for the D40 but nothing I am yet
aware of. I just don't think the D40 is rigged to run with live view.

Thanks Alan! I have the remote too (using the cheaper model from
Ebay/Hong Kong) but it does the trick nicely. My scope still isn't
equatorially mounted so I am shooting at a handicap right now. Maybe
your scope has an equatorial setup?
To go to BULB, put camera in manual mode and then move the click wheel
to the left to get longer exposures. As you move the clickwheel, you
will see different shutter speed durations in the viewfinder (lower
left green illuminated numbers) You'll go through all the SECOND
exposure ranges like 1", 2" etc until you see this: "--" (two dashes,
no quotes) in the viewfinder display. That means BULB mode.

Have got the ball rolling with a few photos I took this past Friday
night. Not brilliant but they are my second attempt using the D40. The
M13 shot came out fairly well.
