Subject: CFP Session "Heritage in a Poscolonial Age", inaugural Association of Critical Heritage Studies conference, Gothenburg

 CALL FOR PAPERS

For the inaugural conference of the Association of Critical Heritage =
Studies
on the topic of =93Re-theorisation of Heritage=94 in Gothenburg, Sweden, =
5-8
June 2012
(http://www.gu.se/infoglueCalendar/digitalAssets/1775484548_BifogadFil_Co=
nfe
rence_Announcement_ACHS%202012_Third_CALL.pdf), I seek contributions to =
the
following session:=20
\
When =91the rest=92 enters =91the West=92: Heritage in a Postcolonial =
Age

=20

Since the beginning of modernity, international heritage tourists=92 =
travel
routes have typically led from =93the West=94 to =93the rest=94 of the =
world (=93the
West and the rest=94, cf. Stuart Hall). In the last few years, however, =
the
expansion and lower cost of travel opportunities on the one hand, and =
the
economic upturn in parts of the global =93East=94 and =93South=94 on the =
other hand,
have made western destinations accessible for more and more people from =
the
former =93rest of the world=94 in the framework of leisure-time =
travelling.=20

=20

This session enquires whether and how western-influenced patterns of =
world
order, constructions of identities, as well as interactions in tourist =
space
change when =93the West=94 no longer tours =93the rest=94, as has been =
practiced for
centuries, but when =93the rest=94 starts to knock on Western doors in =
order to
consume locally, now in the role of tourists to be served,

=20

- their own heritage in the western world, and/or

- =93the West=94 in the variety of its local heritages.=20

=20

With which consequences, re-establishing or thwarting existing power
relations between cultures, will heritage(s) in these touristic settings =
be
(re-)negotiated and (re-)experienced?=20

=20

Particularly welcome are empirically oriented papers that examine the
interaction of specific groups in tourist settings, such as travelers =
(from
the global =93South=94/=93East=94), those visited (in the =93West=94) =
and those active
in the service sector. Also very welcome are theoretically informed =
papers
that criticize central concepts of heritage (tourism) studies =96 such =
as the
tourist gaze, authenticity, experiential vs. educational tourism =96 for
reproducing the West-rest-paradigm, or that challenge the West/rest
dichotomy still noticeable in much heritage re=ADsearch.=20

=20

In a nutshell, this session aims to bring together papers that take =
diverse
=93the rest and the West=94-scenarios in the field of heritage tourism =
as a
point of departure in order to=20

=20

a) critically reflect the =93West-rest-paradigm=94 in the field of =
heritage
research,=20

b) sketch out new categories of scientific thinking and=20

c) set out to work on a new, postcolonial heritage research agenda.

=20

Please send a title and abstract of no more than 250 words to Sybille =
Frank
(Sybille.Frank@...) by 29 January 2012. Thank you very =
much!

=20

If you have any questions, please don=92t hesitate to contact me.=20

Looking forward to your paper proposals,

=20

with best wishes,

Sybille
