Re: [IGUST] Social enterprise in tourism industry

Dear Yongseok

Not exactly the social enterprise, but various community owned and community based tourism enterprises have been practicing within the broad framework of community based rural tourism in Nepal. The basic presumption of these practices is that the local communities are involved in the tourism planning process from the very beginning, realize the
ownership over the tourism products, get benefits and be responsible for the sustainable use of tourism resources.

For our research purpose, following projects/practices could be of helpful as references:
1.    Tourism for Rural Poverty Alleviation Programme (TRPAP): A joint programme of Government of Nepal/Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation/ UNDP Nepal, DFID and SNV Nepal implemented from 2001 to 2007. More detail can be seen in Nepal's Experience Implementing Sustainable Tourism development Models and can be easily downloaded in Nepal Experience….……………………………)
2.    Micro Enterprise Development  Programme (MEDEP): A Joint programme of Government of Nepal/ Ministry of Industry and UNDP Nepal implementing since 1996. MEDEP has included tourism based enterprises as an important sub sector in its third phase period (since April 2008). More details can be taken from www.medep.org.np, info@...)
3.    Eco Himal had run an Eco-lodge trekking project in
Rolwaling areas of Nepal. The cooperative concept that the project supported to run the eco lodge could also be the interesting research on social enterprise in tourism. More details can be found in http://www.ecohimal.org, Email: office.ktm@...

I am also involving in tourism value chain upgrading in two new tourism products i.e. Numbur Cheese Circuit (NCC) and Indigenous Peoples Trail (IP Trail) in the Ramechhap district in the laps of Rolwaling and Everest region of Nepal. The programme is run by Local Economic development (LED) forum Ramechhap and supported by
ILO/Employment Creation and Peace Building through Local economic development (ILO/EmPLED). The prime objective of the programme is to create responsive jobs and employment through tourism. For these programme is also working on other feeder value chain upgrading works which are closely associated with the tourism value chains. Detail information about the new tourism products can be seen in www.numburcheesecircuit.org.np and www.IPtrail.org.np  (to be launched very soon)

I hope you can find some best practices in Nepal about social enterprise/community based tourism
enterprises with these links.

Best of lock for your research work.

Dear Colleagues,
Greetings from Korea. (and APOLOGIES FOR CROSS-POSTING) My name is Yongseok Shin, a chief researcher at
Korea Culture Tourism Institute(KCTI) which is an affiliated research institute
with the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism in South Korea
I am beginning a new research project on the social enterprise in tourism
industry. As some of you may be aware, social enterprise has been introduced
as a means for social service and job generation in goverment policy field.
As such, MCST has been interested government's role in nuturing
this relatively new field in Korea, specially in tourism industry.
As a starting point, I am searching related materials such as policy
report and papers about this topic, but it has not been very successful
I wonder whether colleagues out there around the globe are aware of any examples, case-studies, reports etc. on social enterprise in tourism industry.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks, in advance, for any assitance you may be able to offer.
Sincerely,
 Yongseok Shin

Dr. Yongseok Shin
