Hi Everyone,
Many of you probably received a recent message from Tracfone with 100
bonus minutes if you but a 1-Year Tracfone card by June 30, 2003.
That's not an bad deal overall.
When I bought my Tracfone last year I bought the 1-Year card. It was
a good deal for me. I was due for a new 1-Year card 08/20/03. I
bought a new 1-Year card today and redeemed the minutes early this
morning. My new expiration date is 08/20/04.
For the occasional cell phone user like me this plan works best.
Here's how I cut my cell phone bills. I have a numeric pager too. It
costs $60.00 per year. The pager was free when I paid a year in
advance. The pager plan expires next month. I plan on renewing my
prepaid digital pager.
When I'm not home they call my digital pager. More often than not I
recognize the calling number on the pager display. At this point I
decide when I want to call the party back. If it's important, I call
them back as soon as possible. If it's not important, I wait till I
get home.
When I do call them back on my Tracfone I'm brief, to the point, and
find out the reason they paged me. Some people have a strange
definition of "important".
It's a very inexpensive way of saving my Tracfone minutes. I find
this works quite well for me. I don't live on my cell phone.
Bob in Vegas
Can someone tell me if I'm guessing right in thinking that I can use
a 5165 anyplace I could a 5125, but not the other way around? Is
their any advantage to the 5165 over the 5125 other than triple mode?
I recently stepped up from a 252 to the 5125 but would be interested
in moving up to the 5165 if their is any advantage to its triple mode.
Hi there, I was thinking of getting tracfone for prepaid cell, no AT&T
around here, and I don't want to have to try to find an office of a
provider to get a phone reloaded, as you would with cellcom or us cellular
For activation, would one have to go through a bunch of menus and such, or
is it basically just entering numbers and hitting send? I heard on a news
group once or on one of those info sites in bridog.net that hitting #esn
will make a phone speak it's serial number, is that even accurate, as even
with sprint none of the codes on that site work, not that one, and not *228
to play with the programming by voice prompt. I'd like to know because I'm
visually impaired, and, and menus can be difficult if I don't know how many
times to hit the arrow to go through it. If it's just codes and hitting
send or something of that nature, where the number of times to press each
button are known, it'd be fairly easy, as long as I made sure everything
was right, as if there's no specific sound made to confirm it was done
correctly. Then, once it is active, and I save the serial number in a
place I can get to it for reloading, would reloading involve a bunch of
menus and the like, or is it just a * or # code with the pin in it and hit
send. I plan to buy virtual pins online with my credit card, or paypal,
likely from prepaidonline.com, unless there's cheaper virtual pins around.
I'm going to cancel sprintpcs soon, they don't offer prepaid I don't think,
and I want to cut costs since I can't use all those minutes at night, and I
have flat-rate long distance for my home line, so I can call where I want
for a set price per month, but I need a phone for emergencies and the like
(more than just 911). I'll probably buy this online, if it's a viable
solution, otherwise find a provider otherwise that sells online, that may
ship something already active ready to put minutes on.
Hi Everyone,
Tracfone has brought back two of old promotions. You need to go to
the other Tracfone users group for my message.
No point in being redundant.
Later,
Bob
I have been using tracfones since 1999. The first modle I used was a
Nokia 918. It came with 10 units. At that time Home Units were 1.0
Units, long distance was 1.5 units and roaming was 3.0 units (Goes to
show the price of wireless has droped since then)! The Nokia-Tracfone
918 is rather large, holds a standby charge for about 1.5 days, but
has fairly good reception. When the Nokia 252 was introduced in 2000,
in search of a smaller more lightweight tracfone, I switched to it.
(When I switched I was able to keep my units but they wouldnt swich
over my phone number). My 252 came with a whoping 20 minutes of
airtime (10 Regular 10 for regestering my email). It was what at the
time I would consider lightweight and long lasting. It came with 6
ring tones instead of 5. The battery lasted about 3 days standby
(When it was new) although over a 6 months period of time I noticed
the battery had become very worn and lasted about a half of a day. In
march of 2001 I purchased a Nokia 282. I absolutly loved it.It was my
favorite up untill this point. It had 12 ring tones plus a vibrator,
came with 20 minutes, 1.5 day battery life, and had a clamshell/flip
style design. (Another Clamshell/flip phone I never did own was the
Motorola Startac 3000 which never really made it as a tracfone
because of its $199.99 price tag )
In August of 2001 a revolutionary thing (To Tracfone) happend.
Tracfone introduced the Nokia 5165 Tracfone digital. At the time I
lived in a CDMA area and could not purchase the 5165 because it is
TDMA. When the 5180 (CDMA) was introduced in October I bought one for
$99.99. It came with a whole bunch of coupons for all sorts of free
airtime. The greatest thing was the Caller ID, Call Waiting, And
Voicemail included at no extra charge! The Nokia 5180 has great
standby time (About 5 Days) and 40 ring tones. The most recent phone
to be introduced from tracfone is the Nokia 5125 (I belive it was
introduced in December of 2001). It is a single band TDMA phone very
similar to the Dual Band 5165 phone. I dont know why tracfone
introduced two TDMA phones that are practicly the same.
Over A year has passed since Tracfone introduced the Digital Nokia
5100 series. Most other providers do not even offer 5100 series
phones anymore. I recently emailed tracfone about the topic of New
Phones. The represenative that emailed be back said that they are not
going to be introducing any new phones soon, but if they do, it would
mostlikely be the Motorola V2200 Series. In my email I even
suggessted that they could introduce the Nokia 6360 (TDMA and the
Nokia 6385 (CDMA), but who knows how far that made it.
Overview:
Nokia 918
Nokia 252
Nokia 282
Motorola Startac 3000
Nokia 5165
Nokia 5180
Nokia 5125
I am now done blabing on about my phone history.
Like others, I would like to thank Bob for creating this new group.
I would acualy like to correct some information on previous posts
about the microphone. The Microphone is actually at the bottom of the
phone. If you look at the botom, in between the power plug in, and
the accessory hookup, there is a small hole, that looks like a line.
This is where the microphone is just beyond that hole. As for the
three line/holes near the top of the phone, that is for the ringer. I
was once confused on the matter, untill I did my own reserch and
found these results.

Thank you. I got the phone. So I have a cell phone again. It's smaller
and lot nicer than my old Cingular phone but no calculator on the
phone which is okay. I don't like the color of the faceplate so I
think I'll eventually spray paint the faceplate. I have some
automobile spray paint in the garage that I could use. This phone is
so ridiculously cheap that I don't want to buy anything else for it like
a new faceplate so I think the spray paint in the garage will do. Well
I'll have to find a cheap belt case for it. It'll probably will be
after the 30 day return period is over with when I give the faceplate
the paint job. It looks like all I would have to do is take off the
faceplate (easy enough to do) and then pry off the display screen off
the faceplate and take off the buttons and then spray away at the
faceplate. So I have a nice cheap phone with a bunch of minutes on it.
I'll have to check out the airtime cards with the any bonus minutes
when I have to refill the minutes on the phone. Thank you again.
This reply is too late to do you much good, but Tracfone do have
frequent promotions. Some of them are really good, some are just
so-so. The good ones are: get a free phone with a 30-minute card
(ended 9/30/02), get 100 minutes free when redeeming a 1-year card
(ended 7/31/02), get a free phone with a 1-year card (still on-going).
With the promotion that ended 9/30/02, you get 30 minutes when you
activate the phone, and another 30 minutes with the enclosed card.

I've been thinking about getting a Tracfone since I'm interested in
getting a cell phone again. I haven't used a cell phone in a long time
since about year and a half ago when I cancelled my old Cingular cell
phone after my two years were up because it got to be too expensive
when I didn't really use it so much. But I'm interested in the
Tracfone since it looks like it is so cheap at least with the current
offers I've seen. I noticed they have the offer on the Tracfone.com
where you buy an airtime card for $17.99 and they give you a cell
phone for free but the offer is good till September 30. I'm thinking
about going for the offer where you get the phone because $17.99 is a
bargain. If I'm reading it correctly, I would get the airtime card for
30 minutes plus another 30 starter minutes and the cell phone and
thats all good for 60 days then I'll have to do the refill by getting
another airtime card. So I have until Monday to decide whether to
really get it.
And I noticed if you get an airtime card by itself, they will also
give you bonus minutes like if you get the airtime card for $17.99
without the phone then they will give you 40 bonus minutes for a total
of 70 minutes. But that offer is good only for today September 28. Do
they run these type of special offers all the time over at
Tracfone.com where they give you the extra bonus minutes because with
the bonus minutes you cut the costs to 25 cents a minute. So if I run
out of the minutes on the phone, if they re-offer those airtime cards
with the bonus minutes, then it looks like a good deal to me whenever
I may need to refill the minutes.
Thanks for the microphone information. My daughter and I thought that
those slots on the side where for the ringer because we thought that
the microphone would be like closer to where your mouth would be. But
that just shows you how little I know and how advanced technology has
become to be able to put the microphone up there. Otherwise the
Tracphone seems to be a no-brainer as to figuring it out. My daughter
is very happy with the phone. Thanks so much.
Hi Again,
By now your probably thinking, this is the 3rd message from Bob in
less than one day! Is this all Bob does all day? Not really. I like
being a pro-active moderator. I like being a hands-on person so here
gos!
Here's my first request of you. What model Tracfone do each of you
use or have used in the past? I'm looking for information to form a
database that will assist me in locating people who have experience
with various models of Tracfone.
My Tracfone is the Nokia 5180i. I am very familiar with this model
phone. I'm not familiar with every single function on my 5180i, but I
will do my best to answer any question you might have about this
model phone.
Thanks for your help!

Hi Pdcorlis,
Thanks for your comments! It's good to see you joined our new
Tracfone group. Including this yahoogroup I moderate 14 yahoogroups.
I enjoy running various groups so this is something I enjoy doing to
keep me busy.
If you do find the web site do add it the "Links" page of this
yahoogroup.
Speaking of "Links", I'd like to encourage all you to add a Tracfone
link if you find one in your travels. Even if you find one that is
not an "official" Tracfone link add it to our links page anyway.
Example: If you find a web site for Tracfone products, add it so we
all can enjoy the site. Let's all benefit from a newly discovered web
site.
I have a few guidelines to ask of each of you as you add a link to
the "Links" page.
(1) Add the link
(2) After you add the link, "Click" on your new link to verify that
you've entered the correct url.
(3) Once in a while go back to this link and check it out.
It's as simple as 1,2,3. I routinely check all the feature of the
yahoogroups I moderate, so once in a while your help go's a long way.
Thanks for your comments!

Hi Everyone,
I'm glad that to see a few familiar names on this new Tracfone
yahoogroup. Eventually, I'd like to see most, if not all of the
members of the other Tracfone yahoogroup join this group as well.
Getting members from one group has always been the biggest problem
with any new group.
With this new yahoogroup I need your help. What would you like to see
on this new group? I'm looking for your suggestions and any input you
might have to make this new group informative as well as helpful to
new Tracfone users.
I'm looking for ideas, suggestions, anything that you think will make
this yahoogroup stand out among Tracfone yahoogroups. I'm not trying
to compete with the other Tracfone yahoogroup, but make it a little
more infomative.
Well group, it's time to put on your thinking caps and let me know
what you'd like to see on our new group.
There is no such thing as a "dumb" idea or suggestion. Even if the
idea is a little "far fetched" or "off the wall" let them fly. Let's
have a bit of fun!
Later,
Bob In Vegas
Hi Poyfood,
That is a good question! To quote my father, "There is not such thing
as a dumb question!"
I'm glad you asked that question. Now here's the answer.
To locate the microphone on your Tracfone do the following.
(1) Remove the faceplace from your Tracfone
(2) As you are looking at the you now open Tracfone look below and to
the right of the "smiley face" speaker located at the top of your
Tracfone.
(3) You'll now see a small opening on the right hand side
approximately 3/8 wide. This is the microphone of your Tracfone.
To be technical, this is "condensor" or a "electeret" type
microphone. It may appear to be a small microphone, but it is very
sensitive.
You can also see the openings on your phone with the faceplate in
place as well. Look on the right hand side of the Tracphone and
you'll see 3 small 1/4 inch slots near the antenna. These little
slots are for the microphone.
I hope this answers your question. Thanks for asking your question.

Well - looks like we have another place to discusss Tracfone - thanks
Robert! Also good to see a few of the "regulars" over here,
including Brenton99.
Looks like I lost the website that had the Li-ion batteries for Nokia
5100 series phones, I think I'd like to pick one up for my Tracfone,
I'm sure someone remembers the site - right? I hope I'm still on
topic:>)
One more thing... with analog tracfone's I had to use "follow-me"
roaming, I'm still confused about the new digital phones - do I still
need to activate that feature if I want my wife to be able to call me
when I'm out of town?
Thanks to All
pdcorlis
I bought a Tracfone about a week ago for my daughter. I have an older
cell phone and can easily tell where the speaker and the microphone
are on my non-Tracfone cell phone. My daughter and I can see where the
speaker is on the Tracfone Nokia phone, but cannot see where is the
microphone even if we take off the faceplate. So we ask, where is the
microphone? Otherwise, the Tracfone is working fine since she can talk
into it and you can hear her on the other phone that she may be
calling to. Not really a super important question, but just curious as
to where the microphone is really located on the Tracfone Nokia
phone.
BTW, thanks for starting this group. It's been a week since I logged
in to Yahoo and it's a little too much to wade through the other
Tracfone discussion group with all the different talk and the, ahem,
very diverse personalities over there. I'll be checking in again in
about a week or so. Thanks.
Hi Brenton,
Your welcome! Starting a new yahoogroup is very easy to do. Just go
to the "Group Home" page and click on "Start a New Group". Then you
follow the prompts and fill in the blanks and you have your own new
yahoogroup.
By the way, I made a slight miscalculation. Including this new group,
I moderate 14 groups. Three of the groups I moderate are for
volunteer organizations here in Las Vegas. As much I'd like to have
more free time I enjoy running these yahoogroups. It gives me a
little bit of satisfaction to help some groups get their yahoogroups
organized.
Now as for this new yahoogroup, if we mention this group enough maybe
