I'm on the opposite end of that one. I prefer working with the Motorola, mostly
because I don't like roaming cases and very few people ever call in on a
Motorola with roaming problems. ;)

For simple use, I think the Nokia is a better phone-- but over all, I still like
the Motorola better. From a consumer point of view, when I was looking to buy my
cell phone, the Motorola had a longer battery life, more options (and memory),
and from the opinion of people I talked to (even store clerks) seem to think the
Motorola to be more durable and last longer without needing replacement/repair.
Everyone I asked about the Nokia seemed to wrinkle their noses at the idea of
even buying one, and stores said even though they sell more Motorolas more
Nokias get returned than Motorolas.

I just got my TracFone and activated it on their site. I'm new to
the TracFone service and wonder if members here are well pleased
with it. I got the phone just for security while traveling.
Sometimes I'm on country roads and I'm wondering how good the
reception is in "out of the way" places. I'm in "Deep South" region
of the USA. Thanks!

My old (klunky) Nokia phone is starting to die. I have to keep
hitting the screen to get it to unscramble. I'm debating whether I
should buy the new Motorola V60i flip phone (or another cheap Nokia).
The reason I'm hesitating is because I switched over to Virgin Mobile
(w/ flip phone) for a while and I often couldn't get a signal indoors
(ie: my office) - calls would go to voice mail at times when I wanted
to receive them. I wound up switching back to the more expensive
Tracfone because of this. I was wondering if this weak signal was
common for flip phones or if it was merely this particular phone or
the carrier (Mobile uses Sprint's PCS system). My Nokia also receives
a signal up in northern Barrie, Ontario; and I would like my new
phone to receive signal there too.

thank you for any advice anyone has.

That's one of the reasons I've stuck with Tracfone. I'm up North
(Buffalo), but I'm able to get a signal WAY out of the service area
(I get a clear signal out in the country north of Barrie, Ontario
(about 1-1/2 hrs north of Toronto)). Since they supposedly don't have
service in Canada, I would say that counts as being extremely out of
the way (nearly 3 hours from the border).

Hi,

I have some questions regarding Tracfone. I purchased 2
reconditioned phones in December 2003 from the Tracfone website.
When I received them I tried to activate them, but found out that
they'd sold me the 5125, and I needed the 5180i. Well, I sent them
back, and when I received the 5180i, I was able to activate them.

Now, here's where my questions come in. According to everything I've
read online and in the booklets I received with the phones, I should
be in a digital area, but my caller ID doesn't work. When I emailed
Tracfone, here's what I was told: "Your caller id is active online.
If the mobile displays Call, it indicates that the unit is not in
Digital Mode for the feature to work properly." So, how do I get my
phone in Digital Mode?

Also my phone starts roaming when I'm still in the 'home' area. I've
checked and re-checked the coverage map, and I've definitely been in
the 'home' area, but the phone is roaming. When I emailed Tracfone,
here's what I was told: "To better assist you, please change the
scan on your tracfone to semi-auto "B"." I did this, and the phone
still roams in the 'home' area. 2 units in my 'home' area is a
little expensive.

I'm still waiting for Tracfone to answer my last emails. I emailed
them on Tuesday, and haven't heard anything back yet.

Any help I could get would be greatly appreciated.

I currently own a Nokia 5165 Tracfone and am considering getting the Motorola
v60? I've been told by the customer service at Tracfone that my units would be
transferable but not my phone number. Is this correct? If they can do analog
to digital number transfers why can't they do digital to digital?

Is anyone out there using a Motorola v60? Any comments on it? How about the
other new Nokia models I've seen on the Tracfone web site?

My mother owns a Motorola v120 and lives in the same zip code as me and her
non-roaming area is much bigger than my Nokias' non-roaming area and we're both
on the Cingular network.

Thanks in advance for any feedback you all can provide.

Guys, I'm going to be leaving this list soon as I switched to an
AT&T wireless plan (my additional phone was only $10 a month and we
share 550 minutes, not bad).

So now I have my Tracfone for sale. I have 120+ minutes left on it
and way over a month before the card has to be renewed. You can take
over the number and keep the minutes or start over new if you like.
Less then a year old. Comes with charger, belt carrying case (you
can also use the phone while keeping it in the case, handy), and
hands free kit. The face plate has always been covered with
protective plastic. Also original box and instructions.
To renew the card when you need to all you have to do is get one from
Walmart, KMart, Lowes, etc and get online or call their toll-free
number.

I hate to get rid of it, it's served me well.

Send me an e-mail for info on how to contact me.

TracFone is offering a year's service and 150 + 100 minutes for
either $94.99 (Nokia 5100) or $99.99 (Motorola 120t). Both phones are
reconditioned. It seems to me that these are both good deals, and
the $5 difference is of no real importance. The features that
TracFone shows for the two phones don't seem important either, but
are there any technical differences between the two phones? Would
one work better when roaming? So, my question is: which phone (Nokia
5100 or Motorola 120t) should I get?
Thanks,

I can't speak to the Motorola. But I have been using the Nokia 5180i
for nearly nine months.

If you are into the latest in cellphone gadgetry, the Nokia 5180i
isn't it. If you are merely looking for a practical cellphone, you'll
probably be satisfied.

The 5180i is smaller than the Nokia analog model I used previously.
But it's not petit. Although it is reconditioned, when it arrived it
appeared "like new." Some owners have complained about battery life,
but I have had no trouble. Others complained of malfunctions
immediately after the phone was removed from its box, but I have had
no problems.

If you are looking for a model that will vibrate instead of ring when
you are called, you may be disappointed. You can get this feature only
by buying another, longer-life battery. (I did not do this.)

Roaming on you phone may depend more on the Carrier in your area than
on the cellphone. My carrier is Verizon. I notice little difference
between the roaming of my Nokia 5180 and the Verizon Audiovox CDM-135,
which I used when I had a contract with Verizon.

Like all cellphones, you may experience dead areas when you are beyond
reach of an active cell. When I drive between San Diego and Julian--a
mountain area--I experience a stretch of road where my cellphone is
out of range. I don't believe that is the fault of the Nokia 5180i.
Phone reception is very good on my property in Julian.

I must confess that I have looked at the newer, sleeker Nokia model
offered recently by TracFone. I decided against buying it because,
unlike the 5180i, it offers only digital mode and not both digital and
analog.

I noticed that my local Walmart store sells both the Nokia 5180i and
the Motorola. You might want to take a look at them to help you decide
which model to buy.

My Nokia came with a 120-volt battery charger and a Nokia User Guide.

At my local Walmart, I bought a charger to use in my automobile and a
leather case with which I can clip the phone on my belt. It cost about
$12. (Battery life is much greater than that of my previous analog
phone. I now seldom use the charger in my automobile.)

As I mentioned, I have been using the Nokia for nine months. My usage
being what it is, the one-year prepaid option of 150 minutes (I also
got the addition 100 minutes in a special offer.) dropped my cost with
TracFone below what it would have been if I had continued my contract
with Verizon.

I plan to buy another one-year 150-minute prepaid card during the
special offer that adds the extra 100 minutes.

This is all a bit confusing. I guess the problem is that the model
of Nokia being offered is simply a "5100 series." They don't specify
which of the many in the 5100 series they'll send. At least with the
Motorola, they specify the v120t which I believe operates in AMPS
800, TDMA 800, and TDMA 1900 modes.

Right.

When I ordered my cellphone, I believe there were three different
possibilities for the 5100 series. As I recall, when I was actually
placing the order, I was given no option.

The cellphone that arrives in the mail is the one you get. It's like a
mail-order bride: you never know for sure. :)

Am a new Tracfone user in Denver. Have gotten a notice while trying to send a
text message that the service is not offered in Denver. WTH? Also, cannot get
any notification of any incoming messaging either by voice or mail. Am really
unsatisfied with the service so far. What ticks me off the most is talking to
the Indian outsourced customer service. Makes my blood boiled to try to
communicate with them. They have a limited use of the English language, are
unresponsive to customer concerns, easily rely on script responses which are not
correct and inaccurate. Keep jobs in America for Americans!

Yes sir'eee, got the mail box set-up. On notification options I
have icon to show when a message arrives. Have left many mail
messages using my land line, and on each Verison say's they were
sent. But never get the message icon on the phone. Called TracFone
CS today. Got disconnected three times while in conversation.
Would hate to work in the call center there as there is so much
noise the CS rep asks me to always speak louder as the background
noise on TFones end is so loud. Very, very unprofessional to say
the least. Have submitted two case numbers about the problem and
when checking on the status they always say resolved. They are
58796323 and 5797739. Go figure, how can an issue be resolved when
nothing is resolved?

Does voice mail have to be setup for text messaging to
work? I opened up a case on text messaging & they
said give them 24-48 hrs. I gave them a week, tried
again, still won't send, but still deducts .5 u . The
phone will receive text messages fine though.

I also agree on the quality of their phones, when I
called once, I thought jeez, sounds like a bad cell
connection.

Think to ask a customer to wait for 24~48 hours, sometimes without
the fone on is a "standard" delay tactic with TFone. It is used to
get you off their back for the time period without anything
happening on their end. Customer service with the major computer
makers at one time did the same thing, but they said "reformat and
reload" to get you off their back. Am not a happy camper with
Tracfone/Verison. I'm going to call Verison manana as they are my
Tfone service provider. Perhaps they can get it straight. Sad, sad
state of affairs with TracFone a real pity to say the least.

I had a strange experience with TracFone today when I activated a
new Motorola v120t phone.
My zip code is in area code 817 so my phone was assigned a number in
area code 682.
AC 682 is in my county (Tarrant County Texas) but does not apply to
the city of Fort Worth where I live.
A Tracfone rep at 1-800-867-7183 told me to try again in 24 hours.
Not a good way to start a "relationship."

March 10, 19:49 CST.
Follow up to my above post.
I re-activated my Motorola 120 today via the 800 number provided by
TracFone. Same results. The rep was helpful and we entered new code
numbers for a neighboring zip code (76108) to mine (76116). Same
results. I got another "682-429-****" cell phone number. The rep
told me that they (I suppose he means TracFone) have exhausted their
supply of area code 817 phone numbers. It seems that 682 is used in
various zip codes in the city of Fort Worth.
The 682 AC will not propose a real hardship in my case. I will miss
my Sprint PCS Sanyo scp4700 phone with its' 817 phone number.
I will not miss the $44.87 per month invoice. I just don't use the
cell phone enough. Average of about 34 minutes per month for the
past 6 months. Expensive calls. Over $1.30 per minute.
Heck, I may even discover I don't need a cell phone at all!
texicans51 in Fort Worth AC 682 not 817. :-)

What is the difference between tha ACP-8U and ACP-9U rapid chargers?
I've seen some sites that say either can be used with the Nokia 1221
and others where it clearly states to use only the ACP-8U with this
phone. I have the ACP-9U and it charged up the battery just fine last
night but don't want to continue to use it if it will damage
something in time.
