Below are the results of the 4/29 survey about subject lines.
THANKS to all those who took the time to respond.
Results essentially break down into (group 1) "Yes, let's have descriptive subject lines" and (group 2) "We don't care".
Down below, I have copied peoples' comments; group 1 ordered by date, and then group 2 ordered by date. Some comments are from the earlier 3/20 survey that was sent to just the announcers, with the same questions.
Moderator's Perceived Obligations
Regarding comments about my time, that is correct -- I don't want to spend a whole lot of more of my life working on this Listserver. But as the moderator, I consider it my OBLIGATION to do my best to:
keep people off this list that send excessive or off-topic messages,
keep subject lines informative as possible.
Therefore:
I continue to encourage announcers to include the city, date and day in the announcement whenever possible, for readers' convenience.
Readers may not always have time to open your announcement and search through the text to find what town it's in, or on what day it takes place.
As one responder summarized it so well, "If the subject line doesn't tell me enough, I don't bother with the message!!"
Examples
There's an EXAMPLE in the "Moderators Notes" that the Listserver appends to the bottom of most of these messages, and also a link to the "Announcers Guidelines" which contains more examples.
Don't forget, if you're familiar with these announcers, you probably have learned to "read between the lines". But think of a visitor or new person to this area, reading these announcements. As an example, browse the subject lines in the Scranton Listserver or the Harrisburg Listserver. Some of them, you have no idea what, when , or where they are talking about from the subject line -- since reading those messages we are the "outsiders", and cannot "read between the lines".
I am of Opinion 1. However, in the immortal words of WC Fields, "I would not be a member of any organization that would value my opinion." Okay, so I paraphrased.

HI James. I understand your thought. I do not think we have any template ideas on the cpsdn group but I like the idea. personally I dont use the subject line too much becuase it does not have the info as you describe. I do like the idea. In fact I use it myself just becuase it is a good idea and has all the info in it. But personally I do not rely on it and when I read a post, if I am interested in it I put it on my calendar and delete the email. My aunt told me once to only touch every piece of paper once. I try to do that with email. so personally I dont rely on an email sitting in my inbox becuase I know it will get deleted at some point and I will not realize it. So I would vote for option one in an effort to make the info exchange better for people who would use it. But for me personally it does not matter as I will not rely on it.

Jim -- you are creating work for yourself. No need for Busy work. You have enough to do.
And you do it well.
I'm not concerned about format on a Subject Line of Email... If folks WANT to open emails.. fine... if NOT, then fine too.
I don't need the extra rules to do what we do. We are all doing just fine!
Leave it that way.
Again, your emails are difficult for the normal reader to read. We are not technical writers like you... please simplify them. They are too involved. I know you mean well, but I don't have time to decipher them.
Just my opinion. I know how hard you work... don't create more for yourself.

APRIL 18th our next SAM Dances 4 Singles, 8p - 12m:
Good evening Central PA Dancers,
I am so please to highlight our immediate success of nearly 100 at our first SAM Dances 4 Singles on March 21. Every 3rd Saturday has been reserved through 2010. At our first dance many of you attended from 34 towns up to 2 hours away including Berwick & beyond. Easy travel 4 lanes for the entire trip from key areas of Lewisburg & Williamsport with less than one hour of travel. Many are car pooling & we will help you coordinate. For more information log onto our website of www.Mtnittanyumc.org which includes Dances 4 Singles fliers, map & directions.
With great pride I can share with you the testimonies of
many that shared praise of our modern Family Life center which is the best they have seen. The Emails & phone calls received have brought tears of joy from deep within as this is a Dream come true! We are blessed to have a full functional kitchen, huge dance floor & endless praise of our music selection which I personally guarantee. For our last dance we had a 11 hour work session for the section of the best music from the 50's to present. More than 800 Volunteer hours has been extended into this outreach. Dances 4 Singles Every 3rd Saturday has been reserved through 2010 & in August we will be having a block party picnic, all are invited with a dance to follow.
With our immediate success & obvious need we are pleased to announce that beginning this Fall we will start a second dance, SAM Dances 4 Couples on the 2nd Friday of every other month, also reserved
through 2010. With the passion of our Dancer's, being ALL of you, these dances can & will rival & replace the famous Berwick dance with Dancer's of 200 or more. Great location, music & everybody is smiling!

Thanks for being a part of the North Central Pennsylvania [Dances] Listserver email network.
This message is sent to all subscribers upon joining, and periodically thereafter to the entire list. If this message hasn't been updated since the last time you read it, feel free to move on to the next post.
If you're new to the group or want a quick refresher on how this email group works, please read on! This message contains essential knowledge for all members and will answer MANY common new-user questions, so please take the time to read it through.
If you have any questions about any of the below information
please telephone me using the contact info at the end of this message.
Setting up some of the operations described below may require you to CONSULT with someone familiar with them; going into all the necessary details is beyond the scope of this document.
( Part of 'Track2 DanceNet', BallroomDances.net, SinglesDances.net, and associated with WilliamsportBallroom.com ).
This file is being automatically sent to you by the Yahoo eGroup Listserver because you have joined -- or else a moderator has added your name to the group.
------------------------------------------
WHAT'S A LISTSERVER??
A Listserver (aka Yahoo eGroup) works similar to a newspaper.
When an announcment is sent,
the Listserver automatically distributes it to all 'subscribers'.
This group sends email announcements for ballroom, swing, and
sometime singles dance events for the North Central Pennsylvania area.
It's an ideal system, because:
it's FREE to both announcers and readers
People can SUBSCRIBE and UNSUBSCRIBE themselves as they wish
Thus NOBODY should be receiving announcements that does not want them.
It automatically creates a 'web archive page' of each announcement, that can be viewed by ANYBODY from any browser from any computer anywhere.
We can give any qualified announcer wanting to send legitimate North Central Pa dance announcements 'Posting Privileges', which allows them to send to our database of names that we have been working to build up these past 8 years.
.
IDENTIFICATION -- The Listserver automatically adds the 'subject tag' [Dances] at the beginning of the subject line, so you will know the message come to you via the Listserver.
== 2. AUTOMATIC MESSAGE SORTING
We recommend you create a separate email mailbox named 'DancesEgroup' or similar. Then use your email program to create a 'Rule' (sometimes called 'filter') that will automatically sort any incoming messages with 'Subject Tag' of ''[Dances]' into the 'DancesEgroup' mailbox.
All email programs have this filtering capability. Setting up this Rule will prevent Inbox clutter from Listserver messages accumulating in your Inbox.
== 3. UNSUBSCRIBING
You can UNSUBSCRIBE from this group any time
you no longer want to receive these announcements.
You simply send a blank email (no subject, no body)
Then just hit the 'Reply' button in response to the confirmation request that Yahoo will send you.
Be sure you send this request using your NEW address, because the Listserver performs the requested action for whatever email address you are using.
This 'subscribe address' will also be in the 'Moderators Notes
at the bottom of every email you receive from the Listserver.
Please try to do this 'resubscribing' process yourself. It's not that difficult.
If you ask a volunteer to do this task for you, then they have to stop what they are doing, and essentially spend time "digitally wiping your rear end" for you.
------------------------------------------
Options (If you belong to more than 1 Yahoo group)
Alternate Method 1: Yahoo ID -- Note that if you belong to multiple Yahoo groups and your email address changes:
You can update the address ONCE in Yahoo, rather than having to unsubscribe and resubscribe to several groups.
To do this, you first need to get a 'Yahoo ID', then 'link' it to your actual email address using your Yahoo 'Profile'. Consult someone familiar with this process for more info.
Alternate Method 2: Gmail Address -- Another method is to get a free Gmail address from Google (Gmail.com), and subscribe it to any Yahoo groups you belong to. Then you can forward the Gmail address to your actual address.
Then if your actual address changes, you just change the forwarding address ONCE in Gmail, and all your Listserver messages are now forwarded to your new address.
Hotmail gets bad reviews, and is NOT recommended.
== 5. ADDITIONAL LISTSERVER INFORMATION
ANNOUNCE ONLY --
This group is set up to be 'announce only',
so only 'approved announcers' can post announcements.
I.e., it is not a discussion group.
MESSAGE ARCHIVES --
The Yahoo Listserver automatically stores an 'archive copy' of every announcement sent in the "Message Archives", which you can browse by going to the 'Listserver Home Page'
OTHER LISTSERVERS -- Additional information for all Listservers for this Central Pa region that you can either join or just browse the announcements (Allentown, Harrisburg, Lancaster, North Central Pa, and Scranton) is on the 'Listservers' web page.
ADDITIONAL DANCE GROUP INFO:
CONTACT INFO -- Contact Information for many dance groups in the Central Pa region is available on the 'Track2.com DanceNet' web pages at BallroomDances.net and SinglesDances.net.
SCHEDULES for upcoming dances and classes are available on the blog site WilliamsportBallroom.com , where several different groups post their events.
== 6. HOW YOU CAN HELP 'GROW' THIS LISTSERVER
Any time you attend a new event you saw on this Listserver,
where you have not been before and are a "new face",
please tell the organizers
"I saw your announcement on the Listserver",
so that they know their announcements are being seen.
Encourage your friends to subscribe themselves.
The larger the membership, the better the chances that
publicity people will be motivated to use the Listserver.
This should be a "win-win". The more you motivate announcers to post events,
the more events you'll have to choose from.

This group sends email announcements for ballroom, swing, and
sometime singles dance events for the Scranton Pennsylvania area.
== 2. AUTOMATIC MESSAGE SORTING
We recommend you create a separate email mailbox named 'ScrantonDanceEgroup' or similar. Then use your email program to create a 'Rule' (sometimes called 'filter') that will automatically sort any incoming messages with 'Subject Tag' of ''[ScrantonDance]' into the 'ScrantonDanceEgroup' mailbox.
All email programs have this filtering capability. Setting up this Rule will prevent Inbox clutter from Listserver messages accumulating in your Inbox.
== 3. UNSUBSCRIBING
== 5. ADDITIONAL LISTSERVER INFORMATION
CONTACT INFO -- Contact Information for many dance groups in the Central Pa region is available on the 'Track2.com DanceNet' web pages at BallroomDances.net and SinglesDances.net.
== 7. CONTACTING THE VOLUNTEER WORKERS
