(I think Aerial font works best, coming through the Listserver or
on the archive web page)

There is a Quicktime video clip that shows "bits & pieces" of the Susquehanna Ballroom Dance Society's 2nd dance, held on 4/6/2007 at the Genetti Hotel in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.

1. MAKING WILLIAMSPORT HISTORY ??

The video includes what I believe is probably a "historic first" for this area -- a showcase demonstration dance of the 3-count Hustle, by instructors John Stugrin & Mimi Troisi, from the   Saint John's School of the Arts
[ http://saintjumc.org/schoolofthearts/new.htm ]

2. DISCLAIMERS

I APOLOGIZE in advance for all errors and omissions in this video.    Please note this is definitely an AMATEUR video.  (You definitely won't confuse it with the professional WVIA Ballroom Dancing program that you see on TV :-) .)

Also, this video is somewhat DARK.  So please adjust your monitor to it's brightest setting.  (Now I understand better why WVIA TV uses all those horrendously bright lights in their studio, when they tape their Ballroom Dancing program).

3. THE QUICKTIME VIDEO

The Quicktime video is in the BallroomDances.net Photo area here
[ http://www.track2.com/video/dancevid/mv037.dance7d06genetti.shtml  ]

You should be able to play this Quicktime video if :
  • You have a broadband connection.
  • You have Apple's Quicktime player installed on your computer
get it here FREE for Windows)

4. THE SHORTER YOUTUBE VERSION

If for whatever unknown reason you have not installed the free Quicktime player on your computer, there is also a shorter version on YouTube  here
[ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wPl2vOOcDhc ]
Note the YouTube version is "cut off" at 10 minutes, due to YouTube's 10 minute limitation, whereas the Quicktime version plays for  about 22 minutes.  Note also, the YouTube format requires more "bandwidth" to play (i.e. I think the Quicktime is a more efficient compression format).

5. HUSTLE BASICS ON YOUTUBE

There is a basic "Introduction to 3-count Hustle" video on YouTube here
[ http://youtube.com/watch?v=m2iJp7UBn6M ].

1. Wed Mar 21, 5:30 to 7:30 pm -- Computer Club
About Windows Vista
Zack Fox of Susquehanna Computer Innovations will discuss Windows Vista

Quoting from George Gedon's excellent article on page D-6 of the Sun 3/4/07 Sun-Gazette:

". . . you are surely aware of the new Windows vista operating system being hyped as the greatest thing since the wheel.

Is it as good as they say?  Can your computer be upgraded?  What will it cost?

Those questions and many more will be answered at a Computer Club session from 5:30 to 7:30 pm March 21 ...

Zack Fox, of Susquehanna Computer Innovations will provide a NONTECHNICAL presentation of both the positives and negatives of the new operating system. "

LOCATION: SeniorNet Learning Center, 4th Floor, JV Brown Library, 19 East Fourth St, Williamsport.
  • Everyone of all ages is welcome to attend this FREE program
  • You do not need to be a library member nor a SeniorNet member to attend
  • Advance registration is NOT required

.
2. Gust./Gedon/Kline, now On YouTube

Note:  You need a HIGH-speed connection (cable, DSL) to view these.

A. Susquehanna SeniorNet Overview Video On Now YouTube

The 5-minute SeniorNet Overview that was done back in December by videotaping Maria Gustafson, George Gedon, and Art Kline, is now also on the YouTube.com Susquehanna SeniorNet page
{ http://youtube.com/watch?v=hTgqEChJO2Q }.

This video has the same Contents as the Quicktime version, but the idea is that a person  can view it on YouTube without having Quicktime installed, as long as they have Cable or DSL or some sort of  high-speed connection.

B.Internet Class Overview Video

The 3-minute Internet class overview that was done by videotaping Rudy Wacek in February, is now viewable as a Quicktime video on the internet, on the Internet Video Page
http://www.track2.com/video/miscvid/mv031.snet.class.internet.shtml ) .

UNSUBSCRIBING:  Note I added a few addresses to this Yahoo group just tonight.  You can UNSUBSCRIBE yourself (using Yahoo link at bottom) if you don't want these "Central Penna Model Railroading" emails.  I only send these out about twice per year anymore.  Telephone me if you don't understand how this works.

SUBJECT: Photos from NMRA Train Show, July 7-9 2006 Philadelphia

There are about 50 photos I took at this show, on a temporary "NMRA Philly" web page at http://www.track2.com/temp/060707.nmra.philly.
Please note these are just RANDOM photos of things that caught my eye.  This is not intended to be complete photographic coverage of the event.

Four of these photos are attached to the bottom of this email.

Photo 1 -- Enlarged NCE DCC cab with bigger buttons, for old people like me with poor eyesight who can't see the small buttons.  The standard Power-Cab part number is 524-25.  For this model that I am using, inquire about part number 524-25-Geezer

Photo 2 -- Delaware & Hudson, Alco PA-PB combination.  D&H historians tell you that the D&H had no Alco PB units, but this photo from the MTH display raises questions about that claim.

Photo 3 -- TCS automatic layout -- This layout was automatically controlled by a new experimental DCC command station.  This layout operated about 8 trains, which all started and stopped and changed tracks automatically.  TCS is just "down the road" from us in Blooming Glen PA (north of Philly).  ( See www.TcsDcc.com ).

Photo 4 -- Lego layouts  -- There was a HUGE Lego railroad display, consisting of about 2 million Lego pieces, a joint effort of multiple Lego clubs from around the country.  I have about 21 photos of the Lego railroad on my web page.  For lots more Lego photos, see the website  http://iltco.org  (where ILTCO = International  Lego Train Club Organization).

Our nearest local Lego group is "PennLug", down in the Harrisburg region.
They have a Yahoo group at    http://groups.yahoo.com/group/pennlug  .

A. Summary

There will be discussion on whether the club should approve the funds to
build a G-scale automatic block system, similar to the one that you have seen operating at some previous displays.

I am sending this email, with the permission of the President, Jeff Johnstonbaugh,
as he intends to put this on the agenda for the 3/28 club meeting in Williamsport.

Photos -- There should be attached 7 images (5 photos, 2 excel sheets) in this email, about 124 Kbits total download.  (My apologies to dial-up people, but I couldn't get these compressed much smaller).

B. Operation

This system allows 3 trains to be operated on 1 track -- instead of just 1 train -- by combining an "automatic block" and an "automatic siding".
  • The "automatic block" only, can used to allow 2-train operation by using the block signal where 1 siding is not used at all.  We routinely use this mode, shutting off the siding, to change trains.
  • The "automatic siding" only, can be used to allow 2-train operation by alternating sidings.
  • This system can also be completely "shut down" (so that it acts just like a piece of normal track), to allow 1 train operation.

C. Construction

The proposed unit has a separate control unit and track unit (described below).
Tentatively the track unit part would be constructed by Henry Halverson, to best fit in with the other track sections he constructed.

The control unit part could be constructed by also Henry, or any members who would be interested in doing it.  I could construct the unit if necessary. However, most members of the club are much more talented then I am at constructing things.

D. Written Plans Available

Plans -- A written set of instructions for both the control unit and track unit can be provided.  Complete plans for this 2-track unit also can be viewed on the internet on the "Ingram Autocontrols" website ( http://www.track2.com/ingram ) . Look for sections D1, D2, and D3 under "2 Track Yard" in the left menu bar which describe the 2-track unit.

( The financial reports can be accessed using the 1st link on the "archive" page. )

Spreadsheet

The first sheet on the web page, an Excel spreadsheet, is also attached to this email.
This spreadsheet was made, by using the totals from the Quicken reports.

Note the top and bottom rows show the Opening Balance and Ending Balance for each year.
The 2nd and 3rd rows show the Total Income and Total Expenditures for each year
Other rows show the totals for each category for each year (example "Total Insurance, Total Room Rent", etc).

The "98-05 Totals" in the rightmost Column give the totals for each category (horizontal row) for ALL eight  years 1998 through 2005. These "totals of the totals" are repeated following:

Total Income, 1/98 through 9/2005

$2147   Dues
------
$2147   Total Income

Total Expense , 1/98 through 9/2005

 $67    1-Operating Expense
$1049   2-Insurance
$90     3-Room Rent
- - - - -  - - - - - - - - - - - - - (last 3 categories are inactive)
$400    4-Newsletter
$213    5-CD Burning
$497    6-Training CDs
------
$2317   Total Expenditures

As you probably know if you were a DAPI member, the last 3 categories (newsletter, cd burning, training CDs) are essentially "finished" projects, since we no longer print and snail mail a newsletter, got rid of the CD burner, and are not doing anything with the now-out-of-date training CDs and associated portable hard drive.

The current checkbook balance is $379.94, as shown in the "Ending Balance" of the "2005" column.

Quicken Reports On The DAPI Web Page

The Quicken Summary sheet on the web page, totals these income/expenses in Quicken (from which the spreadsheet was made).

The 7-page Quicken Category Detail Report that is on the web page, breaks each of  the above 7 totals down into the individual transactions.

The checkbook registers for these seven years are also on the web page.

Side Discussion:  Quicken Discussions on cpamu & MacIntouch

I have been using Quicken 2000 in Classic mode to do this bookkeeping.  I was thinking of upgrading to a new OS X version, until I saw the below discussion on cpamu, and went and read the Macintouch pages that are referenced.  That was very interesting.  There seems to be a whole bunch of Mac users NOT very happy with later releases of Quicken.

how does it work for you? Thanks Tim...

DATE:   Sun Sept 18, noon to 4 pm

WHAT:  Operating session on the 2 ft narrow gauge Bucksgahuda and Western Railroad.
COST:  None.  Donations requested to defray operating expenses.

LOCATION:  St Mary's
DISTANCE:    about 100 mi west of Williamsport -- figure about 2 hours+ driving time

FOOD:   There is no food at the railroad property, but if you go about a mile past the railroad, you reach the town of St Marys, with the usual MacDonalds, Wendys, etc.

(graphic should follow here)

DETAILS:

This private railroad is open to "invited guests" on it's 2 annual operating days, once in August, and once in September.  I got permission from one of the owners, Bill Bauer, to announce this event on this email list.

You can ride on the train pulled by an 0-4-0 live steam engine ("Otto") which runs on a big loop with a 7% downgrade and a 5% upgrade.  There are no air brakes, so it requires a brakeman to ride on each of the 3 cars.  They also run an alternate point-to-point route.

There was also a SHAY in operation when I was there in August, although it was giving them some problems that day, might hopefully be fixed by September.

You can get complete details on the   Bucksgahuda and Western website .
( http://home.alltel.net/bandw )  Note they have a DIRECTIONS page with an explicit map showing you how to get there.

VIDEO:   There's a video on the B&W home page, link in the lower left corner, "Otto - Septmember 2003" that shows the 0-4-0 coming up the 5% upgrade.
2nd VIDEO:  If you have a broadband connection, there is a  18 MB MPEG in the Track2 mpegs directory ( http://track2.com/mpegs/rail )  titled "otto+shay.mpg" that shows you both the 0-4-0 and the Shay in operation (if you look close, you can see Tom Martino working as brakeman in the gondola in front of the caboose, and Tony Ferraro and Frank Ulman riding on the Shay).

This Friday, May 20th, (and also Fri June 3rd
The New York Times Band      will be playing at
Night Caps in Edwardsville from 10 pm to 2 am.
(You might consider stopping in after your usual Friday ballroom dance group.)

I danced to this band at a benefit in Berwick back in early May.
This band normally plays at private functions,
but "us public" can dance to them on these upcoming 2 dates.

I found them to be  a really great band to dance to --
for west coast swing, cha cha, and other ballroom dances.
Their music makes you want to move, and it's all the right tempo.

I have never been to Night Caps, but my contact with the band, Jody Busch, assures me that:

  • a) the dance floor is adequately sized
  • b) the place will be populated with an adults, not kids  (most NEPA nightclubs seem to be full of kids)
  • c) they will play the same great music they did in Berwick when I first heard them.

Location

Night Caps Inc
West Side Mall
Edwardsville, PA 18704
714-9991

(I can't find Night Caps in the online Verizon Yellow Pages, but I found the above address listing in the reverse phone directory at  http://reversephonedirectory.com --  by entering Night Caps number   714-9991.)

This location is about 1.4 miles south of Route 309 (Cross Valley Expressway)
on the north side (right side if travelling south) of Route 11 (Wyoming Avenue)

It's in the West Side Mall --
more or less behind the Price Chopper and the Block Buster --
and across the street from the Narrows Shopping Center which on the south side of  Rt 11.

There should be a MAP attached to this email.  Night Cap's manager Vince told me to just look for the Price Chopper, as he says it's the only one in the area.

Previous Names -- I am told that Night Caps used to be Jitterbugs until about a year  or so ago,
and before that it was the Colonels  Garter.

Band Contact

The band contact is Jody Busch at (570) 825-9985.
