Trying to load in a GPX file using File / Import / GPX Tracks and it doesn't
seem to work. I created the GPX track file using Mapsource. When I try to load
it into Photomaps I get the error "Track.csv already exists". (The file I was
attempting to load is testtrack.gpx). If I delete the track.csv file the GPX
still won't load correctly. I think the GPX track load has an issue. I'm
running version 2.77 of USA PhotoMaps and version 6.15.6 of Mapsource. Any
ideas?

Send me that BPX file, and I'll see what's going on.

First, I think USAphotomaps is a great program and I use it a lot for topo maps.
I use the "big JPEG" feature to take a snap shot of a large portion which I then
place on my GPS. However, I've found that Terraserver also has 2 meter/pixel
resolution available and wanted to know if USAphotomaps could be made to grab
the higher resolution topos as well. Any chance for this in a future release?
Thanks!

I am new to this group and have a few questions. Is there a good user maual
available for USAPM? I am having trouble getting my Garmin 76 CSx to work with
it. It will upload tracks and waypoints from the GPS and display them just fine
but I cannot get it to show the GPS position on the map. Is there anything to
set on the GPS for the position to show on the map? I know I must be doing
something wrong, I just do not know what. I read that others have the 76 CSx
working with USAPM and my 76 CSX works with every other program I have tried.
So I need your HELP!!!

I somehow got the program to display a grid of latitude
and longitude. (No text of what they were though.)They
seemed to align on the lines for the 1:24000 topo maps. I believe
the lines were in orange. Problem is now I don't know how
I got them to show. I could not find this in the
documentation. Does anyone know how to do this? (and
once they are showing how to turn them off.)(I may be
missing something obvious in the help file but searched
there and here -- my apologies if answer is obvious.)

Sorry about that. I keep forgetting to support the Lowrance GPSs because there
are only a couple of you out there. But I'll begin on it this week, and let you
know when it's supported.

I think that what you are after is "File", "Elevation Data", "Get
Elevation Data".

That toggles ON an orange grid of latitude and longitude boxes that was
once used to select an area of the data to retrieve. You can then go
back and toggle it off.

I believe Doug had to remove most of the functionality associated with
the "Get Elevation Data" feature when the site serving the contour /
elevation data complained about the volume of traffic being downloaded
by people running USAPhotomaps. The procedure and source of the data as
outlined in the Help file have changed, but the grid is still handy at
times, particularly in photo mode.

GPSBabel will convert Lowrance .usr files (that are on your MMC card) to .gpx
files. USAPhotoMaps can read waypoints in .gpx files, and it can import tracks
in .gpx files.

I'd write some routines for conversion to and from .usr formats if there were
more than 10 Lowrance GPS users (which I doubt).

FYI, I installed the latest version and when you do a check for newer
date/version it still says there is a newer date available. When I do a "about"
the newest version shows the 10th instead of the 11th so that must be what is
going on.

I've used USA Photomaps for several years, and have always been impressed with
it's functionality.

I've recently started a project in Adak, Alaska, in the Aleutian islands. When
I try to go to the address "Adak, AK", I get the error message:

N 51.902598
W -176.621558

is outside the USA.

Although this area is remote, it's within the USA. There are USGS quads
availble for this area. Is there anyway to get access to this area?

Thanks,

Adak, AK isn't on TerraServer. So it can't be in USAPhotoMaps. I hope you're
getting good money for going to Adak.

Thanks for looking Doug - I've seen some references to the Adak quad sheet, but maybe it not in general circulation.  I remember going to the Smithsonian when I was a kid, and seeing quad maps of the moon!

Thanks again for a great product!

Just wanted to post that I've had some success with USAPM in Linux under the
WINE emulator. I have a mighty fine laptop from work that unfortunately had the
anti-theft garbage/chips in it. I tried dropping
the work drive out of it, put a clean hard drive in and it simply won't load
Windows. When I dropped a Slackware 12.2 CD in, the thing just let it
load Slackware plain as day and everything on the Fujitsu laptop works.
USAPM accesses the online maps just fine and dandy. To access the USB GPS
receiver/antenna and the TNC from the Kenwood D7A(G) one simply
make a link in the /.wine/dosdevices linking the USB port where the devices are
fround. In my case /dev/ttyUSB0 is the GPS and /dev/ttyUSB1 is
the radio. I link them to the com ports in USPM where I want to use the
devices. Works really well so far but I haven't explored everything yet.
I can post further details if anyone is interested. I'm not at that
particular laptop now otherwise I'd simply post it.

I have a TNC-X and I believe that will work too when I get a chance to play
with it. Worked O.K. under XP.

A cheap gps.

But it will only tell you the latitude and longitude of where it is, so you need
to know latitude and longitude of the boundaries of your land before you bother
any further. A parcel and lot number isn't enough info. They probably expect you
to hire a surveyor.

A GPS receiver will only be useful to you if you have a latitude and longitude.
You are unlikely to find this in any of the land records. However, most states
and/or counties provide land ownership records online. If you can find these
records, they will give you an address or at least a street name. Then you can
use USAPhotomaps or Google Maps to find the property on a map. Once you have
that, you can get directions from Google Maps or the GPS coordinates from
USAPhotomaps.

Do some searching for their online property records. Or call the courthouse in
that county and ask them where to find them online. These records used to be on
paper in large books in the courthouses. That is why the often refer to "Folio"
(the book number) and "Page" or similar. There are other terms for finding the
property on the map page, like "Grid" or other.

The land use office is not the right outfit to help you.

A recreational grade GPS mapping is not a substitute for a professional
survey. On a large parcel, a good GPS mapping may help you find existing
markers such as iron pins or concrete monuments that have been set by
previous surveys, but if you are trying to establish legal boundaries
for the bank or whomever, or are having encroachment issues with
neighbors, you will need a professional survey.

I have used the software programs Manifold GIS and USAPhotomaps to
create pretty good field maps and waypoints for my Garmin Etrex Legend
GPS. The GPS then guided me to within 10 - 15 feet of marks that had
been set many, many years ago in the heavy spruce undergrowth of coastal
Maine.

For Pinon Hills and San Bernardino County, this link and put in your
parcel number.

http://nppublic.co.san-bernardino.ca.us/newpims/(S(lmh0q2b2xnnytnulm1fkb2fa))/Pi\
msInterface.aspx

If that fails, navigate to the property records link on the following page:

Hello All,

I Agree completely with Doug's answer as being a surveyor in the past,
GPS does not give enough accuracy for land surveying. Like Jim said you can get the coordinates of the lot....

Well you would a surveyer or a friend with a theodolite would get the job done for a cost.

Take Care,
Moe

I really like the ability to add pictures to waypoints. Lets me confirm my
memory.

One thing that's somewhat bothersome is the fact if I inadvertently hover over a
waypoint, the list opens and will not close unless I open one or more of the
pictures. Can't just click "Close" and have it go away.

Not a big deal - I like the picture attachment feature a lot.
