Mr. Evans,
The sale of the Jesse Fifer Collection marks a sad day for
Virginia archaeology, and the fact that you are selling these
objects marks a very sad day for your business. I have
attended auctions at Green Valley in the past and realize
that you have a policy of selling Native American artifacts;
indeed, I have contacted your business about this to register
the opposition of the Virginia professional community.
Because of your continued participation in the antiquities
trade, I will no longer patronize your business, including
the Book Fair (which I have attended since 1982), and I am
encouraging others to join me in this boycott.
Members of Virginia's avocational and professional
archaeological community have been monitoring the Fifer sale,
not because any of us has a 'claim' to the objects, but
because we are completely opposed to the commercialization
and sale of the Native heritage of our country. While you
may be within the limits of the law to conduct this sale,
your business is encouraging site looting and the black
market sales of antiquities. Every time the public sees a
Clovis point or a reconstructed pot sell for hundreds of
dollars, site looters are encouraged to accelerate their
activities.
Archaeological sites such as the ones Mr. Fifer "dug" are non-
renewable, priceless resources. That you and he would profit
from the sale of this collection is distressing, at the very
least.
I hope that you will reconsider your policy of engaging in
the sale of such items in the future, and I will gladly
visit with you to discuss this very important issue.
