well, this is kind of cool...

i am not sure if this is a good idea or not, so, if
you have a site, i will leave it up to you...

i have whipped up a little script so you can add a d
cbg search box... it is the one we have been workin
g on, that searches the group bookmarks, our partner
sites, and even plenty of other people's sites, mak
ing a custom search engine for those who use dreamca
st browsers... limited to 500 pages and i am being
very careful and thorough to make it as much meat an
d as little fat as possible...
more info at...
http://DCBG.cjb.net/atomzsearch.html
and
http://DCBG.cjb.net/indexinfo.html

if you are interested, here is the code...

<script src="http://home.earthlink.net/~dcbrowsers/d
cbgsearchbox1.js"></script>

that is a very small snippet...

now, i have never done any of this before, so, i don
't know if i made it right or not... i think i did.
.. it seems to work ok...
if you trust me, feel free to use it... i don't thi
nk it has any functional problems, so far as i could
  tell...
and, yes, i have made it javascript so that i can up
date it if i need to...

if it works out ok, i may make different versions, e
specially since this first one is pretty big... i i
ntend to make a smaller one... and even a text-only
, like maybe using a pop-up...

but, i need to sort out all that stuff and decide ho
w to proceed and whether or not i even know how to g
o about it all... i kinda' guessed my way through t
his one and was shocked when it worked...

anyway, that should continue to function just fine,
even if i never touch it again...
just to be clear, i am keeping that one pretty much
as is... it will not suddenly get bigger or smaller
or anything... so, if you pick a nice spot to it o
n your page, it will not suddenly morph shape out of
  the blue...
any major changes, i will just make a new one... and
i will probably put all these in a subdir of their
own and add the link to the search page...

but, i am learning this as i go here, so, we will se
e...

it seems you did not read my email fully... this is

at this point, i would like to know if i need to spe

needs of the customers would be? i really expected b

so, perhaps you should also send along the informati

we are paying more than we paid the seganet isp to b

needless to say i am very pissed...
again, the issue to me is that THEY should have look

have to stand still for dreamcast users, but, when
you take over that many accounts, you would think th

we have had nothing but excellent service from earth

i intend to complain and complain loudly...

-------------------------

I wanted to know about the new web mail interfac
e.

As you may or may not be aware, many users of th
e SEGA Dreamcast entertainment console/Internet devi
ce are customers of Earthlink. There was, in the pa
st, a specialized ISP for Dreamcast users, and a yea
r ago, that ISP went out of business and transferred
all our accounts to Earthlink, assuring us all our
needs would be met.
Many of us gladly and comfortably chose to use E
arthlink as our new ISP, based on reputation, and ha
ve always been very satisfied with the service, but,
now it seems we have reason to be concerned.

     When logging in to http://webmail.earthlink.net
we are given a message warning us that "the beta ver
sion will replace the existing Earthlink Web Mail ne
xt week."
The problem is that the new beta version does no
t work on any browser avilable for Dreamcast, and no
browser upgrades are available for us. Considering
we have used the Earthlink Web Mail for a year, we
have a great amount of email in those accounts and n
ow we fear we will lose all those saved emails, and
no longer have the reliable email service we have co
me to count on.

It says elsewhere on the page that "you can swit
ch back to the current product at any time, with no
loss of email", but, what concerns us is the word "r
eplace" used in the first message.

So, I would like to know which is the case. Wil
l we be able to continue to use the current Web Mail
interface or will we lose access to our email?

This is a very troubling matter and there is no
official email address given on the page to voice ou
r concerns directly to those in charge of the new We
b Mail beta.
Also, no actual date is given as to when the cha
nge will take place, so, we do not know if we have o
ne day or several, so, we also feel some urgency to
find out the full details of this matter.

Not only am I personally a happy customer of Ear
thlink, with two accounts for two machines, but, I a
lso run a user group for those who depend on Dreamca
st browsers and Earthlink for all Internet needs, so
, I would like to know what to tell the people in my
group and the Dreamcast community in general that t
urns to the group for this sort of information.
Earthlink is still the SEGA-recommended ISP for
Dreamcast users and a sign-up process is even built
into the browsers released for the Dreamcast by Plan
etweb, so, I feel this is a serious issue, not only
to your Dreamcast-using customers of the past year,
but also for all the potential Dreamcast-using custo
mers in the future, since the built-in sign-up proce
ss in the Planetweb Dreamcast browsers is the only c
hoice given, aside from the option of using one's ow
n ISP, which many do not fully understand, as many w
ho use the Dreamcast browsers are new to the Interne
t and are therefore unfamiliar with such concepts.

So, i would greatly appreciate your timely atten
tion to this inquiry, even if that attention is to f
orward my concerns to the appropriate department sin
ce, as I mentioned, no email address is given to ask
questions about the Web Mail beta.

I apologize for the lengthiness of this email, b
ut, as I tried to make clear, we fear this may requi
re our immediate attention, and I wanted to be sure
I was thoroughly clear about the situation.

I look forward to your reply,

for one, i separated the script sections more clearl

or, if you don't mind the cjb frame...
http://DCBG.cjb.net/bookmarklets
or, for that matter...

i may re-point the dcbookmarkletlab cjb address to t
hat page...
i also need to add a link to it from the main dcbg a

i did not re-arrange anything (some scripts are in t

ff that just makes it that much harder to use the si

just kind of threw this one together...

also, i have no idea if i will bother to try to keep
it up-to-date... but, even if not, it makes the sc

some day, an actual site may be made, more user-frie

use...
but today is not that day...

so, this is as good as it gets for now...

hopefully, this will be a bit better...

if it goes well, i will re-point the cjb address, as

What is with the "alphabet soup" spammer. He has bee
n known to hit my
group 4 times in a single day.
Is this some type of computer program that joins gro
ups under
randomly generated names? Or is this just some insan
e person? I
always remove his fake member ID's within hours, and
  his spam
messages never make it past moderation. But he still
  joins my group
under as many as 4 aliases a day...
Just wondering if my nemesis is a real person or a p
rogram.
Also, I have been getting virus bearing emails addre
ssed to the owner
of my group...Yahoo always removes the virus for me.
  Not sure if this
is from him or some other enemy I've made.

Vent all you want about the Alphabet Soup Spammer.
We've been complaining
about him since we first noticed him in August. We'
ve tried turning him in
to both Yahoo! and the FCC to no avail. They don't
seem to grasp the notion
of the harm he can do.

Unchecked, the Alphabet Soup Spammer writes a messag
e to group which
typically leads to a falsified free web hosting addr
ess. At the address,
you will actually see the information about the host
  he is spoofing in the
background. However, in the foreground, you are fed
  as many pop-ups as your
system can take before crashing. These will include
  cookies and fonts and
potentially other material such as computer virus an
d tracking/hacking
programs or information.

He typically creates several hundred IDs and Yahoo!
mailboxes at a time.
The name he uses in your group will be unique to you
r group for a one time
use only. Once he has posted, the ID and the mailbo
x are abandoned. What
we are talking about is perhaps 1000 or more IDs and
  mailboxes per day
sometimes three or four times a day several times in
  any given week. Since
this activity reserves a specified amount of room fo
r a period of no less
than 90 days, it surely must have some impact on Yah
oo! services, but they
aren't owning up to it. We suspect that he accompli
shes all this with a bot
which gets around the optical keyword verification b
y having established a
subroutine on the rotation and guessing until it suc
ceeds (it's either that
or human intervention or ...and here is one we don't
  like...he has Yahoo!'s
blessing).

The only recommendation we can make to prevent his a
ctivity is specific to
your group only. Place all new members, as we have,
  on moderation. When he
posts, you'll see it first, and actual new members c
an be removed from
moderation once they've posted non-spam. "Check out
  this website..." being
a typical subject line, he isn't hard to identify ev
en when his ID by
coincidence appears to be a normal one. At least it
  allows you to protect
your members from threat.

If you do feel more comfortable removing him on join
, go ahead and do it.
Again, he isn't hard to identify. His ID will alway
s match his mailbox
name. His mailbox will always be--so far anyway-- @
yahoo. His Yahoo!
profile will be totally blank. He always selects the
  mail option Individual
Emails.

Are you certain of that? My entire vet school class

My classmates always warn each other when a message

What other explanation could there be, other than th

I have a copy of the klez virus sitting in my yahoo

i can send you a copy of klez right now from my yaho

last week i got an email saying that yahoo was going

instead of yahoo, it said AOL was going to charge. i
  get emails telling me
that Bill Gates is gonna send me a cheque and to del

i guess what i am saying is based on my experience,
you can get virus's in

Anyone else notice this?

Also has anyone tried tracking down their IP?

Record the IP, log it somewhere and maybe a pattern

I've not noticed the spammer joining any of my lists
, but I have
developed a procmail rule that's 90% effective in id
entifying the posts.
I've noticed the following pattern:

1. All messages delivered to yahoogroups.com (a give
n)
2. Agent is always eGroups-EW
3. Username is always *@... (the 12 char name,
  usually in a
steadily increasing pattern)
4. Originating IP either from 170.224.244.102 or 206
.74.62.*
5. Subject line containing keywords: "check this", (
free) pic(tures)
6. Never a reply (Re:)
7. Message bodies are always short (usually just URL
  plus group footers)
8. One line beginning with "http://" in each message

It's tricky to nail down exactly what will match, as
  I had considerable
problems while subscribed to the Miniatures list, in
  which many posters
put up short messages with a URL in them. However, t
his rule did a
pretty good job of discerning between those and the
spammer's posts.

Now that I'm taking a more active moderation role, I
  plan to use a
modified version of this rule to help automate the p
rocess.

Here's the rule (procmail) for those interested:

--- cut here --- cut here ---

# This is a scoring rule:
# Each message starts at -5, then points are added f
or each matching
# characteristic. Those that result in >/= 0 are pos
sible matches for
# sitespam. Note that no single pattern results in r
ejection, nor must
# all rules match for it to exceed the threshold. Th
e message must
# simply contain the MAJORITY of characteristics to
be flagged.
# 1st check for the usual header pattern in headers.

+ Anatomy of a Search Engine: Inside FAST
by Avi Rappoport, Guest Writer

A special report from the Search Engine Strategies 2
001 Conference, August
12-14, San Jose, CA.

At the Anatomy of a Search Engine panel, Tim Mayer,
vice president web
Search, Fast Search & Transfer, offered a behind the
  scenes glimpse at the
inner workings of FAST, the search engine that power
s Lycos, AlltheWeb.com
and other regional portals.

FAST has a powerful search engine infrastructure:

- 2 data centers (for redundancy)
- 150 racks
- 1100 Dell machines
- running mainly FreeBSD *(and other platforms inclu
ding Windows 2000 and
Sun's Solaris)
- Over 2.1 billion documents

The search engine responds to 40 million queries per
  day.

Crawling

The FAST crawlers follow links to collect data from
the web. They collect
each document, and send them to the indexer which bu
ilds a searchable
index. They also store a copy of the page so they c
an show query matches
in context.

Challenges for crawlers include tracking updates and
  new documents as the
web continues its exponential growth. Link structur
es are constantly
changing, links are added and removed, so index have
  to track both the
pages themselves and the relationships. New content
  types provide new
challenges, to index the metadata and useful context
  for multimedia files,
FTP archives, new file formats, structured (database
) data, dynamic
content, Flash, and 3500 sources for real-time news.

FAST crawls in two ways: batch crawling starts from
scratch, with an empty
"local store", but it never fetches the same page tw
ice in the indexing
cycle. Incremental crawling starts from the existin
g local store, and
tries to discover new documents. It looks at certai
n sites with frequent
changes by tracking average freshness for pages and
revisiting
accordingly, then updates the local store periodical
ly.

The crawler farm is a set of independent machines in
  nodes, coordinated by
a scheduler, which each have their own segment of th
e web to crawl. They
coordinate work and share some link information and
meta information. The
document scheduler provides a prioritized ranking of
  documents to crawl
next, tracks rules in robots.txt and keeps the crawl
ers from sending too
many requests at a time to a server, as they are cap
able of requesting
1,000 documents per second.

Some crawls are focused on finding new documents, ot
hers on freshness,
updating existing documents. Up to 2/3 of new URLs
point to documents
which duplicate already found content, and in a 7 to
  11-day crawl cycle,
about 5% of URLs are dead links.

In addition to web crawling, FAST has a multimedia c
rawler (including
Flash sites), and a real time news crawler. It has
a special crawler farm
dedicated to paid-inclusion pages, which checks for
updates every 24
hours.

Document Indexing

The document processor retrieves the documents thems
elves, handles the
various file formats, checks for document duplicatio
n and parses data.
FAST analyzes the documents in a number of ways, con
verting them to XML,
detecting the main language, checking for adult subj
ect matter,
classifying the content by topic, and calculating a
static quality
ranking. In addition to indexing for search, FAST p
rovides alerting
services, notifying users when new information on de
signated topics
appears.

Searching

When a user searches AllTheWeb or Lycos, FAST perfor
ms some analysis on
the query itself. It checks for language settings a
nd looks for
linguistic cues, to match results to the language of
  the searcher.
Additional phrasing processes recognize multiword te
rms, so it can search
for San Francisco and New York as phrases rather tha
n unrelated words.

+ Anatomy of a Search Engine: Inside Google
by Avi Rappoport, Guest Writer

A special report from the Search Engine Strategies 2
001 Conference, August
12-14, San Jose, CA.

The Anatomy of a Search Engine panel offered insider
  views of two major
crawler-based search engines: Google and FAST. The
first speaker was
Craig Neville-Mannning, a senior engineer at Google.

The mission of Google is: To organize the world's in
formation to make it
universally accessible and useful. (You notice that
this says nothing
about the web, crawling, PageRank or any of the othe
r details -- these
guys think big).

Google today has several components:

- Crawling the web
- Building an index
- Ranking
- Serving search results
- User interface and design
- Google infrastructure

"Crawling" is the process of following links to loca
te pages, and then
reading those pages to make the information on them
searchable (this is
sometimes known as robot spidering, gathering or har
vesting). The Google
crawler, known as GoogleBot, crawls all the URLs it
knows about every few
weeks. It checks that the page is still available,
gets any updated
information, and follows links to pages it hasn't se
en before. Some
sites, such as news sites, get crawled more frequent
ly, so that the Google
index has the most recent data -- they could be inde
xed daily or even
hourly.

The robot crawler reads the pages just like a browse
r. If you wanted to,
you could reproduce the process by opening your brow
ser, starting with any
URL, saving the page, following every link on that p
age, saving those
pages, following every link on those pages, until th
ere are no more links
you have not followed yet.

These robots have to be sensitive to webmasters, so
they limit the number
of times they hit each site per minute. The softwar
e is very fast, so
they can crawl many sites in parallel. The GoogleBo
t, like all the other
major search engine crawlers, obeys the "robots.txt"
  directives, avoiding
pages which the webmaster has designated as off limi
ts (for more
information, see the Robots Exclusion Protocol, at <
http://www.robotstxt.org/>).

Building Google's Index

A search engine index is much like the index listing
s in the back of a
book: for every word, the system must keep a list of
  the pages that word
appears in. It's quite hard to store these efficien
tly. For example, the
word "flamingo" appears in about 492,000 out of abou
t 2 billion pages
known to Google.

For the average size of 1,000 words per page, they h
ave to be very careful
to use techniques such as storing information in RAM
: it would take 8
months to check for that word if everything was on d
isk.

Google knows about 3 billion web documents, includin
g images, PDF and
other file formats, Usenet newsgroups and news.

Relevance Ranking

Once Google has matched a word in the index, it want
s to put the best
document first. It chooses the best document using
a number of
techniques:

- Text analysis: evaluating the documents based on m
atching words, font
size, proximity, and over 100 other factors

- Links & link text: external links are a somewhat i
ndependent guide to
what's on page.

- PageRank: a query-independent measure of the quali
ty of both pages and
sites. This is an equation that tries to indicate h
ow often a truly
random searcher, following links without any thought
, would end up at a
particular page.

Google has a "wall" between the search relevance ran
king and advertising:
no one can pay to be the top listing in the results,
  but the sponsored
link spots are available.

Serving Results

Google has a distributed architecture consisting of
a fleet of web server
that shows the forms and the search results, index s
ervers that store the
searchable listings, and document servers that conta
in the full text of
each page, to extract the "snippets" -- those bits o
f text surrounding the
match words in the search results. The document ser
vers also provide the
cached pages and the HTML versions of Acrobat, Word
and PowerPoint files.

The system design is scalable and highly parallel, d
istributed search, so
each query goes across multiple machines. They choo
se cost-effective,
mid-quality commodity PCs running Linux. Of the 10,
000 machines, several
fail every day, because they run so much more than n
ormal desktops, so
they have designed in search redundancy, assuming so
me of the machines may
fail at any time.

Google's User Interface and Design

The Google approach is to keep the user interface cl
ean and simple. All
changes are put through user studies, analysis, and
testing. They are
concerned both about simplicity and about server sta
bility. The User
Interface design is the responsibility of cross-func
tional teams,
including psychologists, business analysts, and blue
-sky researchers.

Tomorrow: a look inside FAST, the search engine that
  powers Lycos,
AllTheWeb.com and numerous other regional portals.

The idea behind a pso uploader is quite easy. Get the raw snapshot file,
upload it to the server, and the extract the image from the file and create
a jpg from it.

But that is the green grass on the other side of a very very large fence.
Without loren, it's hit or miss when it comes to figuring how the image is
saved to the 195 block (97.5kb) file. Once I, or someone else, is able to
discover just how it is saved, making the image extracter is a 20 minute
job.

Once I am able to get this computer setup to use some of my tools, I will
try to continue to figure out this puzzle. (If you are wondering, I am in
Germany right now and have not completly installed all of my tools.

Hi insidiousplot! :)

Thanks for your extensive answer!

Some japanese guy gave me a Link to his snapshot converter (to BMP).
The language of the comments is in japanese, but the rest is
readable. He said, maybe if I put the uploader-code and his code
together somehow, I would be able to "recreate" the snapshot
transfer...

Unfortunately i'm not good with .cgi coding (i have a little
experience but not in graphics things) and i hope someone here can
help me to put it together the right way.

The link: http://www.ash.or.jp/~take/etc/ss2bmp.lzh

In this archive are 4 files, which seem all to be needed for the
converter. If it is possible for anyone here to put this and the
convert together and then send the file to someone's e-mail-address,
please let me know or show me how I can do this!

Thank you and see you soon,

Joerg

well, as you probably know, the original pso snapsho
t transfer site was created by loren peace of booyak
a.com fame and no one seems to have seen him in ages
... we could have used his help when creating the u
ploader... but, we did manage to come up with some
scraps, though, for the life of me, i could not imag
ine where...

the resident expert around here is kefka over at...
http://kefka.hypermart.net/home.php
and he has done alot to try to make a pso snapshot t
ranfer from his uploader... currently, people are a
lso searcing for a way to view dreameye videos on a
pc... the format, method, etc. seem to be very simi
lar to the pso snapshots... not surprising since th
ey are made by the same people...
in fact, we have long since used the official pso sn
apshot archive run by sonic team/isao ... what lore
n did was just creativity, but, the official uploade
r converts them and puts them in one massive databas
e...

anyway, we think the key to the dreameye vids and th
e pso snapshots are probably very related... proble
m is, no one working on the problems are all in one
place...

kefka may very well know more about both subjects th
an anyone else, so, you could start there...

may have some luck at the dcbg...
http://DreamcastBrowsers.cjb.net
which also has links to dreameye info in the bookmar
ks, which will probably not be much use toyou...
the dcbg is where you will find alot more people...

the pso group has a link on the front page to the of
ficial pso snapshot uploader... (though, again, dou
bt it will be much help to you...)
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/DCBG-PSO
and in the bookmarks MAY be a link to a site where s
omeone has made their own pc-based version... i mig
ht be able to come up with that link, but, don't hol
d your breath...

the dreameye crowd are slowly congrgating...
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/DCBG-DreamEye

i often think the vmu dev crowd might be of help in
all this...
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/vmu-dev

but, i can also say ALOT of people are startingto lo
ok into the pso snapshot thing since the old site we
nt down...
so, it is only a matter of time before people start
getting together on it, and it seems there is alread
y alot of interest, so, it shouldn't be too hard to
get people interested...

Hi @all!

Since the snapshot-transfer on pso.donut.dhs.org is offline i'm searching for
code to get a functional version of a snapshot transfer to my site.

I found the uploader here and wanted to ask if anyone here has more information
or the sourcecode for a complete snapshot-sending utility.

Hope you can help me somehow or give me a link. My search on the internet
brought not much to daylight yet...

Many greetings,

Joerg

P.S.: please excuse if my english is bad. :)

well, bummer, one collection bites the dust...
http://www.geocities.co.jp/MusicStar-Keyboard/1841/e

seems he took his site down...

so, that means the folder only has our collections,
plus i added danny's collection, and i moved the lin

so, please add your links or any you know of...
btw, i would add the links that a couple of you have

links to people that give their ok or those no long

hopefully you have all seen the dreameye info folder

all collections are welcome...
just go add your link or post it so someone else can

easiest ways to get to the folder...

VERY cool new feature...
combines two things i try to point out the most...
that learning to search the web is the most valuable
  thing to learn, period...
and that sites do not have info, people do, so, disc

+ Introducing Search Engine Forums Spotlight

Today SearchDay begins publication of a regular new
feature, spotlighting interesting, newsworthy or con
troversial discussions taking place in the numerous
search engine forums.

Many searchers don't realize it, but there's an acti
ve community of webmasters who thrive on keeping up
with the cutting edge of search engine technology.
These intrepid hawks pore over their SERPs (Search E
ngine Result Pages) scanning for any clues to how se
arch engines rank pages and process queries.

They post their findings to a number of discussion g
roup forums, including WebmasterWorld, IHelpYouServi
ces, SearchEngineForums, and others. And it's rare
that a finding is posted without another member of t
he community replying, offering praise, scorn, or al
ternative interpretations. They're lively groups.

Why should searchers care about webmasters skirmishi
ng over the arcana of search engine operations? Bec
ause these discussions can often offer valuable insi
ghts that may help you become a better searcher. Yo
u may not realize that Google recently made some cha
nges to its results ranking algorithm, for example -
- the company made an effort to downplay the changes
.

But the new changes did have an impact on the way so
me results were calculated. And the discussion grou
ps were buzzing for days, with comments ranging from
helpful tips for modifying content to wild conspira
cy theories accusing Google of selling out or persec
uting particular web sites.

For all but the most dedicated, navigating the searc
h engine forums is a daunting task. It's not always
easy to know which members know their stuff and whi
ch members are naive blowhards spouting patent nonse
nse. Because they are open forums, rumors and inacc
uracies abound.

And yet there are some real gems to be found -- and
these are well worth the attention of both searchers
  and webmasters alike.

That's why we're introducing the new Search Engine F
orums Spotlight feature. Robert Clough, publisher o
f the daily Search Engine Guide Newsletter, will be
scanning the forums for the most interesting, newswo
rthy or controversial discussions taking place each
week. Every Monday, SearchDay will feature links to
these posts, with brief snippets describing the top
ic of each discussion.

So without further ado, here's the first installment
of Search Engine Forums Spotlight. Many thanks to
Robert Clough for providing this valuable service to
  SearchDay readers.

+ Web of Deception: Misinformation on the Internet

A new book offers an eye-opening exposi of the varie
d types of chicanery,
fraud and misinformation that's rife on the Internet
-- and what to do if
you get stung by it.

"There are three kinds of lies: Lies, damned lies, a
nd statistics." (1)

This famous aphorism, often attributed to Mark Twain
, can be said another
way: "Don't always believe everything you read."

This is especially true when you're searching for tr
easure in the world's
largest "information gold mine" -- the world wide we
b. Sure, the web is a
great source of authoritative, high quality informat
ion. But it's also
littered with pages full of inaccuracies, partial tr
uths, and outright
lies. Twain again: "A gold mine is a hole in the gr
ound with a liar on
top." (2)

Want proof of the web's duplicity? Look no farther.
   The links below will
take you to the web pages where I found the quotes f
rom Twain. But
there's a big problem with both quotes.

They aren't Mark Twain's words.

The "damned lies" quote comes from Twain's autobiogr
aphy, but the words
aren't his -- they're Twain quoting former British P
rime Minister Benjamin
Disraeli. And there is no record of the "gold mine"
quotation in Twain's
books or papers. Because Twain was such an adept qu
ipster, he is credited
for many things he didn't say, according to Twain au
thority Jim Zwick (3).

This highlights a key problem with the web. It's ca
relessly used as a
primary source of information, when in fact it's mor
e often a secondary
source. Someone reads an inaccurate statement on th
e web, quotes it on
another web page, search engines obligingly index al
l of the inaccurate
pages, and we end up with a mess where fiction is ac
cepted as reality.

Web of Deception: Misinformation on the Internet is
a new book from Forbes
Inc.'s Director of Knowledge Management, Anne P. Min
tz. Mintz offers a
marvelous expose of the multitudes of chicanery that
  can be found online.
The book is a collection of essays from leading auth
orities who discuss
both the social and technical reasons why inaccurate
  information exists on
the Internet.

The extent of online deception portrayed in the book
  is a real eye-opener.
The first chapter chronicles hoaxes, counterfeit si
tes, and other
spurious sources of information on the Net. Succeed
ing chapters go into
depth on medical, legal and corporate misinformation
, as well as charity
and e-commerce scams.

An excellent chapter by LaJean Humphries provides sp
ecific, detailed
techniques for evaluating the quality of online info
rmation. Chapters by
Susan Feldman and Elizabeth Liddy focus specifically
  on the technical
aspects of search engines, and how they can be "tric
ked" by
misinformation. Two other chapters focus on privacy
  issues, and what to
do if you fall victim to online fraud.

Mintz clearly selected both the authors and subjects
  for the book with
care. In less skilled hands, this book could have b
een nothing more than
hype-ridden tome designed to scare people into buyin
g it. Instead, the
focus of the book never wavers from providing a clea
r-eyed, objective look
at a serious problem. The goal is to inform and enl
ighten, and the book
succeeds admirably.

Web of Deception is a must-read book for any serious
  searcher, not only to
help protect yourself from online charlatans, but al
so for its excellent
chapters on search engine technology. This book tru
ly is a gold mine,
because as Twain (really) said, "Truth is stranger t
han fiction, but it is
because fiction is obliged to stick to possibilities
; Truth isn't."
