I have a few billion problems with this web page. The first
is that all of the "official" quotes talk about 3.6 megawatts
= 3.6 million watts, which the author somehow converts to
3.6 billion watts in his headline and comments.
Second, this is effective radiated power, ERP, so it includes the
antenna gain as well as the actual power. Impressive as an
artificial radio source, but utterly insignificant compared to auroral
energy sources or even a good thunderstorm.
The claim that 'This heating to the point where the molecules are blown
apart causes it to give off a "scream" of extremely low frequency (ELF)
radio waves' is very dramatic but scientifically incorrect. And if you
look at the data, the "scream" is more like a soft whimper. Keep in
mind that HAARP's energy is being delivered at HF. ELF effects are very
small side-effects. Actually, compared to the auroral effects observed
in Alaska, all of HAARP's effects are small.
People who get worked up over HAARP have obviously never spent the night
watching aurora while instrument readings are pegged and HF propagation
is wiped out for hours. In comparison, HAARP is what we would call a
cheechako sideshow. [=Alaskan slang for greenhorn, newbie, ...]
As one who has wandered the swamp where the antennas are located, I
can tell you that there is a life-threatening force there: mosquitoes.
There are easily 3.6 billion of those in the area, but that is
nothing special in Alaska.
I tend to be skeptical of web pages where the author talks about
"lazars" and is the proud creator of a publication called "LIQUID
CONSPIRACY: JFK, LSD, the CIA, Area 51, and UFOs." It might be the
basis for the next Austin Powers movie, but science it isn't. I'm
just glad he hasn't gotten ahold of my design for the death ray I
built from a lava lamp and microwave oven. It is what caused all
the wildfires in the northwest US this summer...but don't tell
anybody.

Today in a greek newspaper, someone writes an article
about the political significance of "the new 250,000 km
oil pipeline". Of course it is a minor 250 km pipeline
which bypasses the Bosporus and Dardanelles straits.

it is not a kit product. do you want to build one? do you have a logic
analyzer, or can get/construct one?

i can furnish guidance. you can build one out of simple ssi/msi (74xx)
components if you want to. kind of fun. i have built three, using wire
wrap techniques, two 8 bit and one a stereo model that is 12 bit

in hardware terms, it is a 1024 long 14 bit memory, with an exponential
adder (each memory cell is the result of the present sample/128 added to
the sample already there) synchronized by the 60 (50?) Hz line frequency.
if you have good construct skills you can use a 12 bit A/D, but if a bit
of a clumsy sort (like me) you can do it with an 8 bit one.

good luck. mike w7dra

i still have two of the dans build by len yee for inspire, but are
keeping them for Dennis or Univ of FL, in case the ones they have break
beyond my ability to repair them.

there are two dans hanging around, my design and the one built by the
stanford star lab, i have tested the star lab version out - and it works
about the same, it is based upon the same principle, but is a much better
hardware design. it uses mostly cdxx logic

again, good luck mike w7dra

I tore an old monitor apart, for parts, tonight, and realized when I
got to it, that the degausing coil, that wraps around the picture
tube, is a free VLF antenna coil. This one had a figure 8 shape that
made it open up to about a 24 inch diameter coil (even though the
monitor was only 17 inch) consisting of about a 11 ounces of 25 AWG
(.018" O.D.) wire. It is wrapped with black tape and has a two lead
connector. Staple that to a piece of plywood and you have a starter
antenna that reduces the landfill.

About a year and a half ago I worked with researchers who were using
HAARP to study the precipitation of ring current ions from the
magnetosphere into the upper atmosphere as a direct consequence of
artificial radio waves. The idea was to use HAARP to modulate the
auroral electrojet overhead so that it would produce whistler waves. The
waves were then expected to propagate out into the magnetosphere and
scatter energetic particles into what is called the loss cone where they
would "rain" down on the upper atmosphere. They combined HAARP with
optical instruments to look for the induced auroral emission.

While the facility might be used for other things, it is used for space
physics research.

For what is it builded ? Scientific research? military applications?

Thanks, a neat idea. Just make sure you don't accidentally "degauss"
the Earth's magnetic field when using your new antenna :)

Years ago (about 30) I was a land survey supervisor with the BLM in Alaska
and the HAARP site
(between Gulkana and Glenallen) was in my area. First time I saw it, driving
up the highway (if
you can call it that) was a vast area of glittering aluminum. Being a govt
employee with nothing
better to do, decided to investigate. Got to site & phoned from gate. Was
met, invited in, had
free coffee, tour of site, several of their people were hams and they all
seemed delighted to see
a strange face (no pun intended). From what I recall, the antenna field
consisted mostly of
vertical pointing yagis of the VHF size although there could have been VLF
ones around. The
transmitters were pretty hefty but I think most of the rumored power
(megawatts) is ERP, not
plate power although that was in the multi-thousand area. I remember them
telling me that
they were mainly doing work as ionospheric sounders measuring, like radar,
the height of the
ionosphere. I saw no indications of military influence. I'm sure this visit
would get me shot/jailed by Homeland Security now days. For an operation
involved with evil sinister motives (from what I
hear on the conspiricy SW BCST stations) they sure were open with me.

Hi Walt

They did a good job at hiding the "Truth" from you. Did you see a lot of Smoke

I have to chuckle at all the conspiracy theories that have arisen over HAARP. I
know, someone is going to tell me, "You do not understand".
At least some of these people are entertaining.

Oh, I see. Haarp, the HAARP we talk about today is much younger.
Maybe the area was in use by military people already at that

     Same scientific purpose: aurora/ionospheric research.
Occaisional power upgrades, as with other research.
Same silly rumours, almost from day one.

Hi,

I know the name eiscat. But I didn't think of it as a heating
experiment. But who knows. I'll try to read some or their
publications.

I especially like the induction magnetometer page, because they
translate the data into .mp3 files-- it allows you to actually hear
what conditions were like during the day (compressed to about a
minute, I think). Very eerie stuff!

I just timed one, and they are actually 19 seconds long. Still pretty
interesting, though.
