Bob,

The way AVI files are written is (annoyingly) that the file "index" is
written write at the end of the file. This means that if the SW crashes,
the computer loses power, etc... that the index is not written into the
file and it is not possible to do anything with the file at all. (For
what it is worth, this is one of the reasons we have increasingly moved
to MPEG which does not have the same problems.)

There are some applications out there that can try to rebuild a file
index. A good one is DIVFIX++ (http://divfixpp.sourceforge.net/) which
might or might not work depending on what codec you used. There are some
other similar tools out there (do a search for "avi repair").

I presume you can't simply just recapture the beast from its original
source?

Crashed file update.

It's still DOA. I have tried a number of programs and have had no success.
The VLC program did try to read the file and process it. The file structure
that was in the Newtek INFO folder consisted of 5 files, they are;

Organ 50th.avi.FormatContextCache
Organ 50th.avi.NewTekInfo
Organ 50th.avi.TimeCode
Organ 50th.avi.WindowsMediaDesc
VT Temp File [498098128,0].avi

My guess is that these files are combined into the avi file header when the
recording is manually stopped but with an abrupt crash this never happened.
Does any one on the list or at NewTek know of a way to finalize an abandoned
capture session?

This was something I was curious about too... if you crashed while writing, odds
are the whole file is there, just can't open it in VT or SE cause the header
isn't correct, the file didn't get closed. Some programs would ignore that, and
just play the file until it runs out. Might look at VLC , if that is the case.

VLC has some very cool features, one of which is the ability to stream a file to
a new file. Will take some mucking around, but if you can open the file and have
it write a new file, you'd be set. For something that is "priceless" its
probably worth taking some time to explore right?

On the same thread, the QuickTime player, if you have Pro version, can do about
the same thing. It could play or convert the file up to the part where it ends.

Hope that triggers something useful for you!

Thanks for the info Mark,

Not being able to set up a software RAID 0 is a big deal. In all that
I have read about the differences between Win 7 Home Premium and Pro,
I have never seen that as a difference. I realize it's probably not a
'consumer' issue so maybe that's why I have not seen it.

Can anyone confirm this? Can you create a software RAID 0 with Win 7
Home Premium? For that matter, can someone confirm you can make it
with Win 7 Pro? I'm sure I can find a Win 7 forum someplace and ask
this, but I thought someone (Blaine? others?) might know already.

I'm glad to hear VT5 is running under Win 7, I really didn't want to
take the time to learn Premier Pro!

Could it be that the .avi wasn't properly 'finalized' to allow it to
play. I know this happens with the quicktime wrapper on occasion. I
don't know if this program will work, but it might be worth a shot. The

FWiW - I've seen wonders performed with Data Recovery Wizard Professional:
http://www.easeus.com

One challenge is with how to install such software if your incorrectly-closed or
corrupted session is on your %systemroot% boot drive as the process of
installing the software can re-use the sought-after blocks from the earlier
session (as can the whole reboot/system-event-logging and virtual-memory
initialization process).

I saw José's post and note that he'd not used the SnapFiles product (I haven't
either) and thought to post what I've seen work.

There is a mode to recover in-place and a safer mode to recover off to another
storage volume. You also get to see what you'll likely be able to recover too.
Plus, when the directory structure cannot be determined the recovery process
quite nicely places all types of media into appropriate folders (and names the
files so they'll never clash with earlier recovered items).

FYI, for those needing no more than about 80MB/sec performance from their RAID,
the iSCSI-GigEth DroboPro seems to be getting a little cheaper now that it has
been out a while. I've heard nothing bad about it (when the price/cost is a
significant factor for the solution). I think it was José that brought that to

Dave,

No need to install 5.2b patch. I went from original 5.0 to 5.2c to 5.2d
when I installed Vista 64 Home Premium. VT5.2c installs QuickTime 7.5.5.

Home premium won't let you set up a software RAID 0, at least in Vista 64,
haven't gotten my copy of Win7 yet...

Take care...Mark

This is very good news - thanks for the information. Just to clarify,
if I was installing on a newly formatted disk, I would:
- install VT5 from disk (User Account turned off) and then, in order,
the updates VT5 b, c and d
- do not try to start VT5 after each one
- no need to be in XP mode (I assume you are using Win 7 pro however?
- since you said it was "not on".

I can't think of anything else that is different between Home Premium
and Pro that would prevent this working on Home Premium as well ---
anyone?

About Quicktime - does VT5d work with the latest Quicktime? And goes
Quicktime need to be installed before VT5 SW?

before working for Newtek, when he was at HT Electronics in Sunnyvale); and
Donetta, Bob Anderson and Chris Richardson were all at Newtek when I first
worked with them. We're going back 15 years. A good group of people with some
of the best still at (or back at or now at) Newtek. Scary how far back we all
go... :) That DevCon brought in a lot of folks we know - Aussie, Dave Hebel,
and more who partly launched their current successes with Toaster and Flyer.

I didn't take pics during Don Ballance's demo presentation of the 3Play and
XD300 - I think I just got absorbed in the wizardry. Newtek's come a *long* way
from when things looked bleak with the demise of Commodore earlier in '94 to the
remarkable accomplishments we saw at this road show. Maybe they'll have a
DevCon for the XD300 :)

If I hadn't used the PCmover program to move my programs before and after
installing Windows 7 then Quicktime (the latest version) would not have been
installed on a custom installation (which must be a clean intall over Win XP)
and the VT5 install probably would not have been a problem. As I mentioned
before, using PCmover "automattically" re-installed about 30 programs (including
Photoshop 7 and Quicken2002) from Windows XP Pro into Windows 7 Pro with few
problems which was a hellava lot eaiser than re-installing them one by one. VT5
and Mirage were the only programs that were a problem and some of that was my
fault.
I had been having problems with XP shutting down programs with no explanation
and was the compelling reason for updating to Win 7 Pro...plus I had
pre-ordered back in June for 1/2 price ($99). I'm the farthest thing from a
schill for Microsoft but Windows 7 is a lot smoother OS than any I've seen since
the Amiga.

Vt5d does work with the latest QuickTime. It is not installed by the
install. I always turn of the auto update feature of QuickTime so I don't
have any surprises.

I'll add my very recent experience - I couldn't find my project that I
had spent HOURS on and was panicking because I also couldn't find the
many still pictures I was using which I would need to rebuild the
project. I called tech support and James suggested I try the fairly
recent _untitled_ project files to see if I could find the project. Of
course, you have to do the "re-do all operations" previously mentioned.

When that didn't work, Jame suggested opening the Undo_Redo_ Folder_
and DRAG the file onto the timeline. This actually worked but did not
give me the project as individual clips. Instead, it was one continuous
file (looked like it had been made into a sub-project file). Anyway, it
was better than a complete loss. It isn't easy to find the right
Undo_Redo Folder though.

Good luck - I know how frustrating this is!

Where are you sending your Cache Folder? Was the capture drive fragmented?
Was this with FWire or an SX8/84? Did you do any Windows updates? What
OS? Sorry if this was stated already, I deleted a bunch of mail and can't
find your original post.

Windows updates is now adding NetFrameWorks3.x which would not let SEdit
open. Used my restore point and all is well.

GoodLuck....Don't point cache to the capture drive/raid.

seem to work. If I can recover the main file I have various CYB shots that I
can use to fill in on the final edit.

Thanks for sharing Dan. I went to the Nashville event tonight, and just
got home after a 2 hour drive. The 3 Play and the XD300 were both
really impressive and the Mini-cooper is just cool. Thanks to Don,
Zane, Phillip, Phil and Rex (and anyone else I'm forgetting from Newtek)
for putting on a great show. Thanks to Marshall Graphics for
sponsoring tonights event, haven't done business with you before, but I
think I'll be changing that in the future, especially since you have a
rep in town. The overlay tricks and virtual inputs are just really
impressive on the XD300, its definitely a big jump forward even
disregarding the fact its doing HD now. If you get a chance, go see a
demo and see Newteks new baby, shipping next month according to the show
tonight.
