Hello all amateur astronomers - many of you will be having plans of
taking out a telescope to a roadside location, for the International
Sidewalk Astronomy Day - the 12th, isnt it?

I do know that the Delhi, Mumbai and the Bangalore amateur astronomers
do have some plans along these lines - any other groups?

Could I please request you all to include a little help towards naked
eye skywatching for passers by and in particular - help them identify
a few of the constellations that form part of the star counting
regions - Leo, Virgo, Ursa Major, Auriga, Taurus, Gemini and so on.

And, also give out some small written material that talks of our
concerns with light pollution and ask them to submit star counts for
limiting magnitude measurements as suggetsed in the imo website

http://www.imo.net/visual/major/observation/lm

A simple writeup discussing the star counts in the Leo region, for
April observations is here

http://nehruplanetarium.org/taarewiki/pmwiki.php?n=Site.BeginnersHelpForAprilObs\
ervations

This activity is something falling very much into the spirit of the
activities for the 12th. If people post here and let me know the
locations where such activities are likely to be held, on the evening
of the 12th - I will make a combined press release, that would alert
people in different regions. Everyone could also add with their own
press releases and so on - it would be good to alert those who might
be interested into coming to these locations and participating.

Please do consider adding the star count segment to your other planned
activities - and please do post here and give information about the
locations where you are planning to conduct sidewalk observations.

We are looking at using a wiki for the archiving of the useful
discussions from all the Astronomy related yahoogroups/forums in India
(with credits and only if the owners, moderators and active members
permit), as well as for compiling data on quantifying light pollution
and/or other collaborative projects.

The very preliminary page so far created, is here

http://nehruplanetarium.org/taarewiki/pmwiki.php?n=PmWiki.TaareWiki

This is very preliminary and we are trying to learn a little more
about the wiki before having pages for archiving the discussions,
Institutional pages and individual pages for observations and so on.

Separate pages with passwords can be created for Institutions and
individuals wishing to make a large number of contributory
observations. One could also have some guest pages where anyone
wishing to submit a single or a few data points can upload them
without waiting to receive a password. The wiki will also have its own
search pages, which will be one of its very useful aspects.

I think, this would be a very useful exercise to pursue and everyone,
please do contribute with observations for quantifying light pollution
- I am working on separate writeups for every month, which would make
this excercise a possible one to do, for just about every one.

Subject: [VenusTransit] "Ask an Astronomer/Educator" for IYA 2009

Hello everyone,

Please do join yet another yahoogroup that has been created, for

co-ordinating

Astronomy Activities for IYA 2009.

A different yahoogroup than all existing groups is needed because we

would like to

make this group all inclusive - everyone, just about everyone, apart from

spammers would be welcome, and the level of discussion would need to

be very beginner friendly.

I am trying to reach as many students and interested amateur

astronomers as

possible, asking them to become members of this group

http://groups.yahoo.com/groups/Astronomy_Activities_2009

This group could function like a "Ask an Astronomer/Educator" site.

Anyone can

put in their queries in the group and everyone of us could join in the

efforts

to discuss that, as and when we can.

It would also help to have discussions about possible activities,

telescope

making, observations, measurements and so on, with interested

students, on a

daily basis (as and when our busy schedules permit).

There are many yahoogroups existing of course, but they are all aimed at

discussions for amateur astronomers from a particular region. We need

a group

with wider inclusion and also a group where the young students would

not be

scared away by seeing discussions amongst experts. But, the group will

need to

have professional astronomers, astronomy educators, seasoned amateur

astronomers

as well as beginners and students.

So, please do join this yahoogroup. I will also be sending separate e-mail

invitations to all the Venus Transit members.

The group is not yet properly active, but, I am hoping that activity

will pick

up in a few week's time.

Rathnasree

Dear Friends,

The start of International Year of Astronomy 2009 is now just about
10 months away. As you might know Professor Ranjeev Misra who is the
Chairperson of IUCAA's Public Outreach Programme (POP) has been
designated as the Single point of contact (SPoC) in India for
IYA2009. I, as an officer for POP of IUCAA directly report to him.

We have now set up the IYA09 India webpage which has the inputs from
various professional institutions.

Please visit

http://www.iucaa.ernet.in/~iya09ind

Please go through all the pages and do send me your inputs. If you
are an amateur astronomer or belong to an amateur astronomers
association or a NGO, please let us know your plans about
participating in IYA09 activities. We will announce those at

http://www.iucaa.ernet.in/~iya09ind/local_initiatives/activity_local_s

Dear Dr. Chandel,

Thank you for your message. It would be wonderful working with the
State Council for Science and Technology, HP, for some of these
activities. The skies of Shimla must be wonderful compared to the
pollution ridden skies of Delhi!

And yes, we will of course be collaborating with the Vigyan Prasar on
this - I am preparing letters and some other material to be sent
across to Prof. Kamble preparatory to this.

Krishnanand ji, thank you for your message. AT the moment, these are
all very preliminary plans and I will try and put in changes based on
all the feedback.

Jantar Mantar activities are actually always ongoing with our team. We
have done a lot of work with the calibration of the Jantar Mantar
instruments and also towards ensuring that students use the
instruments for learning projects related to positional astronomy.

But, yes, work at the Jantar Mantar obsrevatories willd efinitely be
one major ingredient of our possible activities :-)

Hello Prashant,

Do come to the Planetarium any sunday and we could discuss various
possible ways in which we could work together, towards implementing
some of these activities. Help from people like you who work with
school children and make them do hands on astronomy activities would
be very useful.

I am sorry about the delay in my replying - I have been working very
hard towards updating the webpages related to this and also putting
together other work in place so that the activities could take off.

should have some meetings in regard to this project.

           Dear Friends,

I am mailing to all of you asking for help in very many possible ways :-)

Please do look at http://www.nehruplanetarium.org/IYA2009/activities.htm

I have outlined here some thoughts for possible activities for IYA 2009 that can
be done - collaboratively by all of us - there are perhaps far too many
activities already listed here, but, suggestions for many more will be welcome.

Collaborating with these activities could mean helping out with just a subset of
the activities that tickle your interest or asking us to participate in totally
different activities suggested by you.

Please do join us for any of these groups of activities, or help in any way
possible through - feedback, sharing of resources, suggesting funding or sources
for materials, sharing your thoughts and activities, volunteering for the
conduction of activities - any which way that is possible, but, please do join
hands with us.

The structure of these activities have been made in such a manner that there is
a beginning with simple naked eye observations, moving on to views and
measurements through moderate aperture telescopes, on to a virtual experience of
multiwavelength studies through modern day telescopes and finally a glimpse of
the latest excitements in related areas of explorations. The areas of
explorations has been limited to those in some way connected with observations
made by Galileo with his telescopes (other than activity groups 6 and 9,
perhaps)

There are 9 groups of activities listed here :-

1. Taare sadak par - A program that is meant to ensure that some handmade
telescopes and a few dedicated amateur astronomers reach as many street corners
of India as possible, to gather interested people around the telescope and
ensure that they get to see some double stars, nebulae and clusters, the craters
on the Moon, the Galilean moons of Jupiter, Saturn's rings and the phases of
Venus. The taare sadak par program will also aim at quantifying light pollution
at various locations, by trying to identify the magnitudes of the faintest stars
visible with naked eyes, from a given locality, during different times of the
year. The taare sadak par program will also look at the Astronomical connection
of almost all Indian festivals and chart out activities for each festival. Along
with these activities, awareness against superstitious astrological beliefs will
be inculcated. And finally, the program will initiate long term projects for
some of the very interested
students, wherein they can look at archived data and visualise the growth in our
understanding of 1.) Visual and spectroscopic binary stars, 2.) Star clusters
and 3.) Nebulae. With modest telescopes, Galileo's observations of Mizar as a
binary star and the Trapezium region, with measurements of the angular
separations of stars, will be repeated by some interested groups of amateur
astronomers. The latest developments in the understanding of these objects as
spectroscopic binary stars, variable stars, and OB stars will be followed
through long term student projects.

2. Gali mein aaj chand nikla - This program will consist of awareness carnivals
related to Moon observations. Some of these carnivals will be centered around
Eclipses of the Moon and Lunar Occultations. The carnivals will also involve
activities to raise awareness related to multiwavelength spacecraft studies of
the Moon and the observations expected from the Chandrayaan mission.

3. Brihaspati Shani mela

4. A year of Venus observations

5. Suraj ki garmi se - sunspot observation projects

6. Total Solar Eclipse 2009 activities

7. A telescope treasure hunt

8. Sky as a Muse - The influence of Astronomy in Art and Literature

9. India's masonry and other heritage related to Astronomy

Please do look at the website I mentioned
http://www.nehruplanetarium.org/IYA2009/activities.htm for further details on
all of these. I will also be updating many of the incomplete pages soon, as well
as adding any material suggested by others (with credits, of course :-)

Please do give feedback on this.

Top Ten reasons why you should be at the Milky Way Voyage

1. The 1st and the largest star party in India. Its a start of a culture.
We have waited long for such a professionally oraganised star party.
2. A fleet of Jumbo sized telescopes lined up at the ‘Telescope
Grounds’ including several of the largest amateur telescopes in India.
3. Interact with best amateur astronomers from all over India.
4. The best telescope manufacturers and vendors will be present; you can
touch, feel and buy all the astronomical equipment.
5. Where else would you get a chance to visually observe through an
observatory 22" telescope.
6. Demos on - Observing techniques at the eyepiece; advanced
astrophotography from best astrophotographers in India; and, of course, tour the
Milky Way with Naked Eye.
7. A chance and a wide receptive audience to showcase your telescope work,
your innovation and your astronomy organisation.
8. Get some real work done under the clear and dark skies of Nainital.
9. Want a greater challenge than finishing the Messier Marathon? Join in
to complete the Milky Way Voyage - A New Wonder List.
10. We bet you’ve never seen 300 magnificent astronomers with their
light machines together on an observing ground around a 40" dome.

Dear Voyagers, Very Exciting things have been happening in anticipation of the
Milky Way Voyage.
The Wonder List of Milky Way Voyage is now complete! A brand new list for a
brand new star party. It contains 149 beautiful, spectacular and record holder
deep-sky wonders in the Milky Way. The List is organised according to the
galactic longitude of the object. Voyage objects are named from V-1 to V-149 and
all lie between 15° & -15° Galactic Latitude. Some exceptional objects which
lie between 20° and -20° galactic latitude have also been included. Examples
are Network, Cooling Tower, Northern Jewel Box, Fireworks Galaxy along with the
famous Lagoon Nebula, Omega Centauri, Eta Carinae etc. The Wonder list can
easily be completed with the help of a 8" or a 10" telescope. The Wonder List
contains objects distributed all round the Milky Way, consequently some objects
will not be visible from Nainital.
ARIES has agreed to make available 22” the second largest telescope at
Manora Peak the 22-inch for the use of Milky Way Voyage Participants.
Three largest telescopes ever built by amateurs in India will be unveiled
and have their First Light Ceremony at ARIES. Its really exciting to work
towards the Voyage!
Our aim is to gather Amateurs, Planetarium & Observatory Outreach,
Telescope Vendors to interact under the clear skies of Nainital. Awareness of
Amateur Astronomy in India is growing quickly and such a star party has become a
necessity. Such events are totally missing from the Indian Astronomy Calendar.
Milky Way Voyage wants to be an annual stage where fellow astronomers meet,
image, visually use instruments, see each other working and learn various simple
& effective practices followed by each other. The other important aspect of
Milky Way Voyage is the Telescope Showcase. Amateur Astronomers are encouraged
to bring their home-brewed telescopes and innovations in the showcase.
The logo of Milky Way Voyage is actually the Milky Way as seen from
Nainital, on March 8th at about 0200 Hrs. Looking east, our logo depicts a 180°
view. A little artistic license has been used, the Milky Way has been depicted
fully above and below the horizon. The direction is that of the famous Cygnus
Rift. We’re sure this logo will make a connection while you are at looking at
stars rising over the Himalayas of Uttarakhand. Ajay Talwar & Nilesh Vayada -
1st February, 2008

‘The Beginning’ of a Voyage of a Life-Time

The amazing sky above has always had the intriguing element in it. It has
made man to be afraid; wonder and respect it. You can’t even realise the
extent of impact of astronomy and astronomical events on our lives till you
actually take time out and ponder. You start to find it and simply get amazed.
Twinkle Twinkle little star is first poem that a kid learns, we celebrate all
our festivals according to the position of moon, sun or nakshatras, Christmas
marks the beginning of the upward motion of the sun from the Topic of Capricorn
towards the Tropic of Cancer, one will not be surprised by the fact that this
day was celebrated even before Christ.
The sky is the laboratory that is available to all and it is the teacher that
has always taught mankind. I am sure Milky Way Voyage will be an event that the
astronomy fraternity will be proud of, for years to come. We present you our
mother galaxy in a new make up. The motivation to look at it and say ‘Wow,
What a Beauty’. I hope that The Voyage will add a new dimension of thoughts to
all who participate. Sachin Bahmba, Founder and General Secretary, S.P.A.C.E.
Competitions Two competitions are running at the Milky Way Voyage. First is
the Best Astro-Photo Competition, & other is the Telescope showcase.

      Astrophoto Competition, Rules & Regulations:
1. Images submitted must be suitable under the heading of ‘Astrophotography
or Night Sky Photography or Space Photography’. A possible exclusion would be
bright red evening clouds over an observatory dome, noctilucent clouds would be
included! Submissions must feature the beauty of celestial objects, and show
technical merit.
2. Images entered must be submitted by a registered participant in the Milky
Way Voyage.
3. Images can be taken with any kind of imaging technique or medium (film,
digital, CCD, drawing), telescope or mount.
4. One or more participants may contribute to & submit one image.
5. Any number of images may be submitted by a person or team.
6. Any digital image format may be used. Image(s) can be submitted in a Print,
CD, Pen drive etc. (ensure digital media are virus free, else your submission
will be rejected)
7. Title and describe the image suitably. Submission must include time, date
and location of photograph, duration & number of sub exposures, full details of
processing done, Camera used, Telescope or lens used. Include name(s) of
photographer(s), astronomy association affiliation (or none). Include a
description of the target and methods and equipment used to acquire the image.
8. Images can be submitted via email to at@... or in person at Nainital.
Images can be submitted till 1700 Hrs, 7th March.
9. Contestants must be very careful about processing their digital images. Any
false colour introduction, misleading collage, mosaics, falsely
increasing/decreasing the size of objects will be viewed seriously and the
submission rejected. A clarification- this does not mean that collages and
mosaics are not allowed.
10. Prizes will be announced and awarded at Milky Way Voyage.
11. Copyrights to the image will remain with the photographer; Milky Way Voyage
will have the rights to use the photograph on their website and promotional
material.
12. These rules are subject to change as we discover our inadvertent errors and
omissions or other unforeseen events occur.

Telescope Showcase:
Telescope showcase will be held in the evening (before astronomical twilight) of
8th March. All participants who have
      a. made their own telescope,
      b. home brewed their own mount,
      c. constructed an innovation to be used with a telescope,
      d. built a gadget to be used with a telescope or astronomical activity,
can enter the telescope showcase. All entries will be lined up on the west &
south side of the 40” building on the telescope grounds. Participants will get
10-12 minutes to personally explain their home built creation to the judges. The
telescope (or innovation) has to be physically present to be eligible for the
contest. Photographs or charts, or an unfinished idea will certainly be
encouraged, but will not be eligible to participate in the showcase.

Shuttle Services: A full shuttle service will be provided to registered
participants of Milky Way Voyage, between Tallital bus stand and the
Observatory. Particiapants can transport their telescopes & equipment in the
shuttle. Shuttle service will remain in constant operation in the evening time,
and the morning return time. A few shuttle services will operate at night too.
Shuttle taxis will be marked with the Milky Way Voyage stickers and will start
from the Tallital bus stand, exact location is adjoining the Nainital Lake. When
the participants have any telescope and equipment to transport to the telescope
grounds, the taxi will go up to the telescope grounds. On other instances the
taxi will drop participants without any equipment at Hanuman Garhi, from where
the observatory is a pleasant and scenic one km walk on a trail. It takes 10
minutes to reach the Observatory from Hanuman Garhi.

Registration Desk: A Registration desk will be maintained at Hotel Sarovar,
Kumaon Mandal Vikas Nigam (KMVN) Tourist Rest House, Tallital (05942-235570,
231503), apart from the Voyage grounds. This desk will start operating from Noon
of 7th March. Here paritcipants can intimate their arrival at Nainital, inform
their hotel name, collect their registration material. The location for your
telescope will be allotted at the registration desk. Inquiries will also be
handled at the registration desk.

Telescope Grounds: All participant telescopes will be accommodated in an
area called the ‘Telescope Grounds’. The area is on top of the Manora Peak
around the 40” telescope building. Since the observatory is located at the
same location, any one spot will not be able to access the whole sky. Some small
portion of the sky will be behind the 40” dome. You are welcome to change the
position of your telescope anytime during the observation; there will be enough
space on the telescope grounds to do so. Do keep in mind that the shifting has
to be completed without the use of any bright light and minimum disturbance to
other voyagers. Keeping this in mind, you may ask for a particular location on
the telescope grounds at the registration desk. Possible locations are South,
West, North & East. Electricity will be provided for your telescope and
observation related equipment. While moving around on the telescope grounds,
please ensure that you do not
trip over someone’s electric line, or disturb other voyagers’ observation.
BRIGHT LIGHTS ARE NOT ALLOWED AT ANY TIME DURING THE LIGHTS-OFF PERIOD, RED
TORCHES TO POINT TOWARDS THE GROUND AT ALL TIMES.

Accommodation: It is participants’ own responsibility to arrange
accommodation at Nainital. There is an extensive list of hotels and their
telephone numbers at the accomodation page on our website
www.milkywayvoyage.org. Links to the hotels’ websites have also been provided.
There have been a few enquiries from participants about tents being setup on the
telescope grounds. ARIES has agreed and allotted a space for participants’
tents to be setup very close to the telescope grounds. Do keep in mind that bare
minimum facilities will exist to those who elect to stay in their own tents
inside the observatory premises.
Demos: We are arranging several demonstration sessions from experts in
their particular fields. The demonstrations planned are: Observing techniques at
the eyepiece; touring the Milky Way with naked eye; Basic astrophotography
techniques; Advanced astrophotography techniques. Help will be on hand to
complete the Milky Way Voyage and the Messier Marathon. And not to forget the
manual use of observatory’s 22” telescope.

Your Presentations: A room will be made available for the use of
participants’ presentations. Your can bring along your presentations on a CD
or a pen drive. A period of 10-12 minutes will be allotted to each participant.
Your presentations may be about telescope making, observing, a special
photograph, or a special observation trip etc. A computer and projector will be
provided in the presentation room.

There is full cellphone coverage at the telescope grounds from various
companies. Cell phones are a cause of an inadvertant light pollution and
participants must take care not to display the lighted screen prominently, move
sufficiently away before taking out from their pockets.

Registration is now open at www.milkywayvoyage.org. Participation is limited
to a total of 300. Please register yourself early to avoid disappointment. The
last date for registration is 15th February 2008. The fee for registration is
Rs. 500/- per participant. (which includes Voyage material, Snacks & Tea/coffee,
shuttle services between Nainital city and ARIES & and other facilities. See the
facilities page on our website.) The registration amount does not include
lodging, boarding.

Subject: [VenusTransit] Plans for IYA 2009 Activities

             Dear Friends,

I am mailing to all of you asking for help in very many possible ways :-)

Please do look at http://www.nehruplanetarium.org/IYA2009/activities.htm

I have outlined here some thoughts for possible activities for IYA 2009 that can
be done - collaboratively by all of us - there are perhaps far too many
activities already listed here, but, suggestions for many more will be welcome.

Collaborating with these activities could mean helping out with just a subset of
the activities that tickle your interest or asking us to participate in totally
different activities suggested by you.

Please do join us for any of these groups of activities, or help in any way
possible through - feedback, sharing of resources, suggesting funding or
sources for materials, sharing your thoughts and activities, volunteering for
the conduction of activities - any which way that is possible, but, please do
join hands with us.

1. Taare sadak par - A program that is meant to ensure that some handmade
telescopes and a few dedicated amateur astronomers reach as many street corners
of India as possible, to gather interested people around the telescope and
ensure that they get to see some double stars, nebulae and clusters, the
craters on the Moon, the Galilean moons of Jupiter, Saturn's rings and the
phases of Venus. The taare sadak par program will also aim at quantifying
light pollution at various locations, by trying to identify the magnitudes of
the faintest stars visible with naked eyes, from a given locality, during
different times of the year. The taare sadak par program will also look at the
Astronomical connection of almost all Indian festivals and chart out activities
for each festival. Along with these activities, awareness against superstitious
astrological beliefs will be inculcated. And finally, the program will initiate
long term projects for some of the very interested

students, wherein they can look at archived data and visualise the growth in
our understanding of 1.) Visual and spectroscopic binary stars, 2.) Star
clusters and 3.) Nebulae. With modest telescopes, Galileo's observations of
Mizar as a binary star and the Trapezium region, with measurements of the
angular separations of stars, will be repeated by some interested groups of
amateur astronomers. The latest developments in the understanding of these
objects as spectroscopic binary stars, variable stars, and OB stars will be
followed through long term student projects.

2. Gali mein aaj chand nikla - This program will consist of awareness
carnivals related to Moon observations. Some of these carnivals will be centered
around Eclipses of the Moon and Lunar Occultations. The carnivals will also
involve activities to raise awareness related to multiwavelength spacecraft
studies of the Moon and the observations expected from the Chandrayaan mission.

3. Brihaspati Shani mela

4. A year of Venus observations

5. Suraj ki garmi se - sunspot observation projects

6. Total Solar Eclipse 2009 activities

7. A telescope treasure hunt

8. Sky as a Muse - The influence of Astronomy in Art and Literature

9. India's masonry and other heritage related to Astronomy

Please do look at the website I mentioned
http://www.nehruplanetarium.org/IYA2009/activities.htm for further details on
all of these. I will also be updating many of the incomplete pages soon, as
well as adding any material suggested by others (with credits, of course :-)

Please do give feedback on this.

Hello Madam,
Its great to know about this amazing series of
activities. It's a fantastic plan to popularize astronomy, thus bringing folks and
people more and more close to Astronomy, the mother of all sciences.I would like
to help in many possible ways such as providing telescopes for
observstions,voluntaring diffrent observational programs,providing resource
persons for these jobs.I would like to suggest that for all these activities we
need a strong coordination in between volunteers, amature astronomers and
N.Planetarium.So,better we should have some meetings in regard to this project.
once again ,i would like to thank you for mailing the details,as i want to
contribute a lot to most of the astronomical activities but we are not informed
about that, even though we are a member of AAA.
   Thanks

The Milky Way Voyage (MyWave'08) organising committee for Year 2008

MyWave'08 is well under way, bringing a wide array of Amateur
Astronomers, Planetarium & Observatory outreach Personnel from all
over the India to Nainital in the Spring of 2008. This is the First
ever National Star party being organised in India. Milky Way Voyage
wants to be an annual event, evolving and getting better with each
passing year.

Milky Way Voyage will take place at Aryabhatta Research Institute of
Observational Sciences, ARIES, Manora Peak, Nainital, Uttrakhand,
India on the March 7th - 8th, 2008. The location will be Telescope
Grounds, between the 40" Sampurnanand Telescope and 22" Telescope
Building at ARIES. Milky Way Voyage will start in the afternoon of
March 7th, with a few light hearted presentations. Telescopes will
gather under the crystal clear skies of Nainital on two nights near a
new moon. The largest amateur telescopes in India will be on site for
viewing the heavens.

Invitation is extended to all Amateur Astronomers, Planetarium
Educators, Observatory Outreach persons and Telescope Vendors in
India. Milky Way Voyage will be able to offer a wide platform for
interactions between Amateur Astronomers themselves and with
Planetariums and Observtories across India. The current level of
amateur astronomy in India is growing quickly. This star party will
certainly be an eye opener for some, and oppurtunity to interact with
people of similar interests for others. We are sure that all
connected with astronomy in India will take advantage of this
opportunity. Milky Way Voyage organizers are striving to create an
national gathering that will provoke, question, enrich, and inspire
all attending astronomy community members. Participants are
encouraged to bring along their telescopes to the Milky Way Voyage. A
strict lights-off philosophy will be enforced at the Voyage for best
visual and photographic observations.
