Have been trying to transfer Mini DV tapes via 3 different cameras,
one a semi pro and 2 consumer models to my new laptop and my 2 year
old Acer, which has always been ok in the past.

The new laptop and the Acer have a Sata drive in them I am trying to
dump the video on, but the video is jerky and jittery, almost like a
strobe effect. Older videos on the IDE drive in the Acer seem fine.

I was wondering if anyone else had experienced this with Sata drives?
This is the only clue so far, so I am clearing off the hard drives
onto an external one to make room for new captures.

My old Dell (6 years old) was fine with video, crystal clear and no
jitters. A bit slow with the rendering on premier pro 2, but
otherwise fine. So much for new technology!

Regards,

Neil.

This is more or less what we're doing now, but what we want to do is
interrupt and manipulate the signal before it is sent to the projector
- in effect so an unmanipulaed signal appears to be a realtime
representation of what someone is doing, but occasionally the feedback
is out of synch with their behhavior. So some knid of 'box' will be
necessary.

Hi Charles,
If its a PAL signal from the camera I would suggest just connecting
this direct to the projector if you want to view the picture in real
time. You could then take a split (or loop from the projector) to
record onto the MAC. I don't see any need to put it through the MAC to
get to the projector unless there is something you didn't mention?

Hi Folks - New member with a slightly offbeat question. I work in a
Neuroscience Lab and we need to capture video images from within an
MRI scanner, route them via a computer (Intel mac probably) and
rebroadcast them via a projector. All of this needs to be done in
close to real time.

We have a scanner safe / magnetically shielded camera that provides
PAL / half frame rate (I assume this is 25 fps) via an RCA output.
What we don't have is a suitable interface box to allow close to zero
latency (ideally less than 100ms) image capture at the computer.

Are we attempting the impossible or is a suitable interface available?

Not sure if this is the right group for this, but here goes.

I have a Macom3VP controller and what looks like a multiplexer, model
RVC8CB, with 8 camera inputs and 1 monitor output. It has a 5 pin din
socket which I presume goes to the controller somehow.

The controller only has 2 wires via a 25 pin serial socket (RS485?)
where 3 pins are connected, green, yellow and blue. Only the yellow
and blue are terminated in a power supply box that go to a 24VDC cable
with 4 smaller wires inside, only the orange and yellow are connected
to the previous.

Anyone have a clue?

TIA.
Neil.

Hi James,
The others are correct, and the 'scrambling' of the signal is done
off the visable screen area, so certain makes will just recognise it
and not record. It used to be called 'macrovision', and only a few
years ago, there were devices to remove it, bit like dvd decyptor is
used nowadays.
Both have been removed from the market, but maybe e-bay would
provide a source. I bought one in a junk shop that simply plugged
into the scart socket of either the vcr or the dvd and that removed
it. Maplins used to sell them, but they too were forced to remove
them from the shelves.

Even some camcorders will recognise it, so there's no getting away
from it! (Especially sony/jvc.)

A video capture card (as suggested below) or usb analogue to digital
video converter should do the trick as suggested. The usb being the
easiest to install on a pc. Pinnacle do various types, but be
warned, when their software goes out of date,(usually not supporting
the newest OS) finding support or drivers can be a futile exercise!
(I speak from experiance!)

Hope it goes well, let us know what 'works' if you sus it out.
Neil.

Hi James

As Rob has just said it could be down to a signal contained within the tape
preventing the download to a DVD recorder. (Some DVD recorders react to this
signal, to prevent copyright issues)
   One question.
Have you got an analogue capture card in your computer. A direct video out
from your VHS player, to all of the capture cards I am aware of, will allow a
straight copy to your hard drive and then either make your DVD on the computer
or play the signal out to your DVD recorder.
   This may remove the problem

Was this a pre-recorded tape, bought from a shop (ie a video movie) or something
you recorded yourself? Some machines have spoiling technology built-in that will
not allow you to copy legit video movies. If you run a google search, you may
find there are options available to overcome this problem. Alternatively, a
timebase corrector interposed between the video and the DVD recorder may also do
the trick.

Rob

Right now, we are trying the TELE system Playlist.
It is a product from Stream-Labs from Ukraine.
One thing we surprise about it is able to receive plenty video codecs
even the matrox, pinnacle, and canopus ones, so it easier to us to
have no more Injest Machine so it will direct from Post production
Suite. And It is equipped with the CG included on the software.
Surprisingly..it less that US$ 2000.
The one I worried about is the after sales and marketing of sales
approachment that doesn`t seems common for us.

If this is beyond the scope of this board (because it's more audio
than video), please suggest what board would be appropriate.

I have just lost sound in only some applications and I can't figure
out why.

Itunes and Windows Media Player work. And I can watch a TV show on Fox
On Demand.

Yahoo and YouTube video and Skype don't produce a sound. Nor do videos
on FoxNews or CNN. System sounds are not heard either.

BTW, I recently installed Spybot, but I don't think that's it.
Everything was working fine for at least a week before I lost the sound.

CBS Video just hangs (no audio or video) but I suspect that may be
because of Spybot. It was OK before.

Strange, huh?

I've fiddled with settings, unplugged and plugged and rebooted, found
no yellow question marks.

Any ideas?

Hi Neil,

I'm using Sony z-1's. I like them, but they are still moving tape
or spinning a disc.

I've demoed the Pana HPX-3000 P2 camera's. This is the end all for me
along with our Matrox Axio editing system.

They have a little editor you can carry along and finish the program
on site too.

I'd like to get two Panasonic's, I think they look equal to if not
better than the Cine Alta line.

Best Regards

At the end of this month or so, I will be buying some pro cameras to

I wondered what people thought about the Panasonic P2 range of cameras
that are coming out, and anything I should look out for.

Most of the work (gigs) will be edited live, for a quick post
production of the event the next day for the punters to purchase on
DVD before they leave.

The reason for the P2 will be to have fill in shots when needed, if
the main edit doesn't go quite to plan for whatever reason. Also, it
will provide a near on instant copy on the editing pc for insertion to
the main edit. (No need to stream tape to pc.)
Any thoughts are welcomed.
Neil.

With the example you provided that's one of the 'low-cost' solutions I know.

Then you have the full broadcast automation types like, Omnibus G3 Colossus,
You also have the Harris louth, Drake, Encoda (whatever name you prefer to
call) that Pete already spoken about, there is also the Landscape IBIS.
This kind of central automation type systems, are automation only.
They simply control remotely any kind of broadcast playout servers as
Quantel, Omneon, Thomson, and several external devices to make an on-air
channel.

There is some solutions showing up in the market for low cost playout
channels, but I think even those you have first to think about what is the
final objective, and what type of channel you are designing/building

Hello,

If you looking for something as automation with video server capabilites,
check also the Omnibus iTX system. It's a channel in a box solution, and
works nice.

Outside that you have the full broadcast automation systems

By the way you describe things, you are a sales-engineer for your
company.... am i correct? This is probably not the best place to be
posting your enquiry if that is the case.

You need to define what you mean by On Air Automation. At the TV
station i work at as studio engineer we've had a long relationship
with the Industry Standard Louth System software supported by Harris
(do a GOOGLE for more info) which we run two seperate TV stations
with, one that has multiple networks (to allow different commercials
to be played to air at the same time for different parts of the
country during the break).

The On Air Automation system allows all programs, commercial breaks,
live events (News time) to be preloaded into schedule weeks/days
before and the software then controls a vision switching desk such
that transitions between sources of material are made to the exact
time and video FRAME. There is a single operator whose task it is to
check the commercials go to air at the correct time and to provide
countdown to another control room when crossing live...

You need not be concerned with the way the pictures/sound 'travel'
when concidering an On-air Automation system. It could be any system
be it analogue to one of many digital standards handeled by other
equipments.

I hope this clarifies your question.

Hello Salomao

Greetings from Jakarta.
May I know where are you working now.
For the On Air Automation, because my company works on Broadcast
system designer, we need to have some enrichment about the latest
technology of On Air automation, specially the Ones that has B class.
What B class is the Ones that work with codec about 25mb/s such as
DV, Mpeg1/2, or others. Our company is familiar with Playbox system
from Bulgary, but recently we need to expand for other products that
might has cheaper price.I hope you can help Us.

Thankyou

IIS, JAKARTA- INDONeSIA
