Good to hear from you. Right now current projects range from feature films,
to short installation pieces for the National Museum of history. Just about
anything that needs hi tech and where the method of distribution is
controlled. Also working on projects where people know the life expectancy
is several years down the line. One is getting stock footage for a cruise
line. They know they are going to be using it ten years from now. It is
great for hi tech trade shows. The 700's are currently rented for most of
October. Hope that is an indication of what is to come. The 700p's are
scheduled for around the first of the year. We'll see on that. Do you have
a web site I can check out. We have a couple in case you are interested.
HiDef.org and apsnw.com. Stay in touch and let me know what is going on in
Salt Lake.

Hi Kurt; I hope to be acquiring an HDCAM as soon as I can get the people
here in Salt Lake City to see the future. Right now no one gets it, they
still want to shoot film & Beta... What type of HD projects are you working
on? How often do you rent your 700A? When do you expect to take delivery
on the 700P you guys have ordered? Anyway I could go on forever.

Hello There,

I think this group will survive. I work at a TV station in Brazil. I
usually deal with satellite, FO and MW links for video transmission. I'm
often interested in discussing digital video, SD or HDTV, MPEG2 compression
system, decoders, encoders, standard converters, SNG equipment, ... .

Hi. There are really people out there. I guess it is introduction time. I

I am looking for an External MPEG1 encoder that I can use with a laptop. I've
tried the Dazzle USB, Pinnacle's Studio MP10 and several other "consumer
grade" products. None of them deliver what I need.

We do lots, I mean LOTS of legal videos (not glamorous or very creatively
fulfilling - but it pays the bills). We can get 2 hours on a svhs tape, and
with Darium's MPEGator, we can get 2 hours of MPEG1 on a CD. But the MPEGator
is a full size card and not very portable. After digitizing, there is 1 big
MPEG file on a CD. Not rocket science, I know – It’s no big deal. Normally.

The closest I came was with Pinnacle's Studio MP10, I had the control over
video and audio bit rates, color, contrast, hue, brightness, etc... All the
control I would need. However, no matter what bit rate I ran, the audio would
always creep out of sync the longer the MPEG file was. When you got towards
the 2-hour mark, it looked like a bad copy of a foreign film.

Darium pulled the plug on their external usb MPEG1 encoder (which looked like
a VERY good solution) Any ideas out there?

Thanks Ya'll - Jerry

Hi!
Glad to see some response from the list. I run some facilities here in
Singapore. We have a filming outfit with two Betacam SP units, a chroma key
studio. We dry hire for 16 & 35mm filming. Our post facilities comprise Avid's
Xpress & Composer, DL's Edit, Flint & Smoke, Ursa Telecine with Da Vinci Colour
Correction (available through an associate). Our 3D animation is done on
Lightwave with Alpha rendering stations. Maya is on the way. And finally we
finish sound in our Protools suite with an outboard 02R.

Hello.

I am too. :-) I signed up on this list about 6 months ago and you are the
first persons I've heard from!
My name is Sebastian. I work with VlabMotion NLE system on Amiga 4000, but I
have got my own list in Polish and I write here more posts.

I'm actually here to. I work for a PBS affiliate. I am their webmaster
and a producer, they kind of think of me as a utility player on a
baseball team because I can do about anything needed. We use a Media 100
system for NLE. We use After Effects and Aura for compositing.
Photoshop for 2d graphic work and Lightwave for 3D animation.

Hi all,
I'm glad there are others out there. Most of the time we are editing videos

Hello Phil -

I signed up on this list about 2 weeks ago and you are the first person I've
heard from. Maybe we are the only people who are out here!?!

Let me try this...HELLO!.....HEllo....Hello......hello....
ANY BODY OUT THERE?....OUT There?...Out there?....out there?...

Looks like it's you and me Phil.

I've got a question about your Casablanca. What format does it convert the
video into for editing - avi, MPEG?? Our end product goes out on CD and we
currently use MPEG1 (MPEG2 is just around the corner) Does the Casablance
allow you to copy the edited video in it's Casablanca format (MPEG, AVI)or do
you have to output to tape?

Thanks for your time. Welcome to the onelist.

Jerry

that right? It seems to have a very high potential.

Hello to everyone on the list. I thought that being a new 'subscriber' to the
list, I would take the opportunity to introduce myself, I hope that is
considered appropriate.

I reside in Lancashire UK and, I have been involved with video since 1993.

I have a panasonic MS-5 S-VHS camera and a small Sony Hi8 model. I use a
Phillips S-VHS edit deck and other kit includes colour corrector, Digital mixer
(Videonics MX-1). I also use an 'Amiga' 1200 for simple titles.

I look forward to taking part in the discussions here.

Regards,

Mal.

Hi all... i am in the process of trying to make my home home videos.. most of
what i have read deals with non-linear editing and high end prosumer. eg hi 8,
3/4" etc.. what is out there for the beginner.. I currently am usins two rca low
cost vhs vcrs.. a sharp vhs camcorder and an rca camcorder,, as well as an egg
cam. I have a pentium 200 mmx.

I am hoping to use a combination of linear and non linear editing..but all i
hear are things about needing panasonic or lanc c (sony ) connectors. no vcrs
using infrared. a horrendous amount of hard disk space, edit controllers, tbc,
switchers, gen lock etc.. I do not have a lot of money but i am good at
electroncis.. does anyone have any ideas, suggestions, tips, howto's, circuits,
schematics etc.. that may help me. .i have adobe premiere and ulead studios. and
a capture board that came with my egg cam and a pc2tv ati 4meg video card....
and about 6.2 gigs of harddrive.. any advice ,assistance etc would be greatly
appreciated.. this will be for making home video (amatuer ) only.. not
commercial or $$$ projects.. thanks in advance for any ideas you may have..

I would like to thank all of you for subscribing to one or more of the
lists I moderate on OneList. My apologies if this message reaches you more
than once.

Some of these lists have caught on like wild fire, others have yet to get
any threads started.

I urge you to start a conversation. State an opinion about the subject.
See who agrees. See who disagrees and why. I'm sure everyone will learn
something in the process.

A mailing list is only as good as it's participants. If you think things
are slow, you're as responsible as anyone for the lack of messages. If you
give it a try, I think you'll find that it's very rewarding to be active in
a mailing list.

For those of you who have been active, Thanks! For the most part, everyone
has been very polite and there's been little if any need for me to get
involved. That's great.

If you would like to join some of the other mailing lists I moderate, check
out http://www.gate.net/~rvaughan/mailing.htm for descriptions of the lists.

One housekeeping note: Onelist needs to expand the system again. There
will be some downtime tonight from 6PM to Midnight Pacific (US) time. No
messages will be lost, but they'll be delayed while the changes are being
made.

Thanks,

Ray

Here's this month's message from your friendly mailing list manager ;)

I really want to thank you all for joining these lists. The number of
people on some of these lists is really impressive. Others are still a bit
slow to get popular.

But here's the problem: On some of the lists, you're being too quiet!
There are a lot of people here that are ready to help, or be helped. All it
will take is a few questions to get things going. Please don't be shy.
Just jump in and say something! Take a moment to intro yourself and tell us
why you're here and what you hope to learn or teach.

Thanks for being a member of these lists. Please pass the word and tell a
friend.

Ray, List Manager

It's about time for another message from the manager...

These lists are growing, slowly. I ask you to please stick around. Things
will get busy once OneList catches on. Right now I know many of you are too
shy to say something... you're waiting for someone else to start a thread.
Well, get over it! Start a message. Give us an opinion releated (even
slightly) to the list's subject. I'm sure someone will repsond, and that
will get the flow going.

So, who's going to break the ice?

Ray Vaughan, List Manager.

I'm looking for ideas on a CHEAP way to get decent video out of a computer.

Here's the concept:

A computer connected to a building's Master Antenna system using a
modulator. Since the modulator needs NTSC video in, I know I'll need one of
those $100 VGA->NTSC converters.

On the screen, I want to show full motion video with mono audio. Think of
it as a 'how-to' video that will play over and over again. Maybe for months
at a time. I've seen how good MPEG II is, that's too good (too expen$ive).
I like the idea of MPEG I, but I've never seen it full screen, just want you
see when you use NT's built in MPEG player. What are the options for
something full screen that doesn't require special hardware to decode?

btw, being able to update the files by modem is a real plus to this. Yes,
the files will be huge, but since they're a free call away, who cares how
long the call is? I invision a network of these things around town.

I know 10 years ago, the usual way to do this would be a cheap VHS playback
deck on auto rewind. At least once a month, you replace the tape and/or
deck. Fair results on the TV, but the hardware costs, and needing to visit
the site every month kill that method.

How much storage space will an hour of video take up? I hope to do about a
3 hour loop on low cost IDE drives. Can I encode these myself? What speed
CPU would I need to run it?

How would YOU do such a thing? Is there a better approach?

Thanks

Ray

Thanks for the intro Ken.

I do hope we get some more ice breaking messages here.

I work for an interactive music video network, so I'm around video all
day... but my role is more on the telecommunications side. I also do other
video work on the side. For example, cameras around town to keep an eye on
traffic.

I hope this list covers all aspects of video, but the artistic and technical
sides of the business. I hate seeing everyone assume that the other side
will be handled by others. I'm sure if you produce, you would like to be
able to do basic troubleshooting on your switcher wiring... like 'what do I
do about this line that drifts up the screen (hum bar). Us technical types
might want to know more about how to make a shoot more visually effective.

Speak up everyone.

Ray,
List Manager.

Welcome to the list!

I know some of you are wondering, 'well, I signed up, where is everyone?'

Well, as the list manager, I can tell you a lot of people have signed up,
but no one is talking yet. I was expecting this. Everyone is always shy,
afraid to say the wrong thing. Well, get over it! Go ahead and start a
message, mention something, and lets get some good threads going.

OneList is fairly new. So far, it looks good, but I start to wonder if
there will be more lists than users! I'm sure everything will work out.
But, the quality of the list is not how many are on it, it's about what
they're saying. It may take a couple months to get a steady flow of
messages going.

Please pass the word about this list to your friends, co-workers, anyone
that might be interested in the topic.

If at all possible, please post an answer or response to the list. That
question you're answering might be on the minds of a few people. Let's all
learn from it.

I hope we can all start learning real soon.

Ray Vaughan, List Manager.
