To answer your questions:
1. The maps have to be stored in the internal memory of the Visor
Prism. There's 8MB and that's pretty good for "regional" coverage.
However, if you've loaded your Prism up with lots of software and
games, then you may / will have to shuttle maps in and out of the
internal memory.
2. Don't have my Prism in front of me and cannot tell you what
mapping software is on my Visor, however, maps are not too large. I
want to say 500K as a maximum and this is the mapping software that
came with my Magellan Companion module. As this is early GPS
technology, the streets are just rough representations of streets
(simple lines) and very limited in POIs (shopping arcades).
The mapping software makers knew the limitations of the Palm and
broke up most all of the US into States and Counties and then into
data chunks of 500K max (most smaller) each. So with the mapping
software I have, you've got to know the counties of the states you
will be passing through to see your route in a continous trip. Like
I said 1st gen.
I also have PiTech's Memory modules as an accessory for my Visors. I
use the module to load up maps of the States and Counties if I take a
long trip and shuttle them into and out of internal Prism memory as
necessary.
The included software for my Magellan Companion GPS is all black and
white. I have not tried other software as maps with color and more
detail (POI, etc) require more memory.
I have also heard Mapopolis is good however, never bought it before
they withdrew the software from their site.
I am now eyeing a BT SIRF III chipset antenna and some software for
my Palm TX.
Good Luck.
