I really like Twitter and try and keep regular updates of interest (rather than "I'm eating, I'm going out" etc). Finding people can be a bit tricky since there are no real ways to search, but luckily, Twitter posts are public information.
The best, easiest way to find something of interest on Twitter and therefore someone you may want to follow is to use the mighty Google.
In a normal Google search, you just need to search for the keyword topics of interest as you would for any other Google search, but add the site: syntax to restrict Google to the Twitter domain:
keyword site:twitter.com
This will search only Twitter for the keyword you are interested in.
From there you can check out the person who mentioned that keyword and see if you want to follow them, then check their followers and so on.
