Seventh Agricultural Ontology Service (AOS) Workshop
on
“Discovering the Unknown: Using Metadata and
Ontologies for Knowledge Extraction”
Bangalore, India
9 - 10 November 2006
The benefits of ontologies can only be fully exploited
if they are used efficiently within information
systems for extraction of ‘unknown’ knowledge. In
today’s exponentially growing information world,
there is a mounting need to extract the most important
information in the shortest possible time. It has
become vital to have systems that are able to provide
the most relevant results, while sieving through
mushrooming information systems, websites,
publications, forums, blogs etc. Although
cataloguing and indexing resources are important
steps, it is becoming increasingly difficult to
accomplish these tasks due to the lack of skilled
personnel, the cost of cataloguing and the rapid
growth of the available information resources.
Considerable work has been done to date in the area of
knowledge capture through the use of subject and
process ontologies. The AOS project covers, under its
name, ontologies on Food and Nutrition, Food Safety,
Animal and Plant Health, Fisheries, etc., each of
which captures knowledge in a specific domain area of
agriculture. The complete multilingual AGROVOC
Thesaurus, also available in the form of an ontology,
is rich with translations, synonyms and relations.
All of these ontologies have been used in information
systems to provide improved access to information.
However, much of this can be further enhanced through
the efficient use of ontologies for extracting the
unknown and hidden pieces of knowledge, not only for
providing efficient search results to the users but
also for iteratively improving the ontology itself. We
can achieve this only through the explicit
formalization of domain knowledge through its
elicitation from experts and by linking the ontologies
to actual or instance data.
The goal of the Seventh AOS workshop is to provide a
platform for implementers to demonstrate how
ontologies can extract and acquire additional
knowledge from existing agricultural information
systems. It aims to bring together research
communities, with special focus on agriculture, whose
members are interested in efficiently capturing
knowledge and in creating representations and
formalizations that can be useful for reasoning. The
activities of the AOS initiative are documented at:
http://www.fao.org/aims.
The topics of interest include (but are not limited
to):
· Automatic and semi-automatic metadata generation
· Decision-support tools
· Knowledge acquisition methods
· Knowledge elicitation techniques
· Knowledge extraction techniques
· Knowledge representation techniques (in ontologies)

[1st CFP]International Workshop on Semantic e-Science
欢迎大家投稿支持,或者在自己的实验室散发,谢谢!
International Workshop on Semantic e-Science 3rd September, 2006, Beijing, China. (SeS2006), co-located with ASWC2006 http://km.aifb.uni-karlsruhe.de/ws/SeS2006/ ---------------------------------------------------- =======Call for Papers========
In the successful series of Semantic Grid and e-Science events we intend to bring together researchers and practitioners around the world from the quickly developing research areas of the Semantic Web, Grid and e-Science. As semantic technologies are being widely accepted in various e-science areas such as life science or bioinformatics, it is necessary and urgent to offer semantically enriched methods, tools, middleware to facilitate semantic modeling, system building, searching, and data analyzing in e-science applications. Former Semantic Grid research aimed at the Grid level, in which often the basic premises of the science-like environment are forgotten or disregarded. Thus the main goal of this workshop is to lay the foundations for e-Science within the Semantic Web scenario.
The aim of this workshop is to ground Semantic e-Science firmly on the needs of the Semantic Web and general science research community. We want to encourage and stimulate discussion about the current state of the art in Semantic e-Science and its future direction. Currently, ontologies and the Semantic Web attract researchers from all around the world and from various disciplines. There have been many approaches of using ontologies in the e-Science domain, which has been introduced in several past Semantic Grid and e-Science events. However, the role of ontology in the Semantic e-Science research has still not been unambiguously formalized. On the other hand, ontology-based tools for various e-Science branches have been widely developed and already attracted the attention from traditional science research community and provided real cases and experience for applying Semantic Web technologies. We regard it as necessity to set a research agenda at this point in time, in order to steer the development and the research efforts in the most rewarding direction towards our common goal of realizing the Semantic e-Science. Otherwise we fear that effort, motivation and funding may be invested less effectively, slowing the realization and adaptation of the Semantic Web technology in the e-Science research. Furthermore, there is also a great opportunity for the building the collaboration between the EU and non-EU universities, especially Asian universities, which locate at the one of the most active economical areas around the world. The holding of this workshop would help to build closer connection between researchers from both sides, and consolidate the collaborations.
Main topics of interest include but are not limited to: ---------------------------------------------------- Semantic e-Science Foundations: * Semantic Infrastructure and Architecture for e-Science * Semantic Web and Grid middleware * Service Oriented Architecture for Semantic Grid * Scalability and flexibility of e-Science infrastructure * Semantic Data Integration for e-Science * Semantic Web services for e-Science * Ontology Engineering for e-Science * Web Trust for e-Science * Knowledge Management for e-Science * Complex e-Science Process Management * Complex Semantic Network
Semantic Web Applications and Ontologies for: * System Biology, Bio&Medical Informatics * Complex Biological Network Modeling. * Geography, Environment and Climate * Chemistry, Physics and Mechanics * Web Service applications * P2P applications * Digital Libraries and Scientific Publication * Ubiquitous and Mobile Semantic Web applications * Information Retrieval and Machine Learning * HCI issues and Usability * Case study and user issues
Submission and Proceedings ---------------------------------------------------- Interested authors should submit an electronic PDF and source version of their papers to Yimin Wang prior to the paper submission deadline. The first page of submitted papers should include: title, author names, affiliations, postal addresses, electronic mail addresses, telephone and fax numbers for all authors, and a brief abstract. All correspondence will be sent to the author mentioned as contact person in the electronic title page (by default, the first author). Submissions should not exceed 10 pages and should be formatted according to the guidelines of the Springer Lecture Notes. We are currently pursuing to publish the proceedings as a journal special issue and as printed proceedings.
Important Dates ---------------------------------------------------- Deadline paper submissions: June 20th, 2006 Notification of acceptance: July 20th, 2006 Camera ready deadline: July 31st, 2006 Workshop date: September 3th or 4th, 2006 (to be settled)

Well I just got married! I can't believe it, just last year I was beginning to
think i would never meet anyone. I'm 25 already and I thought it was all over.
After some recommendations from a buddy I joined up here:
http://www.funtimesaheadhere.info/rjaj and after 4 weeks I was already meeting
up with a beauty. Well, 14 months later and where still together and married =)
Wow, what a blast, what a trip actually. was kind of getting bored with the net,
was gonna get rid of my broadband and go back to 56k because i hardly used the
thing, and really, I didn't do anything much to need it. But last weekend i
found this crazy pickup thing, with webcmeras and all the gear. used to waste my
time trying to find gals on yahoo, but this place is like 100X easier. this
is the spot that made me decide to stick with my net for a bit longer
http://dontwaitnow.info/wdea . have fun, i did ;)
I found a great site for free magazine on net. It contains magazines in all categories. Click these links to subscribe for these magazines free. http://i.nl03.net/ltr0/?_m=01.009i.mu.mfm.mu

We are offering a research position (Wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter BAT IIa) for a PhD student or a postdoctoral researcher, on initial contract for two years, with the possibility of extending the contract. We are looking for a highly skilled person to be responsible for further development of the reasoner KAON2 (http://kaon2.semanticweb.org/). KAON2 is a reasoner for description logics which underlie the Ontology Web Language (OWL) – the language for building ontologies in the Semantic Web. It is currently one of the fastest reasoners available, which we achieved by developing several innovative and efficient reasoning algorithms that reduce inferences in description logics to query answeringon deductive databases via a resolution-based transformation. KAON2 is used in several large projects funded by the European Union, as well as for commercial purposes in cooperation with the company Ontoprise GmbH. Possible extensions of KAON2 include, but are not limited to, developing and implementing reasoning algorithms for advanced knowledge representation formalisms such as nonmonotonic or paraconsistent logics, extending the calculus for reasoning with concrete domains, extending the transformation algorithm to handle nominals, and improving performance by means of databases and heuristics. This position requires solid programming experience, if possible in an industrial setting, and also solid knowledge of mathematical logic and automated deduction. We are looking forward to receiving applications from candidates who have recently completed a Masters degree in computer science or a related field and want to pursue a PhD project, or who have recently completed a PhD degree and are interested in research and project work in an internationally acclaimed research group. THE STOCKHOLM CHALLENGE AWARD 2006 invites excellent ICT projects from all over the world to compete for the prestigious Challenge trophies. The Challenge is searching for the best initiatives that accelerate the use of information technology for the social and economic benefit of citizens and communities. The objective is to help local entrepreneurs, who work to close the digital divide, by bringing in research communities, development organisations and strong corporate initiatives.
THE AWARDS WILL BE HANDED OUT IN SIX CATEGORIES in the City Hall - on May 11, 2006. Special focus will be on projects in countries and regions with the greatest needs. There will also be an international Challenge conference in Stockholm on issues related to the role of ICTs in global development work.
THE AWARD IS OPEN FOR ENTRIES until December 31st 2005. The application form is easily accessible on the home page.
The Stockholm Challenge is headquartered at the IT University - a joint initiative by KTH (The Royal Institute of Technology) and
Stockholm University . It is managed by a consortium that also includes the City of Stockholm, Ericsson and Sida, the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency.
These are the basic rules for the participation in the Stockholm Challenge Award. All competing projects must:
1. Include ICT Illustrate how ICT is used to create new or better traditional services and/or products, which are beneficial for human and social development.
2. Be implemented All competing projects must be up and running. They should be implemented/piloted since no less than three months. The Stockholm Challenge Award does not accept drafted concepts and ideas only. The jury will only evaluate and compare projects that can show measurable outcomes and impact.
3. Be linked to and/or supported by an established private or public organisation.
4. Be verifiable, i.e. able to present credible references.
5. Be free from religious, political or other personal beliefs.
To be noted:
Projects that have won one of the Challenge categories in previous years cannot enter the competition again.
Innovation, creativity and the convergence of ICT with many different disciplines are some of the qualities that are looked for in the competing projects. The jury, a group of international senior experts, base their evaluation on the following criteria, most of which all Challenge projects should meet:
Innovation Competing projects should illustrate new and innovative ways of using ICT to improve the living and economical conditions especially of those with great needs.
Convergence The addition of ICT as a tool to traditional development work can improve and widen the scope of the project impact. Projects should show successful convergences of different disciplines and sectors.
Inclusion It is favourable for the competing projects to show that they bring individuals, groups and local organisations into larger communities national and global - such as medical, government, educational and cultural networks, as well business environments.
Equal Opportunity It is important that the initiatives counteract inequality related to the likes of gender, origin, age, physical and/or mental disabilities.
Sustainability An important factor is sustainability. Not only economic sustainability, i.e. how long the project will last and bring benefits to its users. Sustainability also includes the contribution of the project to a sustainable society and environment at large.
To enter a project in the Stockholm Challenge Award is not only to participate in a prestigious international ICT competition - it is also a way to join networks of some of the best ICT entrepreneurs and pioneers in the world. Testimonials from many of the projects, which have competed in their respective categories over the years, say that it is the inspiration, the new ideas, contacts and partners that are the greatest rewards for a Challenger.
The Stockholm Challenge represents excellent marketing through the exposure to media, and to private and public organizations that are involved in ICT work and implementations. It gives promotional opportunities for entrepreneurs, universities, cities, cities and regions. The Stockholm Challenge Final Events include a Best Practice Exhibition and a Conference. It is a meeting place for some the world's most successful IT entrepreneurs.
Winners and finalists of the Stockholm Challenge are global role models for cities, companies, organisations, schools and others who are involved in adapting and spreading the use of ICT.
