Hi, folks.

It's been pretty quiet here lately, so I thought I'd see if I could spark some
discussion by asking if anyone has any first-hand experience with the "Tomato"
firmware for the WRT54G (http://www.polarcloud.com/tomato).

I currently run DD-WRT on all mine, but Tomato looks interesting - in particular
the QoS appears more powerful than that in DD-WRT. I have a spare WRT that I'll
probably use as a guinea pig, but thought I'd ask if anyone has already made the
comparison.

Cheers, and happy New Year,
   Jon.

I’m one of the admins on the site, you have been approved.  I personally like to run openwrt, or dd-wrt, depending on the version and memory in the box.  If you have like a Linksys WRT54G V3 or earlier, I like Openwrt – It’s basically the same as last factory release, minus a bunch of bugs ("features"?) and with powerboost features (you are currently running at 50% or less), and reboot over the internet and a few other fun features.  Best place to increase your signal though is to get the 7dbi antennas.  Additionally, DD-WRT is Linux for these boxes on steroids, pretty rock solid as well, and I think I saw a fly the space shuttle tab on the last version.  I run DD-WRT v24 micro on one of my boxes (Fon), OpenWRT on a V3 and OpenWAP on a V1 WAP54G.  On top of that, I have 2 original SBC Two Wire Home Portal 1750s, so I pretty much blanket my whole court and the one on both sides.  I also have a Yagi antenna in my attic, and at my parents house 2 miles away, and can, from my parents house, see my home network.

Wrt54g version 3., firmware 4.21.1

I can set the day(s) and time, but still allows the one computer I
want to block after hours, through to the internet.

I want to block one computer, I know IP Address & MAC address, from
access the 2300 hours to 0600 the next morning.

Any other tips or pointers out there, to getting this enabled?

I have not upgraded from v23 to v24 but I have upgraded from older
versions to V23. In that case I did not go back to factory standard
software. It does require a long hardware reset once it is finished
before you can use the new software.

There is lots more information here:

Hello all,

I have a WRT54Gv3 that is running DD-WRT v23 SP2. I want to upgrade
it to V24 SP1. I'm not having any luck finding out how to properly do
the upgrade. I was going to set the router to factory defaults and
then run the .bin file in Firmware upgrade. Is this the proper way to
do this, or do I have to run the mini V24 and then run the second .bin
file? Do I have to go back to factory software and then run the .bin
file I need?

Just not quite sure how to do the upgrade and would like a little
feedback if you have done this already. Thanks in advance to any and
help regarding this.

What programs are you runing on your computers?

I run a bit torrent on one computer. Its cuases my router to go down twice a
day or so. I changed the QOS, port to low, and now the router does not go
off-line.
This might not be your same situation, but you might look for something like
that.

Well I found a post on dd-wrt.com
(http://www.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=341) which suggested I should be
able to do better than the bandwidth numbers I was getting, so I spent this
evening experimenting. While digging through the DD-WRT settings, I discovered
that I had firewall logging enabled; disabling it resulted in an immediate
improvement to 13.4kb/s down, 1888kb/s up, and a reduction in max Load Average
to around 3.5.

That result motivated me to implement a change I had been meaning to make for a
while. A few months ago, I bought a Buffalo WHR-G54S, which is based on the
later Broadcom 5352 chip rather than the old 4712 chip of the WRT-54GS, and I
had been keeping it in reserve for testing, so I decided to see how it would
handle the new load. I upgraded it to DD-WRT v24 (released a few weeks ago),
configured it identically to the existing box, and swapped them out. The
bandwidth numbers remained the same, but the Load Average dropped to just a
little over 2.0 even with the link maxed out.

So it seems that the older hardware can do a pretty good job of utilizing the
current "premiere" domestic internet offerings, but newer hardware does it with
a little more "headroom".

Cheers,
   Jon.

4.50 and the throughput maxes out at about 10Mbit/s. I thought this might have
been due to my QoS settings, but I see the same results even if I disable QoS.
To its credit though, the box does keep up, and does continue to manage the QoS

Besides, you are running with a WRE54G too, and that cuts your band width in
half, too start!
To extend your range, without cutting it in half, two using two WAP54G
teathered together. If you want more information, ask.

Andy,
The WRT54GS dose support full duplex Ethernet , so that would explain
part of the disparity in speed, however you didn't mention what
wireless card you have in the PC. Even these days using cards from
different manufacturers can cause issues such as you are experiencing.
It mostly has to do with settings, but can also be caused by non
standard features such as the SpeedBooster on this model.

You should keep in mind, your wired connection with any linksys switch is going to be 100mbps, possibly 200mbps but I can't remember off the top of my head if all of the support full-duplex mode. Your average wireless G connection is going to give you in theory 54mbps max and the more people are connected the less your going to get. Unlike a switched network, each connection on wireless does not get 54mbps, you have to divide it up between users, if I'm remembering correctly.
Its been a while since I studied the wireless protocols and tweaks vendors do to it to max out the speed, so if any of this is wrong/out of date forgive my ignorance.

Anyways, the best wired connection is always going to be better than the best wireless connection. So if your looking for the best speed and don't need to be free of wires, I suggest going wired as opposed to wireless.

Just my two cents.

Any ideas? Time to go back to Ethernet ?

about 15 feet apart, on the same floor. The WRT54GS is new, replacing
a BEFSR41 WAP54G combination. The slow WIFI may have been an issue
before, not sure...my son used to always complain that his PC (the
wifi one) was slower than in the days when it too was ethernet but I
thought it was his imagination. Today I downloaded a file that seemed
slow, I downloaded it again on the ethernet PC and it was 3-4 times
faster. I repeated the test with other files from different sites,
same outcome.

Any ideas? Time to go back to Ethernet ?

One way to do it is to add the IP or URL it is trying to access to your hosts
file and set it equal to
127.0.0.1. That way everything sent to that URL/IP address is sent directly to
the bit bucket
without ever getting out of your machine.

I have a program that I want to use called orbit downloader. But
after reading articles on the web, I noted that it has a "phone
home" behavior to a specific IP address. This might be nothing at
all. None of the articles that I read noted any suspicious behaviour
or spyware with this program. I just do not like ANYTHING that
connects to an IP address unless I manually tell it to do so.

I have a linksys wgrt Wireless G router. I know how to allow
INCOMING addresses. I know how to restrict INTERNAL ip addresses
from getting OUT of the network. But how do I restrict any internal
machine from contacting a SPECIFIC IP address, but allow it to
contact others. I really do not want to run a software firewall just
on this one machine. Since I only have a 2 machine network and the
firewall in the WGRT does just fine.

After reading the docs in the router's pdf file, all I could find is
how to block contacts to specific PORTS, or how to block INTERNAL IP
Addresses from using specific ports.

Before you ask I do not know which port that program tries to
contact at that address. The article only listed the IP address that
the program tries to contact not the port. AND NO I have not run the
program yet and done a netstat. I would like to find out how to
block contact to that ip address even before I run the program.

Thanks and I hope this is clear enough

Aw, I was so much into meeting vague new friends in jodhpurs. You've
spoilt it for me :-)
Seriously though, thanks for being on the case.

Here is what I would do:

1. Do a long reset on the router. This means holding the reset
button on the back in for 30 seconds. This returns the router to
factory settings. If you had shut off the DHCP server the last time
you used the router it would not connect.

2. Connect up a straight cable to your laptop.

3. open up a browser and put in 192.168.1.1 You should get a log in
screen.

4. If not open up a DOS command window and type ping 192.168.1.1
The router should answer the ping. If not then it is not listening to
its ethernet port.

5. I would then turn on a laptop with a wifi radio. Open up what
ever software you use and see if you can see the SSID of the router.
If you can repeat step 3.

6. If all of this fails the router must be bricked. Take a look at
this web site: http://www.linksysinfo.org/forums/showthread.php?t=47259

Hello all,

I dug out one of my routers and was going to put it to use.  The last time I was messing with it, it had dd-wrt installed.  I tried to connect to it via a Ethernet cable, both a straight through and a cross over.  Neither one worked.  I disabled all my network connections and just had the Ethernet port working on the laptop.  I connected the Ethernet cable to port 1 of the router.  The router looks like it's working correctly, the lights are on and flashes.

Any ideas on how to proceed?  Is it suppose to be a cross over cable or a straight through?

Thanks for any and all help regarding this issue.
