XP knows about two internet connections but does not use the second
one until the first goes down. In my case I have a laptop that has
both a wireless connection and a wired connection.

XP chooses to use the wired connection which is a 100 base T until
something happens to it. It then switches over. This is not what he
wants.

Unused bandwidth is a terrible thing to waste!!!!

It's easy to take advantage of your multiple connections if you don't go for a general purpose solution:

Examples (can do with Linux, not sure about WinXP):

a) You have 2 laptops, wired or wireless.  Set up your PC as a router with rules to direct each laptop's MAC address to route over a different Ethernet card. You then share the wireless connection but have separate ISPs.

b) Set up a special route for a heavily-used IP address, such as a file sharing server, to route over the secondary ethernet card. All your other traffic then uses your primary Internet connection. Also good for separating your VoIP traffic.

etc etc

1a. 2 Networks for load sharing?
Posted by: "Tobias Gogolin" usertogo@... usertogo

I have an interesting challenge: I have a cable Internet connection and
another DSL connection over phone lines at the same time.
For now I have them hooked up to the two Ethernet ports of my PC running XP
pro, however I haven't figured out how to use them both at the same time!
I wonder if I could use both at the same time to share loads and accelerate
transfers, and also make this faster combined network
accessible to my notebook computers via my WRT54G wireless router?

thanks for any hints...

At work we have a box called route science that load balances traffic
from multiple ISP's. This is a very high end (and expensive)device
and I'm not sure there is anything similar for home use but I could
be wrong. Search the web for the following : "Load
Balancing", "Multihoming" & "Session Balancing". Maybe you'll come up
with something. I know there are some boxes designed for the
small/medium office markets but the are anywhere from 10-20 grand.
Good Luck, DJ

Hi Tobias & DJ,
Great stuff, I hadn't thought about looking into this. A Google search
for "DSL load balancing" revealed some fascinating stuff, one of which
was a review that was great reading:

http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/content/view/30186/51/

Just providing info for discussion only, I haven't tried this
product/approach.
Best Regards,
Jon

Thanks those are really great replies guys!

However I am hesitating to buy yet another closed source black box, if it most likely runs Linux inside...

I recall that these type of routing challenges have been handled with Linux for a long time!
samples are:
http://blog.taragana.com/index.php/archive/how-to-load-balancing-failover-with-dual-multi-wan-adsl-cable-connections-on-linux/
http://www.debianadmin.com/linux-ethernet-bonding-configuration.html#more-77

Actually if I could set up another Linux computer as firewall and load balancer / auto failover, what are the chances that the same code could be run on an open source router such as a WR54G or a bit faster WRT300N?

I was able to install 3rd party firmware & my router is now stable.

A simple websearch of wrt54g v4 firmware will allow you see what 3rd
party firmware you can add.

Also, another forum that is more active & has info is: http://

Actually I've been using wrt54g since early v2 (VxWorks is v4 or v5
hardware where they reduced the size of the memory, don't remember off
the top of my head which version) and all of the stock firmware would
hang after a while. Most of the hacker firmware did not have this
problem.

Hi!

I read some time ago in a hacker (Eric Raymond) documentation about
WRT54G that the new firmware (VxWorks ?) introduces instabilities
previously not found in the first generation firmware for WRT54G.

one of them was exactly this limitation of uptime.

i'm a new user of new WRT54G equipments. could someone please confirm
that ?

All the best,
hilton

If the phone in question is a 2.4GHz cordless, then yes, it will interfere since
802.11b/g uses the same part of the spectrum. Switch to a 900MHz or 5.8GHz
cordless to avoid problems.

Ron,

Could your router be overheating? Where is it located? (Mine is in the attic.) Have you modified it in any way, including changing the antennas?

Hi Ron,
I presume that is the standard Lynksys firmware. I understand that some
of the early versions of this have a problem whereby if you run a p2p
application, a cumulative error occurs.
One of the strong points of the WRT54G is that third party firmware is
available for many models. I use DD-WRT which opens up a plethora of new
functions and gives enhanced stability.
The Wikipedia has a number of useful resources here.

Hi guys, I just went wireless everything is working great except after running all day I lose my ability to access the net, I have to unplug my router for 30sec replug it in then everything works great! could this be a setting? does it sound familiar? also I'm trying to secure my firewall and im trying to understand it! is there a link to a place that covers the linksys firewall and explains it all? and with the linksys firewall is there a way to stop traffic both ways so I can control what programs access the internet?
Thanks Ron.

Thanks for the quick reply,

Just a miser trying to recycle an old piece of equipment, but it seems
that it would be a lot more wasteful to convert it, maybe I'll find
something to do with the antenna.

The VHF and UHF frequencies  are likely to be in the range of 146 MHZ (VHF) and 444.000 MHz (UHF).  These are WAY different from frequencies in GigaHertz. To modify it, you would be reducing the size considerably.  MFJ sells a Yagi designed specifically for WiFi frequencies, it may be simpler to buy it, or copy their design and build your own. View the antenna at http://www.mfjenterprises.com/products.php?prodid=MFJ-1800

One can be built from rigid copper wire using foam board as "boom".  As with any Yagi array, you will need to get each element precise, the element spacing too.  If you are thinking more omni-directional, a simple vertical would be what you need.  However .at the Ghz frequencies , an omni-directional antenna is probably not what you want.

Andy.

I really have no idea about antenna's aside from the cantenna articles
I have read. Most of these have built in calculation tool on what the
length should be according to the circumference of the can.

Thanks in advance

He's talking about using a Bluetooth adapter attached to a WRT in order to give it Bluetooth support, not trying to use the existing radio in the WRT to run Bluetooth.

And, for the record, Bluetooth is in the 2.4GHz band with WiFi. Buuuut that doesn't mean that you can use one to do the other.
