Hi Ian,
As its probably my piece you are referring to as a "red herring" or part of
a "wild goose chase" with regard to whether they may have been more than one
object involved in the 1966 Westall events I thought I should respond:

If I thought like you, I wouldn't have bothered chasing up all the various
aspects to the case to try to get a measure of what may have happened. You
seem certain, based on what people told you, and you didn't see anything?
While I agree that most witnesses report only one object, a surprisingly
significant number report seeing more than one. I took a specific interest
in V.'s account because he impressed as a compelling and consistent witness.
He reported 2 objects. Shane Ryan advises me that while most reported 1,
more than 10 he has come across report more than one, usually referring to 3
objects. I was being told back in 1989 by a member of a family (of who 3 -
mother, daughter & son - were witnesses to various aspects of the 1966
episode) that she saw 3 objects of which two landed. While the author of
the Clayton calendar piece (who I have also spoken to) refers to just one
object, the iconic artwork associated with the 1966 article shows 3 objects
(perhaps an artistic flourish to show the trajectory perhaps?).
I think it is not a "red herring" or a "wild goose chase" to listen to what
people who were there and who saw something. The total picture is revealing
a complex jigsaw puzzle, which may yet come together. A strong part of that
puzzle seems to be the possibility that some of the observers back in 1966
may have seen more than object. Not everyone was everywhere that day. Some
saw things that others did not.
While we need to be mindful of the passage of time, the effect on memory and
possible confabulation of some, the process of "Chinese whispers" etc, some
measure of consistency is emerging. I agree we can be pretty certain at
least one object was involved, but it also seems there is some interesting
evidence for more than one.
Of course just what it was (or they were) is one of the uncertainties.
Regards,
Bill Chalker
