Whatcom, here's a deal that's hard to beat:
Look who you can hear talk to each other and to you Thursday night at 7:pm,
about Managing Local Resources!! ------ Brad Smith; Pete Kremen; Ted
Mischaikov; Henry Bierlink; Tom Anderson; Steve Koch; and maybe
(availability pending committments) Harriet Spanel and a representative of
the Lummi Nation. And you can nibble and sip; all at no charge.
Seven well-known community leaders will be guest speakers for an
exceptionally valuable Public Meeting and Forum, "A Co-Operative Approach
to Manage Local Resources", to be held on Thursday, May 24th, from
7:00-9:30pm at The Bellingham Unitarian Fellowship, 1708 "I" St,
Bellingham, WA. The program is free.
They will address a major challenge for the new millenium -- producing the
goods, protecting the environment, and providing social justice. Everyone
will surely acknowledge that the first is basic, but aren't all three
necessary? Can they all be achieved, at least on our local level? How can
this be done?
The sponsoring organizations are The Social Justice-Social Action Committee
of The Bellingham Unitarian Fellowship, The Community Food Co-Op, KVOS-TV,
and Whatcom Watch.
The Guest Speakers are Brad Smith, Dean of Huxley College of Environmental
Science; Pete Kremen, Whatcom County Executive; Ted Mischaikov,
President, Trillium Corp., Henry Bierlink, Administrator, Whatcom County
Agriculture Preservation Committee, Tom Anderson, Director, Public Utility
District #1, Steve Koch, Secretary-Treasurer of Laborers Local 276, and
(pending end of Legislative Session) Harriet Spanel, Washington State
Senator, 40thLD. The Rev. Douglas Wadkins, B.U.F., will make the
introductions.
Each panelist represents a major part of the local economy, culture and
quality of life. Some of them have signature authority for major decisions
that strongly influence our community. Some are directly involved with
managing our natural resources, some our industrial resources, all are
well-versed in the nature of all the County's resources and needs.
For the first hour, each speaker will present her or his view on
cooperative management of resources. For Q&A after a break, the panel will
be challenged by questions, first from a member of our Social Justice
Committee and a student from the Congregation; then from the audience.
Capacity is limited in the Meeting Hall. No reservations are needed, but
plan to come early if you want to get in. Light refreshments will be
available, courtesy of the Co-Sponsors.
