Just curious how that meeting went a couple of months ago at the health center?

Geeks;
Netscape users have reported that these two pages did not display in
N-scape, but did in Opera and MSIE. I just made some changes, (and I think
the pages are interesting by themselves). If you have a Netscape version
available, please take a look, and let me know the results (and say which
N-scape version).
These are sub-pages to the introduction at

Hi Marian,
The page displays in Netscape, but it isn't pretty. In the Netscape 4.75 and
Netscape Gold 3.01, the images "vedermap.jpg" and "graben.jpg" appear on top of
the rest of the page content. In Netscape 6, PR2, the images span both columns
and appear under the text in the right hand table column. Netscape doesn't know
what to do with image tags containing WIDTH="100%". You should probably stick
with designating the actual sizes of the images.
Good luck,

I'll be there for sure.
Also, I'll try to remember to being my laptop so that we'll have something
to use to browse the web.
One question though...do they have any available phone outlets in the health
center? How about LAN hookups?
I know that they probably don't but it's worth asking anyhow ;)

Once again, I'm inviting fellow Whatcom Webmasters to a get-acquainted
meeting at the Health Support Center, 1212 Indian Street, at 7 pm on
Thursday, Oct. 19.
Your welcome to bring munchies to share, and items of interest. We won't
have a computer to log-on (darn), but it will be a fun time to network the
old fashioned way ... face-to-face. :)

Sounds good. I look forward to meeting everyone on the 19th.

Some of you were interested in meeting sometime, possibly starting a
Whatcom Webmaster Association, or just networking a bit in person. If
you're interested in meeting the evening of Thursday October 12th or 19th,
I could reserve a meeting space at the Health Support Center on Indian
Street (1212 Indian) in Bellingham.
Let me know if that interests you.
Also, if you'd rather have a noon meeting, that could also be possibly
arranged, either in Bellingham or Ferndale.

Marian,
There are certain meta tags which can be inserted that will keep search engine
robots from finding your site.
I believe it's,
<META NAME="robots" CONTENT="NOINDEX">
Note, the NOINDEX keeps robots from adding the current page to its index.
<META NAME="robots" CONTENT="NOFOLLOW">
The NOFOLLOW will keep the robot from following the links on the page and
indexing those pages.
Anyways, that's probably the safest bet in keeping search engines from indexing
your site.
If you really wanted to make things difficult for those visitors who like to
"wonder" the pages of a site, you can always password protect the site or
individual pages.
I know Windows NT, Apache Commanche (Linux), and multiple other web server
applications will allow you to limit user access to certain files and
directories. There are also numerous scripts that are available in both CGI and
ColdFusion which will give you the ability to limit access to areas of the site.
Anyways, hope that helps out a bit.

My Groups | Whatcom_Webmasters Main Page | Start a new group!
I often upload a trial version of a webpage (draft version, tentative
version, whatever term you'd like) to the host server site, into a
subdirectory created for the purpose but without any links from any other
pages. I then tell only those who need to review the item what the exact
address is; something like: url.of.oursite/temp-v2/.
But, is there a way for the casual web-surfer to find it? (short of the
obvious randomly-valid guess). And could a diligent hacker find it using
some tool like ftp?

Marian, I think that the casual web-surfer could find it under certain
circumstances - particularly if one of your clients or friends put a link to
your page on one of their pages - the surf-engine spiders (or robots or
whatever) check your client's page, find the link to your page, and check
out your page - now you're registered with a search engine. I guess it all
depends on what your clients do with the address.

I want to share a web site that someone just brought to my attention:
WebAIM: Web Accessibility in Mind
http://www.webaim.org/
Apparently this is a federally-funded effort to
help folks in postsecondary education create websites that will be
accessible to all individuals. There's a free course that starts
October 2, so it's worth checking out.
Beth Marsau
Hi Beth,
It looks like you have a pretty good start at Whatcom Directory at
http://www.healthsupportcenter.org/whatcom.shtml
Another possibility, to keep from duplicating effort, would be for everyone to
submit their sites to the Open Directory:

Hello fellow Webmasters:
I'm just dusting off the slate here...been occupied with other
matters and not spending as much time with HTML, but would like to
get back with it more...in fact the past few days I've updated some
of the sites I manage.
When I started this list (almost two years ago) I was hoping to help
create a community of webmasters, web designers, people at all levels
of creating web pages and web sites in Whatcom County. I thought
it'd be a great idea if we became better acquainted so that we could
crosslink and also learn from each other.
I'd still like to do that and have a hunch you would too. So perhaps
we can regroup with dialog and see how that can happen. Some of you
wanted to meet, or at least email more frequently. You might also
consider joining the Webring I started, which has recently been moved
to Yahoo.
Some of you have joined Whatcom Webring, and some have attempted to
join, but were bumped off by the system. (Sorry, please try again!)
In order to be included, you'll need to add a code on your webpage--
See: http://www.openaccess.org/~beth/WhatcomWeb.html for information.
Within the past couple years the number and quality of websites have
increased considerably. Wouldn't it be handy to have some kind of
directory of all the websites in Whatcom County? Perhaps that's
something we can work on together.

Rick;
I hope the third message clarified your Q. There was no prior msg, my
query was just too cryptic (which is not my usual long-winded style).
Otherwise, I hope that the data-links found can be useful to somebody else
-- I've already had two responses thanking for the info - that was
immediately useful to them.

Hi Doug,
Sherry, Katie's Mom from Dance class, here.
I have no idea how to solve that. I usually find things that look good to
me and try to add them to my site, or direct them to a friend who has a
similar site. Many people in this county just don't think about the web
much yet. It is getting better in the past five years I've been hanging
out. Just keep reminding the people sending out the letters, info, to
include you on their list of recipients and maybe they'll remember to send
them.

Hi all. Let's see... introductions! I've been webmaster for the Mount
Baker School District for 3 years now - as well as for Christ The Servant
Lutheran Church. I have a bit of a passion for doing this web work - I
think it can, among other things, paint a picture of an organization that
can be positive or negative. My biggest problem seems to be getting the
information from people within these organizations - they send letters to
constituents, they produce information for the staff - but they don't think
to send it my way - the internet is not in their "consciousness" - most
don't seem to think "this ought to be on the web." Do any of you have this
experience? Have any of you solved it?
Thanks - and I look forward to interesting discussions!

Beth,
I understand how hectic schedules can be. Just recently I was so busy I was
only getting a few hours of sleep a night. Then, I took a two week vacation
and came back refreshed and ready to get crackin' on web design projects.
Anyways, July would be great if you would like to meet. Currently, I have a
pretty open schedule now through this summer. The best time for me to meet
is around 6:00 - 7:00 in the afternoon. If anyone has any ideas on where we
should meet please feel free to contact me at wired@... and
I'll see what I can do.
Anyways, take care and I'll talk to you all soon.
