Thought I'd post a message to the Whatcom Webmasters list to kick
off a bit of cyberdust. Someone recently subscribed, which brought
the list back to my attention.

Just to remind you what this list is about ... I created it way back
in 1998 in an effort to unite webmasters in the region of Whatcom
County, Washington State. Hoping to get acquainted so that we can
crosslink pages and also hob-nob. I would say "network" but don't
want to give people the impression that we're connecting computers,
except on the internet.

Anyhow, if you have sites you want to mention or questions/comments
you'd like to post ... if you're getting this email, that's what
it's all about.

Here's the web sites I've been involved with, and I keep telling
myself that I'll eventually upgrade them from just flat html. I'm
still not using any software other than the notepad of my browser.

My own sites:
www.cnw.com/~nwbsbeth
www.whatcomweb.net

Nonprofit projects
www.whatcomnonprofits.org
www.healthsuppportcenter.org
www.bima.com

Please post anything of interest regarding local web sites or issues
that have to do with web development to this list ... or if you're
no longer interested, you may unsubscribe ... just look for the link
on this message and click!

For a user-friendly cyberspace,
Beth

Thanks Ron,
Both. I created that site from scratch and developed it as a volunteer
community service.
Open Access owns the domain and is hosting it for free, and I maintain it.
I also have another discussion list: Whatcom_Nonprofits@yahoogroups.com for
networking.

Beth,

I noticed from your "signature" that you're the webmaster for
whatcomnonprofits.org. Coincidentally, I just discovered that site
yesterday! I'm finding it very useful, because I'm in the process of forming
a nonprofit corporation. Are you responsible for the content of this site,
or just the web design?

Thanks,
Ron

Hi to Everyone, and thanks for the introductions, Ron and Rick.

I started this group about 3 years ago, in hopes that local webmasters would
be better acquainted and learn from each other, plus the community of web
sites could be crosslinked and people surfing Whatcom County online could
find what they are seeking. Back in 1998, I was surprised how few
businesses and community services had web sites. Now there are more, but
it's a jungle.

I also started a Web Ring, with the same name and spirit of bringing
webmasters together---Whatcom Web. Some of you might be aware that the
original webring on webring.com was moved to yahoo, and recently moved
back...so I just migrated it and fixed the link. If you're interested in
joining the webring, make sure you add the navigation info to your page.
http://whatcomweb.net/webring.html

My goals for this year include revisiting my old pages to update the links,
and upgrading my skills so that the sites are more dynamic and
database-driven. My own web work has been in spurts and stops with all the
other events in my life, but I'm hoping to regroup some effort to improve my
own web sites and coordinate ways in which we can build a user-friendly
cybercommunity.

Your comments, suggestions, and exchanges of info are appreciated. Best
wishes for 2002!

Hi,

Just thought I'd take a minute to introduce myself. I was a full-
time web designer for seven years, working on large-scale intranet
(internal) projects for clients such as JPMorganChase, American
Express, John Deere, TimeWarner, and many others. A few months ago
I "retired" from full-time web work in order to pursue teaching and
nonprofit work. I'm now teaching web design online for the
University of Washington. My nonprofit work is related to South
Asia/India--a long-time hobby which is turning into a profession.

My personal sites are:
      http://www.vahana.org
      http://www.princelystates.com

These sites have nothing to do with Whatcom County, except that
they're produced here. However, I'm doing a few small projects for
Continuity Publishing of Bellingham. Here's a link to their old
stuff:

      http://www.newageretailer.com/default.htm

I'll be completely overhauling their websites. I'll post URL's when
I have something new to show.

Thanks for listening. I look forward to getting to know you all.

Cheers,
Ron Rice

Joe,

I like the nav menu on the left side and the use of frames on the site. Also,
the animated snow flakes in the background give a nice seasonal edge to the

Dear Friends,

Spectrum, a community issues group working to connect the government to the
governed, is proud to announce that there will be a forum on "Redefining
Progress", or "The Invisible System That Competes With Progress."

Economic growth competes with the human habitat just as it competes with
the natural habitat. American families receive the same economic treatment
as the natural environment: They are accorded no monetary value and their
loss is not counted as a cost. Despite all the pro-family talk, the family
is treated exactly the same as the ancient forest in the Pacific
Northwest. When the family is damaged or destroyed, we do not consider
that the nation is economically any poorer. Thus families, like forests,
fall victim to one-sided thinking about economic growth. Economic growth
is an inadequate measure of social well-being and for that we need a
"quality of life report." Since World War II, the United States has used
the gross domestic product (GDP) as the barometer of our nation's economic
health. The GDP is simply a gross tally of money spent--goods and services
purchased by households or government and business investments, regardless
of whether they enhance our well-being or not. With this forum, we will
attempt to begin a series of forums in the coming months to redefine
progress using a "human development index" instead of GDP.

Where: The Brigid Collins House, corner of E Holly and N Garden Sts; in the
upper conference room.

When: Tuesday, December 11, 2001 from 7 - 9 PM

Who: Guest speakers are Dan Warner, Professor of Business Legal Studies at
WWU, who will speak on the "Necessity to Move to Sustainable Development"
and Rick Dubrow, owner of A-1 Builders and Adaptations, will give a

System Condition."

How: Panel presentation, followed by a moderated Q&A period.

Spectrum believes that public participation is the foundation of
democracy. Our goal is to engage people in self-government and community
action. We work to create opportunities where people can freely and openly
debate issues, discuss events and obtain information connecting the
governed to government.

Another alternative is Netscape's email client. Although it's slightly more
difficult to use ( depends on who you ask ) you veer away
from the whole Microsoft trojan/worm/virus/ issues that seem to transpire
almost weekly.

As far as disinfecting goes, I either use Mcafee.com's online subscription
service or go to symantec.com and run their free virus cleaning software.
Either way works well.

you might consider switching to another mail-reader. I use "Eudora" and

Hey, thanks, Rick;
That does give me a comfort level.
I've never used any WYSIWYG editor , just used WS_FTP regularly for years
- with the same strong preference for it's simplicity and control by ME,
not some presuming-I'm-an-idiot stuff that M-slush puts on.

I recently changed from notepad to CuteHTML as my html editor, and I do
find it to be very easy to use, adding some neat tricks like
global-search-and-replace across multiple open files, and the
easy-insertion of code-blocks, set up as named-items.

So a few questions:
1) Can the existence of the MS-FPage-Extensions be ignored if they are not
to be used? Will the site with only static pages and images remain fully
functional?

Basically, this situation has too do with transfering the files up to the
server...it shouldn't matter whether you use MS-FP or WS-FTP.
So yes, the existence of the MS-FP extensions can be ignored. You pages that use
the static text and images should come up just fine as long
as you successfully transfer all your sites files up to the server.

Side Note: I personally think WS-FTP is by far better, and more reliable, then
any WYSIWYG editor with built in FTP functionality.
I currently use Dreamweaver 4.0 and the FTP functionality is EXTREMELY buggy. I
usually use WS-FTP for all my transfers. Also,
if you have to set chmod positions for scripts, WS-FTP allows you to do it, most
WYSIWYG editors don't.

2) What's the "FP-recovery" like, if I or someone else later wants to move
over to MS-FPage-Extensions and indeed WS_FTP had messed something up
which has to be fixed? I kinda' understand that the ISP simply
"re-installs" the extensions.

I'm not too familiar with the FP-recovery. You're best bet would be to go to
Microsoft's site and search for help on the subject.

3) Any specific tricks or cautions on the very-first login with WS_FTP?

Nope. WS-FTP is pretty strait forward. I use to to login to both site's using
MS-FP extensions and standard Linux and Unix boxes
and it works just fine.

Hope this helped out a bit.

Best regards,
Rick O'Connor

I have been asked to do a new website, and the site-owner had
MS-FPage-Extensions installed. But I have only used WS_FTP for all my
work, and am not excited about trying to get, install and then learn
MS-FrontPage. The site will be small and uncomplicated, so I know that
WS_FTP will serve.
The standard instructions for MS-FP caution about the hazard of going in
with WS_FTP for uploading - but don't say you cannot. (In fact a
google-search gave me several help-sites which told which things you should
do using WS_FTP.)

So a few questions:
1) Can the existence of the MS-FPage-Extensions be ignored if they are not
to be used? Will the site with only static pages and images remain fully
functional?

2) What's the "FP-recovery" like, if I or someone else later wants to move
over to MS-FPage-Extensions and indeed WS_FTP had messed something up
which has to be fixed? I kinda' understand that the ISP simply
"re-installs" the extensions.

3) Any specific tricks or cautions on the very-first login with WS_FTP?

Whatcom, here's a deal that's hard to beat:

Look who you can hear talk to each other and to you Thursday night at 7:pm,
about Managing Local Resources!! ------ Brad Smith; Pete Kremen; Ted
Mischaikov; Henry Bierlink; Tom Anderson; Steve Koch; and maybe
(availability pending committments) Harriet Spanel and a representative of
the Lummi Nation. And you can nibble and sip; all at no charge.

Seven well-known community leaders will be guest speakers for an
exceptionally valuable Public Meeting and Forum, "A Co-Operative Approach
to Manage Local Resources", to be held on Thursday, May 24th, from
7:00-9:30pm at The Bellingham Unitarian Fellowship, 1708 "I" St,
Bellingham, WA. The program is free.

They will address a major challenge for the new millenium -- producing the
goods, protecting the environment, and providing social justice. Everyone
will surely acknowledge that the first is basic, but aren't all three
necessary? Can they all be achieved, at least on our local level? How can
this be done?

The sponsoring organizations are The Social Justice-Social Action Committee
of The Bellingham Unitarian Fellowship, The Community Food Co-Op, KVOS-TV,
and Whatcom Watch.

The Guest Speakers are Brad Smith, Dean of Huxley College of Environmental
Science; Pete Kremen, Whatcom County Executive; Ted Mischaikov,
President, Trillium Corp., Henry Bierlink, Administrator, Whatcom County
Agriculture Preservation Committee, Tom Anderson, Director, Public Utility
District #1, Steve Koch, Secretary-Treasurer of Laborers Local 276, and
(pending end of Legislative Session) Harriet Spanel, Washington State
Senator, 40thLD. The Rev. Douglas Wadkins, B.U.F., will make the
introductions.

Each panelist represents a major part of the local economy, culture and
quality of life. Some of them have signature authority for major decisions
that strongly influence our community. Some are directly involved with
managing our natural resources, some our industrial resources, all are
well-versed in the nature of all the County's resources and needs.

For the first hour, each speaker will present her or his view on
cooperative management of resources. For Q&A after a break, the panel will
be challenged by questions, first from a member of our Social Justice
Committee and a student from the Congregation; then from the audience.

Capacity is limited in the Meeting Hall. No reservations are needed, but
plan to come early if you want to get in. Light refreshments will be
available, courtesy of the Co-Sponsors.

PROJECTIONS FILM FESTIVAL - YEAR TWO

The Whatcom Film Association, in its efforts to support local and regional
filmmakers, announces the second year of the highly popular Projections
Film Festival. Although still in the planning phase, this year's festival
is expected to be an expanded version of last year's event which will
include a variety of film categories and awards.

The event will be nonjuried with a final round of films being selected for
their artistic merit and going on to the final competition. All film
entries will be viewed at various locations throughout the festival
including the Pickford Cinema. The event will culminate with an awards
ceremony and prizes will be awarded in each category. There will be a
general call for admissions this spring, film related events are being
planned for this summer and the actual festival will be held in early
November.

The Whatcom Film Association anticipates that this festival will continue
to grow into an exciting regional event that will have a greater attendance
from year to year. We would like to encourage your business or organization
to support the festival and we are offering several ways for you to do so.

Please take a moment to fill out the questionnaire below so we can better

Hi -

Just a reminder that the nonprofit career fair is next week in Seattle.
While we've
filled the space with organizations, we could use your help in spreading the
word to individuals looking for job and volunteer opportunities, or those
just interested in checking out some wonderful nonprofit organizations.

In addition to the standard exhibition hall, there will be several panel
discussions designed to dig deeper into working in the nonprofit community.
For example, one of the discussions-the one with the best panelists, I might
add-will be focused on what it's like to work in the environmental
community. If all goes according to plan, we will succeed in recruiting
throngs of supporters, volunteers and staff for the environmental community
of today and for years to come. Well...at least it'll be fun.

It would be great if you could forward the following details to those who
might find the fair to be a valuable experience.

Thanks a bunch and take care,

Clayton Beaudoin

Whatcom_Webmasters was originally started on onelist.com and then
egroups.com bought onelist. Now Yahoo has bought and transferred the
list service to their web site.

How does this affect you? You will still receive emails and can post
to the list. But if you want to access the list web site and your
other egroup lists, you'll need to make a few adjustments ... a
process that will take about 5 minutes.

Go to http://www.egroups.com or http://groups.yahoo.com for
instructions. You will be asked to type in your email and password.
If you don't know your password, they will email you an authorization
code for the next step. You will then type in (or create) your yahoo
email and password. Then all your egroup lists will be converted for
your access to the groups.yahoo.com web site.

If you need to change your email address go to "Account Info" at the
top of Yahoo.com and edit your profile information.

If you have any questions or problems, you can access the Help at the
bottom of the page. Let me know if you need additional assitance.

Just a quick reminder that ONE/Northwest is still actively searching for an
Executive Director. We could use you help in getting the announcement
distributed to a wider pool of potential candidates. The ideal ED will be
someone familiar with the work we do - someone that knows the value of
ONE/Northwest. That's why it's so important for us to engage friends and
colleagues in the search rather than relying solely on advertisements and
recruiters. So I ask that you take a moment to forward the following to
mailing lists or people in your address book that you think might be

issues in Whatcom. Reply to her with items or questions (or to us both),

I have a roster of Whatcom environmental groups at:

Attention all Social Action groups in Whatcom County.

I am part of a group which is putting together a calendar for the year
2001, and would like a list of events your organization, committee or group
have on your calendar this year. Topics include human rights action
events such as conferences, forums, marches, on-going protests, etc, -- the
type of events where people make the difference in numbers, solidarity,
legislation, education concerning children, ethnicity, migrant workers,
gay/lesbian/bi-/transgender, environmental, animal, human rights.

Copies of this calendar will be available to groups so we can support each
other, spread the word and be on the same page.

We would like annual events for WHRTF, WHO, Lummi, Nooksack, Black Action
Network, Bridging Communities, race, Social Justice Committees, Rainbow
Coalition, BESSO, Jobs with Justice, WTO-related events -- you get the idea.

If possible, please email annual calendar events to me at
<swills@...> asap so we can get this put together relatively soon.

Thank you so much for your energys,

Three of us enjoyed meeting and would like to do it again. Sorry you

Seems like Thursday nights was the best time for most people, but
unfortunately I'll be busy most Thursday nights for awhile. If people want

   Geeks;
Netscape users have reported that these two pages did not display in

the pages are interesting by themselves). If you have a Netscape version
