Hi Mitch,

The Robofocus will work right out of the box, don't wait, get one now and never
have to manually focus again.

be interested to hear of any auto-focuser set ups, particularly ones that fit
"out of the box" (I dont want to be doing any modifications!).

Hi Eric,

The flattener has a high quality coating so flaring should not be an issue. The
star pattern in the review appear excellent with no indication of any spacers in
the light path.

that some of the FLT-110 scopes had a problem with the glass spacers needing to
be trimmed, as they protruded into the light cone. Evidently, this caused small
flares on brighter stars.

Andy,
To ensure you get the correct responses to you question you really should be providing a picture.  That way there can be no error as to which screw you are referring to.

Forever clear skies & great seeing!

Hi Daniel,

Dependant on Light pollution I would suggest 3 to 5 min subs at ISO 800 (As many as you can take!)

This was 15 x 3min Subs with my old FLT-98 and EOS 40D.

I would suspect 30 to 40x 3-5min subs would produce a better image still!

(Don’t forget the Darks, Flats!)

I think one of the members said you need to take as many Darks as subs!!

Hi,

My name is Marc, I am a new member of the group.  I have a questoin to ask.  I recently purchased a William Optics 80mm SD.  I was out last night looking at the moon. When I had the focuser on the scope,(William Optics 2" 90 deg: Dielectric) then put a 2" eyepiece  in to the diagonal and was not able to get the Moon into focus all of the way, it was still blured in the eyepiece.  Does anyone know why this is.

Two questions for you:
1) were you able to focus on a star or Jupiter?
2) did you confirm that dew did not form on the eyepiece or the objective lens?
I have a WO Megrez 90 that I use with the supplied WO 2" diagonal and a Tele Vue 10mm Ethos and have no problem focusing.

I was able to focus on a star ok, when I looked at Jupiter, it wasn't quiet clear.  It looked like a bright star- when focusing, it was red and blue colored. When I had it on the Moon, I had the focuser all the way forward and it would not come into focus any more.

I saw some dew on the diagonal and the objective.  I have GSO 2" eyepieces.

This is perplexing.

Try focusing on something during the day with this combination - as close as 35
ft away and see what happens. Try again with something as far away as possible

If you can reach focus, tell us is the focuser racked out all the way, or in all
the way, or somewhere in the middle.

Try the exact same thing with an eyepiece that you could reach focus with that
is a 1.25" eyepiece and see how they compare.

Process of elimination is the only way to see what is going on here, and
daylight is the best time to try this.

Hope this helps.

I was outside today.  I put the WO Diagonal in and used a 20mm 2" GSO EP. When up close(about 35ft)., I was able to focus when having the focuser all the way in.  When I focused on a object far away, I turned the focus knobs in-ward and out-ward, could not get it into focus. I did the same thing with a 1 1/4 diagonal using a 20mm GSO and it worked fine both ways.

Hi Marc,

Ooh - that explains the problem. You see from what you did that the closer the
object you are viewing, the further out you have to rack your focuser. So when
you have it all the way in, for 35 feet, there is no way you can ever reach
focus on the moon, or stars by racking inwards further because you are already
all the way in.

Some eyepieces (particular brands, or focal lengths) do not work in all
refractor/diagonal combinations because of the inherent limitations in the
amount of travel that a refractor focuser must have in order to both achieve
focus for viewing, and not cause vignetting by being too long.

Bummer - I think you are stuck not being able to use this GSO EP with your 2"
diagonal in this scope.

I can say with 100% certainty, that my WO 80II SD, before I APOgraded it and
added the 2" extension, would reach focus with my 2" WO diagonal and my 33mm WO
SWAN eyepiece, so if it's wider views with 2" eyepieces you are after, I would
suggest trying some other brands and focal lengths until you get a match that
doesn't require the level of inward focus you are in need of.

Just on a whim, you have used this 2" GSO on other scopes successfully, right?

Hope it helps,

Timm

I recently purchased a William Optics 80mm SD.  I was out last night looking at
the moon. When I had the focuser on the scope,(William Optics 2" 90 deg:
Dielectric) then put a 2" eyepiece  in to the diagonal and was not able to get
the Moon into focus all of the way, it was still blured in the eyepiece.  Does
anyone know why this is.

Hi everyone,

I have a Flat3, bought 6 months ago and only used once so far with average
results. Bought to use with my Megrez 90.

Can anyone tell me the purpose of the thumb screw on the Flat3? It seems all
unscrewing it allows me to do is rotate device. Is that really all it does? That
seems pointless as it can just be rotated in the focuser draw-tube.

Just trying to understand what/if any adjustments the Flat3 has to aid in
getting good results from it.

Thanks,
Roger.

Hello,
I owned for several years a WO Megrez II APO, and was very happy about it. Now
I'm considering the purchase of a WO FLT 132. Browsing the net, I found some
contrasting comments about the optical performances of its lenses (sometimes
disappointing, at least, according to some tests performed in Germany, e.g. see
some posts on CN) and about the quality of its focuser (slipping). Do you know
if the WO has finally solved this issues? Any additional feedback from further
FLP 132 owners, lately? Thanks!

I just purchased a Swan 83 spotting scope (to add to my FLT110, ZS80, WO
EPs,
binoviewer, flatteners, etc.)

All other scopes have a blank background, ie all one sees is the image
being viewed.

This one however has what looks just like a star field spread evenly
over the field of view.
It looks like very small white bubbles distributed evenly on a dark
background.

They are visible when observing, and very obvious when moving
the eye so the image moves out of the way leaving the dark background.

It doesn't appear to be on the objective or EP external surfaces, which
I have gently cleaned.
The spots are decrease in visibility when zooming in.

My supplier showed me another of the same model, which has the same 'issue'.
It impacts on normal usage as the spots are always visible - so this is
really a puzzle.

Hi,
Similarly I have just moved from an 80mm WO to a 132mm. I use it for
astrophotography, with an SBIG ST and focal reducer/flattner on board, so a
reasonably heavy load. I was initially dismayed by the slippage of the focuser
and skew, causing out of collimation. However, by increasing the tension on the
focuser, both these seem to have been cured. Optics seem fine, although I am no
expert; field is very flat (with the reducer/flattner in place).
Regards,
Mitch

Hey Mitch,

The stock focuser on the WO scopes, from the ZS66SD on up, is, arguably, its weakest link in AP use.

Did you ever get a solution to fitting the TRF2008 on the ZS66 and gettitng

WO recommends the FLAT2, not the FLAT3, for the ZS66SD.

That's what I'm using on my 66 - works quite well.  Have a nice image of the Rosette Nebula using that combo.  See:      http://tinyurl.com/dyrzlq

Thats a great picture!

I already have the TRF2008 so am trying to get that working. I only wanted to
use the ZS66 this time to get the whole of the Veil.

My normal imaging scope is the Megrez 90

Thought you might want to take a look at the image that I captured last night
using my WO ZS-66ED refractor with a Meade DSI II color camera. There are 50
exposures at 300 seconds making it a 4.16 hours exposure. Camera control,
capture and preprocessing was with Nebulosity v2.1.2 and the StarShoot
autoguider using PHD. Image post processing was MS Picture It! v7. It is in Bill
Logan's images in the photo section or you can click this link:

Comment welcome. Thanks for looking.

Any of our members purchased a WO telescopes or accessories in the last 6 mos. -
more importantly, import to the US? Is this possible or unrealistic with

Diane,

A couple of weeks ago I ordered a new 1.25 Dielectric Diagonal through the
William Optics website. They were on sale for $69.00 (including shipping). I
placed the order on a Friday Evening 7/31, recieved a confirmation e-mail within
a few minutes after ordering. On the following Tuesday 8/4/2009, I received
another e-mail informing me that it was shipped. In addition the e-mail
included the name of the carrier and the tracking number. I then Checked the
Carrier's website and I confirmed the order was shipped. I then received the new
diagonal on Thursday 8/6/2009.

Remember that Taiwan is on the other side of the International date line.

In my book this was great service for such a low cost Item. I have come to
trust WO's quality products. I have one of their Scopes (80mm Super APO) and
quite a few of their accessories. The new Diagonal was far less expensive than
similar products available here in the US. Which in turn are probably made in
Asia anyway.

I hope this helps,

Jeff

Hi all

I heard from a UK dealer yesterday that the Zenithstar 66SD has been
discontinued, and that once the stocks have been depleted, the ZS 70
will also discontinued.

I am not sure I heard this mentioned on this list, am sure it would have
been talked about at length, so I thought I would post it up and see if
this was commonly known or not, or if the information filtering through
to the dealers is incorrect.

If someone wants a refractor in that size, Stellarvue continues to market their excellent SV70ED, 70 mm f6, with a dual-speed focuser, which replaced my original Megrez 80/6, and they should within the next week or so also have available a carbon fiber tube version, the SVR70ED Raptor. I have this scope in its original aluminum tube version.  Stellarvue also has pending availability on an SVR80ED, same aperture as my original Megrez, 80 mm, slightly longer f-ratio, at F7.  It should end up at about the same weight as the original aluminum tube SV70ED, maybe 5 lbs., i.e., about 1.5 lbs. lighter than the Megrez I had, which has been sold to a friend of mine.

Too bad that Williams has had to abandon its States-based distribution.

I have found that dealers are not the best source of information sometimes. I'll
defer to William Optics for the confirmation. Anyway, thank you Steve for the
