I always use KDE, specifically for KBibTeX and Kile. There is nothing that I use that exclusively requires Gnome. Have you had a look to see if you really need

Yes, Emacs is great. A little bit too-much for me, though. I couldn't get used to the multiple-keys shortcuts.

@ Max, I never got the spelling corrector working in Kile (on Gnome). I found a forum thread discussing that issue, and they said you only could do spell

Kile is great, but you need to work with the KDE desktop (or install all the KDE libraries needed for that---and even then it doesn't work well in Gnome). ...
