Ultimate!
The WinHlp32.exe program is not of interest with respect to the original
question concerning reading chm files. According to MS the WinHlp32.exe is
for reading hlp files. I opened WinHlp32.exe and directed it to the c:\I386
folder where there are numerous chm and hlp files. The only files it
recognized as help files were hlp files.
It appears to me that hh.exe remains as the only MS provided program for
reading chm files. However, as there are warnings on the web, one must be
cautious of the source of any chm file before opening it. I don't purposely
download any chm files from the web and need hh.exe just for the help files
provided as a part of the XP installation.
I did a search of all chm files on my system and of the more than two
hundred that were found only about 20 were from non-Microsoft products. And
those 20 were associated with well known programs. None of them were
downloaded as a separate file from the web.
