I have a problem with my computer. I am running XP home ww/SP3, IE6. I ckecked
in on updates about 2 weeks ago and started downloading IE8 without realizing
that I didn't want it (probably taking a nap) after so many people had problems
with it. I tried to find a way to stop the download and couldn't so I just
pulled the plug.

It started then giving me problems such as not sending email, not letting me
recieve email on outhouse express, then it would not let me on the net and
finally rearranged my desktop and froze it so I can't change it.

I then decided to reformat it but it now says it can't vind a SATA device. As I
boot up it tells me the same thing but it comes up to the desk top and lets me
play the games that are installed.

Amy ideas? Hard drive, mother board? It has a WD 80 GB hard drive that was
almost 50% full.

I am using my wifes computer so I probably won't be able to answer rightaway.

Thanks,
Lynn T.

You do not need a programmable mouse Louise. I sent an instruction to put
things in the right click menu but you most have missed it. Here is the link
to one on the web.

Actually have a program to change over the save mail files to convert them.
What I was trying to find was a way to add to the mouse menu to use save as
on the right mouse button rather than quick launch or F12. But unless I
bought a programmable mouse, seems this cannot be done.

So will have to deal with it as is for now.

Thanks though for the link as someone might need it. I am not good in DOS
either so I had bought a program to convert them over for me. That part of
sorting files will be done over time (though know it would convert them all
over in one shot, but then not sorted into all the folders they should be in
so time consuming to do each folder individually and not need to do each
individual file though at a time.

Hi Louise,

As I understand it, you want to separate emails from
Lookout :) Express into individual text files.

If that's the case, I would recommend this freeware...
http://freenet-homepage.de/ukrebs/english/dbxconv.html

It will quickly go thru your *.DBX files and convert them to
individual text (*.EML) files that can be read by any simple
text editor or by Outlook itself. Each email is given the name
of the SubjectLine.EML and each *.DBX file is put in it's
own sub-folder. ie: INBOX.DBX or SENT.DBX, etc.

It's to be run in a DOS window and a little DOS knowledge
would be favorable but not absolutely required.

I need to copy all of the contacts from one sim card to another sim card -
I know you can copy to phone and then to sim card, but the capacity of the
sim card is 250 and the phone only holds 100.

Has anyone found a quick way of doing this please ? Perhaps using the PC
somehow ?

Any help appreciated.

I suspect something has changed in your bios, telling it you have a sata
drive when in fact you do not. Hit f2 or Del (depends on your PC model)
at boot and see what needs to be fixed there.

As to the IE8 update, I guess you know now, you NEVER interupt an update
in progress. You failed to mention which IE version you had before the
update. I always tell it to not do, and hide the IE8 update and then on
the next check it offers to upgrade to IE7, this i do and then do IE8
only after I have SP3 in place.

If your internet has been disabled and everything freezes you may have
to swallow hard, backup your data in safe mode (if it will let you) and
format and reinstall XP.

BTW I read an article on Network World today that a hack had been posted
that allows someone to take control of a PC running ANYTHING other than
IE8. MS has not issued a response yet, so lets hope they push a patch to
fix it before these guys take over.

What makes the file double in size though from one computer to the other?
And not make all the exported mail (the whole personal folder small?

Still the backup program is now not working and I have to export all the
mail now to save it.

I will though file some of the mail as separate pst folders, still why does
the pst folder not get smaller when email is deleted?

This is especially important with this huge 4G one I suspect is causing the
program to fail in backing up?

Louise,

Another method you could try is to just create a folder to drag and drop
your messages to. Then use the export feature and export
that folder to another pst file. After doing that merely delete the folder
and contents. The exported pst file(s) can be opened and
closed when you need them. When you open one of them, you can drag-n-drop
new messages into to it and close it when you are done.
Outlook can handle multiple PST files.

To open a second PST in Outlook 2003, you go to the file menu, select
'Open>Outlook Data File' and browse to the PST file you
created. To close it just right click on it in the folder view and select
close.

Be aware though that deleting messages does not decrease the size of the PST
file as you are thinking. That is done in 'Data File
Management> Settings'. You should find a 'Compact Now' button to click.
This only works on the main PST file though. All the other
PST files can be compacted with the "SCANPST" utility that comes with
Office. While it is a "hidden" repair tool, it basically does
the same thing in it process.

To make individual message easier to find, you can open the message and go
to the edit menu and select edit the message. Then you
can modify the Message subject and/or put notes in the message. You can also
create sub folders in your PST file with categories to
put certain messages in certain folders. By doing all this, even the lousy
Outlook search tool can find messages you are looking
for.

A couple of thoughts:

-Are you using the Pfbackup tool available from Microsoft? Is that what is
giving you troubles? That can be a bugger to install.

-With deleted files you can delete them from folders, but are you emptying
the deleted items folder?

-Are you archiving Sent Items? There can be any number of messages there too
that will add to the size of your pst.

-4gb is not too large a file to be backed up by the pfbackup tool.

Louise,

Look at the destination of tha backup and make sure there is adequate space to
backup to. I have seen many computers where users are
using the Windows Backup and it is trying to backup to the recovery partition.
The recovery partition is unsuitable for that partly
because of the size of the partition. You need to have it go to either a USB
memory stick, a external usb hard drive, or a
completely separate internal hard drive.

Typically, the recovery partition, is PHYSICALLY part of the C: drive and is
called the D: drive. If the C: drive physically
dies...so does the backup.

Loise,

The data structure of a PST file is similar to a database file. Typically they
grow as data is added but do not shrink when data is
removed to help ensure the integrity of the existing data. This is also the way
Windows handles the Windows registry. Automatic
compaction would be a disaster waiting to happen in all cases.

If you run the "Compact Now" in Data File Management, you will notice that
Outlook will not let you do anything else until it has
finished. It is also advised that when you do this, you disable the automatic
send/recieve temporarily first. You might also wnt to
delete all the sent items and empty the deleted message bucket to maximize the
compaction.

Outlook also has an Export feature you can use to export your PS fileto another
PST file asa form of backup.

Cissie -- couple of options. One is to do a google search for a commercial place
that does this type of work and get a quote (you will have to count the # of
transparencies you have). You could also check the local yellow pages.

Two is to purchase a scanner capable of scanning transparencies and then do
some digital image adjusting if you wish and then burn to CD/DVD yourself.
Depending upon the # of transparencies involved, the second option may be the
cheaper but of course it is more time consuming.

Cissie, almost all photo stores in the US offer this service. They will copy
them to photos and put them on a CD or DVD if you ask. One call also do it all

scanners themselves are relatively inexpensive. I know that HP offers scanners
that have a built in slide adapter. I'm also an ex Marine and a combat friend
of mine sent me his slides and I took them to a local photo store and they
converted them all to photos for me. I also could have had them put them all on
a CD but my friend wanted only the photos. You should have no trouble finding a
local photo store that offers this service. With digital photography taking
away a large portion of their business, they have almost all expanded their
services for any type of business they can get.

Actually have a program to change over the save mail files to convert them.
What I was trying to find was a way to add to the mouse menu to use save as
on the right mouse button rather than quick launch or F12. But unless I

So will have to deal with it as is for now.

Thanks though for the link as someone might need it. I am not good in DOS

sorting files will be done over time (though know it would convert them all
over in one shot, but then not sorted into all the folders they should be in
so time consuming to do each folder individually and not need to do each
individual file though at a time.

It's to be run in a DOS window and a little DOS knowledge
would be favorable but not absolutely required.

something is wrong.

If the file can not be shrunk and it is at do I have to uninstall and import

address book and import it after.

Just downloaded info on doing that so I can follow step by step, incase I
selected the wrong selection and that is why it doubled in size?

Louise,

Look at the destination of tha backup and make sure there is adequate space
to backup to. I have seen many computers where users are
using the Windows Backup and it is trying to backup to the recovery
partition.

All the other PST files can be
compacted with the "SCANPST" utility that comes with
Office. While it is a "hidden" repair tool, it basically does the same thing
in it process.

To make individual message easier to find, you can open the message and go
to the edit menu and select edit the message. Then you
can modify the Message subject and/or put notes in the message. You can also
create sub folders in your PST file with categories to
put certain messages in certain folders. By doing all this, even the lousy
Outlook search tool can find messages you are looking
for.

Cissie,

You can do it by yourself anywhere in the world
http://www.nextag.com/35mm-slide-scanner/compare-html

The first step is scanning into the computer or to a memory stick.

Of course most camera shops that do film processing could likely handle the

Cissie I would not trust these to just anyone, and if you do, it wont be
cheap.

Why not buy a scanner that has a slide adaptor, I have a HP Scanjet 4850
that I purchased about 3 years ago from Office Depot for a little over
$100.

It works great! there is a setting for color slides as well as a setting
for negatives, then it will produce a picture to whatever quality you
desire. I am sure HP as well as other mgfrs have comparable scanners
for SP, Vista and Windows7

The link you sent explains how to add something to the right-click menu of
the SYSTEM, which is not the same thing as the right-click menu inside
Outlook itself, which is what Louise wants. You CAN NOT customize the
right-click menu of Outlook itself. Maybe a programmable mouse would be able
to do this via a sort of "macro" that the mouse would create to
automatically do the clicks that Louise now does manually... but for the
life of me I don't see the big difference in a right-click/selecting the
task she wants and pressing F12. Your mouse hand is on your mouse as it is;
your other hand is free. Why is it so hard to hit the F12 key with the other
hand? It's not really hard... it's just not what you want to do. OK... but
sadly we cannot always do what we want to do. This is such an instance.

I think you're looking for a USB sim card reader (or sim card manager).
Never used one but it looks like you can use this to back up your contacts
to a computer then transfer them to another sim card. Have a look on Google.

Your reference to file size seems to indicate either you're running an older
version of the *.pst or you're unaware the file size limitation of the older
style *.pst's have been changed. File sizes of up to about 20gb are now
allowable.

Subject: RE: [WinTips-Tricks] did find I could use F12 though

Outlook search tool can find messages you are looking
for.

I have one of these that I bought from Walmart( ~$99). It can work but there are
a unbelievable number of ways for it to frustrate you, mostly software problems
like exposure problems, negative/slide alignment, dust and scratches, …. On
the other hand, I have never been happy with slide adapters for a larger scanner
either. By doing it your self, you are in control of the result but I suspect
you have to spend ~$400 to get a good scanner.

Hi Vincent;

Thanks for the info about the larger pst files.

The problem is on the new laptop and using Outlook 2007 and downloaded the
latest outlook backup program and I was told it might be the file is too
large on another list, but since that is not the case there is another
reason the back up program is not working.

Have uninstalled the back up program and will re-install it now to see if
this clears this problem up. Nice to know it is not the larger file size,
though strange it jumped from under 2G to 4 G when I imported the file.

Your reference to file size seems to indicate either you're running an older
version of the *.pst or you're unaware the file size limitation of the older
style *.pst's have been changed. File sizes of up to about 20gb are now
allowable.

Hi Carabalda;

Thanks, guess I have to use F12 then. It is strange though that in Outlook
one gets the Save As in the saving attachments menu but one looses that when
one clicks on the email and use the right mouse button. Guess it is just
not the way I would have designed it. Guess I will just adapt to using F12.

thanks

The link you sent explains how to add something to the right-click menu of
the SYSTEM, which is not the same thing as the right-click menu inside
Outlook itself, which is what Louise wants. You CAN NOT customize the
right-click menu of Outlook itself. Maybe a programmable mouse would be able
to do this via a sort of "macro" that the mouse would create to
automatically do the clicks that Louise now does manually... but for the
life of me I don't see the big difference in a right-click/selecting the
task she wants and pressing F12. Your mouse hand is on your mouse as it is;
your other hand is free. Why is it so hard to hit the F12 key with the other
hand? It's not really hard... it's just not what you want to do. OK... but
sadly we cannot always do what we want to do. This is such an instance.

You do not need a programmable mouse Louise. I sent an instruction to put
things in the right click menu but you most have missed it. Here is the link
to one on the web.

Louise, Click on File, data file management, then double click on your
default file.

Does it say Personal Folders File (97-2002) or something like that, or just
Personal Folders File.

If just Personal Folders File, it isn't limited to 2GB
