The NetBook I am seriously considering purchasing does not have a CD
/ DVD drive. It does have wireless access, though.

Would it be possible and legal to map the CD drive on my desk top so
I can install a favorite program of mine on the NetBook via the
network? The sales rep sales it is legal, but he is selling the
NetBook. I like to have an 'honest' response please.

Thanks.

Robert

Thanks for the generous and well written explanation, which includes
some little-known unusually important information. The bit about shutting off
the modem/router is brilliant, never thought of it.
Well I'll be printing this up and studying it, such info doesn't go
easily into my type of mind...Thanks, Olivia

This seems to indicate that Windows Defender was the forerunner of MSE.
Installing MSE will disable Defender, because only one such progam
should be running resident protection at a time. MSE does everything
that Defender did BUT much more now.

I am not sure if the arrangement you have now is adequate or not, only
time will tell I guess.

Last night I was presented with the dreaded Trojan/Virus screen once
again, MSE Immediately stopped it in its tracks , notified me there was
an infection and promted me for permission to clean the PC, but it
appeared the PC was locked up, BUT Task Manager still worked and I was
able to end and close everything and then restart the PC. When it
booted back up, everything was fine. I check MSE history log and it
showed the file was deleted.

I can't believe I'm praising Microsoft.

information they get on their sites. So it's easy for their spammers to
steal info. like our email addresses. They just "Follow" the list.
The way that I downloaded my Security "Tools" phony software

Micheal we must warn that a restore will not remove anything already there.
It will just be safe in the protected restore files.

Also Olivia should be advised that it is best not to run two major
protection programs together.

Windows Defender has been dropped from Windows 7 and I am glad because it
was not an efficient protectors but did interfere with the running of your
computer.

Olivia,

Over the last several months I have been removing similar virus problems
remotely. Most of the people have more than adequate
malware protection...some not. Regardless of the level of protection you
have, none of the security packages have the ability to
prevent you from either doing something stupid, or reacting incorectly when
you suspect something is wrong.

One thing that seems to be common is that many of the users would inocently
be surfing and get a pop-up message claiming you have
several infections. In the time you are scratching your head saying WTF and
asking why your defenses let you down, programs are
being seeded on your pc and possibly even the registry being modified. Not
all people have clicked on the window for the "free
scan".

This leads me to believe that the website they all went to was possibly
compromised by a hacker, and is using the same mechanism
that allows a website to display locally. Temporary Internet files are files
downloaded to your pc and then your page is displayed.
Your defenses are trained to allow this...and wouldn't know if one of the
files it was downloading was infected.

The download file(s) could lay dormant or call home to download additional
files once it is activated. There is no rule of thumb to
follow as to what they do or when they do it.

The best defense starts by keeping all your security updated as an infected
machine may not update and/or your security software may
be disabled. Then instead of scratching your head and saying WTF, as quickly
as you can pull the power out of your router or
dsl/cable modem and leave it out. The purpose of this is to stop further
communication by the threat to the mothership. Next run a
system restore and then run full scans following the reboot. In exteme
circumtances, press and hold the power button.

If you connect to the Internet wirelessly, you may need to turn off the
wireless adapter with the switch, or if you are using
ethernet...remove the ethernet cable. Do what ever it takes to prevent an
Internet connection when the system is rebooted for
cleaning. Scanning is safemode is another trick I use.

The key is reacting quickly, reacting properly, and taking the time to do
some advance planning of the steps to follow when it
happens.

Michael

I don't want to start a debate here, as Norton versus anything else becomes the
"Chevy versus Ford" sort of thing. Having said that, you should look around at a
few other antivirus programs if you insist on a paid program. I've been using
the free Avast AV program for years now and have visited places not for the weak
of heart, and Avast has always kept me protected. Anyway, back to the paid
programs: there is a pretty good article at

Thanks Michael, Bill, Garry et al!
This time, upon reading and considering your suggestions, I felt so helpless
and rushed--this time it was all over my head...so that I asked my neighbor (who
is a computer repairman.) He told me to bring it over, and amazingly, he fixed
it in a very short time....but didn't have time to tell me how he did it! (He is
the one who had suggested the free AVG last time.) So this time, after the high
bill last time, he did not charge me.
So, it's a mystery just what he did. And I feel grateful to you all, and to
him.
( Plus, he suggested that if I go to websites from China, maybe I better get
Norton Internet, the top of the line model.)
Thanks all for your attention and suggestions!
   best, Olivia

   Olivia,

Sounds like you have a rootkit that was intalled also. The best way to handle
that is to have the hard drive removed and connected
to another machine that can clean it. If by chance it doesn't shutdown in
safemode...then there are other options. You are welcome
to contact me offline or call to discuss the problem.

Tools"

What to do with crippling fake "Security Tools" phony program invaded my
laptop and shut it down to Safe Mode.
Here is the history of how I got there:
I went to look at a very short video, the subject of which I had googled, at
"FreeChinaOnline", a website I read was
started by AliBaba, a HUGE NEW Corporate trade website out of China.
The AVG gave it the site a green okay check. The black "video box" came up,
and It asked me to download it; I did.
POOF! I had downloaded a FAKE program "Security Tools", which makes believe my
computer is infected and
wants me to do something which I learned will delete my files.
I kept ignoring it's pop-ups, and reading up on how to get rid of it.
Finally my new laptop (I am currently borrowing a PC), went into SAFE MODE,
and by now it keeps shutting off altogether.
Another weird thing is that in Safe Mode, Microsoft is supposedly telling me
that it sees "new hardware
device" for me to click on something so that it can add the device. I don't
trust that, will not click, there is no "new
device"...ONLY THE DARN "Security Tools" FakeWare. "SECURITY TOOLS" even is
listed by name, with a long number, in the SAFE list
of all programs at the start menu!.
What should I do? I have AVG FREE version... I just got rid of the expired
2-month gift of the free Norton that came with
   my laptop.
   Any suggestions?
WHAT should I do NEXT? Thanks, as always, 0livia in Pittsburgh
(Yup, I know, one of you suggested I get something else instead of AVG, sorry
I didn't listen. AVG is what my neighbor, a computer
repair guy, uses on his own computer.)

Got a similar virus and it damaged the registry and could not use the
restore function as you say. Had to re-install XP. Ran Kaspersky in safe
more using rescue disc to get rid of the virus but could not repair the
registry and it affected my Outlook program and a few other programs not
enough to shut them down but made them unusable (rules would not stay,
address books gone) so eventually had to do a full re-install.

The one I had fooled me with a false error message and I clicked on it and
that is when problems started. Not sure how the false error message got
into the computer to then allow the virus to be triggered.

If it has progressed to the point of not being able to boot normally to
your desktop, I am afraid you need to back up all your important files
to an external media and prepare to do a format and reinstall of your
Operating System.

I received a PC yesterday with this newly named Trojan/Virus to clean.
For the first time it seems to be putting a file (an exe file) in My
Documents to help spread itself, so you will need to scan your backed up
files before putting back on your cleaned PC.

As to what to put back on your PC when you have it fixed, I have tried
Microsoft Security Essentials and it stopped this same trojan twice on
this PC. When the original Trojan box appeared wanting me to click on
it so it could fix my PC, at the same time Microsoft Security Essentials
grabbed it and asked me to click to fix the infection, I did and several
seconds later it prompted me to restart the PC, I did and when i booted
back up, the threat was gone.

If you had merely restarted your PC when i first appeared and not
touched it, not even the red X or to move it, its possible it would not
have been there when you booted back up.

This trojan also infects the System Restore points on your PC, so that
route is also useless as a tool.

Thanks for your generous offer! Funny, "rootkit" was the only thing the "free
version" of AVG did not cover. Olivia

Thanks Michael, Bill, Garry et al!
This time, upon reading and considering your suggestions, I felt so
helpless and rushed--this time it was all over my head...so that I asked my
neighbor (who is a computer repairman.) He told me to bring it over, and
amazingly, he fixed it in a very short time....but didn't have time to tell me
how he did it! (He is the one who had suggested the free AVG last time.) So
this time, after the high bill last time, he did not charge me.
So, it's a mystery just what he did. And I feel grateful to
you all, and to him.

Thanks for the suggestions on the battery meter. It usually shows all the time.
I did find it under the Taskbar and Start Menu
Properties "Notification Area" but it was unchecked under "Power" and that line
was shadowed so I could not do anything with it. I
started to check online for solutions and tried this solution
"So, go to Control Panel>>System>>Advanced>>Performance settings. Select the
"data execution prevention" tab and select the second
option "turn on dep for all programs and services except those I select". Then
click on add and browse to and select the
powercfg.exe file (found in Windows\System32). Add this, save it down, restart
and hey presto!!"
It worked. I am not knowledgable enough to know exactly what I did or if I
screwed up something else but I do have the power meter
back again.

Hi Garry, Bill and Michael and All:
Wow! From reading the Micosoft website, while considering downloading
Microsoft Security Essentials there, I read that in Vista I already have
"Windows Defender"! It is "protection against malicious and unwanted software",
it says! So I looked, and it's right there, and it was not even turned on!
So I just turned it on.
Now I'm thinking that WOULD HAVE stopped the "Security Tools" had it been on.
Is that so?
Plus, I think that with Both AVG free, plus the Windows Defender, I
believe I'm all set. Don't need Norton....Is that so? Agree?

I got this tip in my mail today and wondered if it is worth bothering about
and if it actually works.

Alex

Private Browsing

I got a request for this tip from a reader who's just starting their holiday
shopping. We like to do a lot of our shopping on the Internet, but did you
ever suspect someone going into your browsing history to sneak a peek at the
sites you've gone to? What a way to ruin a surprise, right?

Here's what you can do to thwart these sneaky spies of holiday gift giving.

In Internet Explorer 8:

It's called “InPrivate Browsing” and what it does is keep all of your
history in one private session that is deleted directly after you're done.
Just press Ctrl+Shift+P and then shop, browse and scheme all you want! When
you're done, your tracks are covered!

In Firefox 3.5:

The same key combination (Ctrl+Shift+P) works exactly the same in Firefox 3
5, too! The added cool part about Firefox's private method is that when you
re done all the tabs you had open when you went private are restored!

There you go! Two similar methods for Internet anonymity for two different
browsers! Cloak and Dagger lives on via the Internet!

Hi,

My Emachines laptop: I put it to sleep, woke up, opened it, but it was all the
way off?
So  I started it up,  but it got messy during the boot sequence. The  hdd is 3rd
in the boot seq., it seemed to ignore it, then hang on dhcp, eventually
resulting in the message
"No Operating System found", all still on the boot (black) screen. You can get
no further.

Any ideas? Using Win XP SP3, IE7. No recent program installations, just ran full
system scan with good results. Seems like it might be a virus, if anything in
the boot sector of the hd was messed with it could result in the above effects?
Any help much appreciated,

John N.
