If it refuses to boot then you need the Restore CDs or a Win7 DVD.

Subject: [WinTips-Tricks] Toshiba Update for Bios

My daughters Toshiba laptop model L765D-S7049 with win7 got a prompt for a
Toshiba update concerning Bios, she clicked ok and it restarted now NOTHING.

Nothing flashes on screen, the power light comes on, the charger light and
the battery charging light, a brief flash of the hard drive light then
nothing else.

No output to external monitor either.

I downloaded the iso for the bios update from them and when started with it
in the tray it seems to access the cd, but with nothing showing on screen
there is noway to tell it to proceed as the instructions say.

Any suggestions, it is out of warranty.

I am thinking you may have installed an incorrect bios, not really sure, Bios
are very tricky and should not be attempted to be installed unless one is
absolutely certain it is the correct one. I know, because I have done this
myself, here may be some useful info, not sure, but attempt with caution...

1.
Disconnect the computer from any electrical source and remove the computer's
side access panel. This may require the removal of one or more thumbscrews from
the rear face of the computer case.

2.
Locate the BIOS battery on the motherboard. This battery is most often located
in the lower-right portion of the motherboard. However, motherboard design
varies among manufacturers. This battery will be a solitary, circular, flat,
"button" type battery.

3.
Remove the BIOS battery by gripping its sides and lifting away from the
motherboard. If the battery does not allow for removal with your fingertips, use
a screwdriver to gently pry it out of its housing.

4.
Press the computer's power button to expend any stored electrical charge. This
ensures that no charge is left to hold the BIOS setting inside the CMOS chip
itself.

5.
Replace the BIOS battery.

It's a laptop!

News update on this repair, the Toshiba Service center got in the new
motherboard, ran a few diagnostics to see if everything was working ok, rebooted
and BAM it happened again. They are to contact Toshiba again tomorrow to see
what else they want to try. I would suggest another motherboard and have
Toshiba remove the troublesome Bios update from thier website as well as the
Toshiba Update Software on the Laptop.

There is no telling how many laptops this will ultimately affect.

Hi,

You can use External Hard Drives of-course. It will save your photos and videos
when your system corrupts. However, you can try Online Backup Services for your
photos and videos. Just Google and you will find many free services for backup.

Read it for your reference:

I never would use online storage in favour of an external hard drive or
large memory pen.

What is the site is down or just packs up as many do.

Over time, I've accumulated a number of hard drives, and have a total of five
externals connected (you can never have enough storage). My best solution is
having a twin drive dock that lets me hot-swap drives. I use the first drive in
the dock for general storage of everything that can be considered data:
documents, pictures, videos, email, even saved game states. The second slot in
the dock is for a backup drive. I can hotswap drives so that I have two or more
backups at any given time. Even if my main drive crashes, all I have to do is
restore the system, reload the software and I haven't lost any data. Even if
the external fails, I only lose at most a week's woth of stuff, assuming my
backup schedule is up to date.

I use an EZ-Dock 2, which has been reliable for three years. My only
dissatisfaction with it is that it cannot accept drives larger than 1.5 Tb, but
it can be set to treat the two drives as a single device. My total external
storage is 5.5 Tb.

I have 2 desktops running win xp. I like it because old stuff works on it. Now
my problem is this. The HP has a 1tb drive, the acer has an 80 mg drive. They
are both sata, but when I switched out drives. it would not boot in the acer(
the hard drive taken out of HP) the acer has more usb & reader ports. It kept
trying to find drivers etc. Now they are both partitioned for reboot/format, but
I don't want to lose info on either. so How do I get the drives switched out. I
have a back up drive that has em both on it, but it would not load drivers from
BU drive? can I use a thumb drive & just copy partitioned section for both to
get em running & NOT lose data????? neither came with boot disks, but I do have
my OLD xp HP boot disks.
at the same time my toshiba took a sh** & it won't bood say FD error,It is
going to computer repair, I can't handle 3........

Sue, In order to swap drives, you would need to do an XP repair if the new drive
did not boot, and reactivate the XP

If the only problem is drivers, copying them before to a USB drive should fix it
- at least the network adapter driver(s) so you can access the manufacturer's
driver site.

Good luck, Mark

Well, in the simplest terms, what you're doing is not possible. Not
without a third drive equal to or larger than your largest drive. To
effectively make the swap, what you would need to do is create an image
of each drive on the third drive and then transfer those images to the
other drive so that the drive from the HP now had the image of the Acer
and the Acer drive had the image of the HP. Then install the drives and
things should boot normally.

A much easier solution would be to just get another drive for the Acer.
Newegg has 1-2TB drives for less than $100 and my local Microcenter
has a Seagate 1.5TB drive for $70.

And every drive maker I know of has software to transfer the drive image
from your old drive to the new one. So all you'd have to work with is
the Acer and the HP could remain as it was.

Each operating system when loaded a computer is tied to that computer by
various hardware identities. If you try to put it in another computer
(by definition one with different hardware) it will not find what it
expects on boot up and will either fail or cause major headaches.

You can't use the backups for drivers - you need to download and install them.

And you will probably need to repair the XP to get it to boot and activate with
the product code in the PC as I said in my first post. (I replace drives every
day...)

reboot/format, but I don't want to lose info on either. so How do I get the
drives switched out. I have a back up drive that has em both on it, but it would
not load drivers from BU drive? can I use a thumb drive & just copy partitioned
section for both to get em running & NOT lose data????? neither came with boot
disks, but I do have my OLD xp HP boot disks.

First I would run checkdisk with repair system files on each.

I would use two extra drives (not being used, no matter if empty or not) which
is big enough to hold what is on the drives (they do not have to be the same
size just big enough to hold what is on the original drives. Call these the
temporary transfer drives.

Then download the imaging software from the manf. of the drive to be copied to
or from. Then install the transfer drives in the systems to be copied as the
second drives, boot up and run the imaging software and copy the original drive
to the transfer drive (with overwriting partions) , then shut down and swap the
drives, removing the original drives. They should then boot normally using the
transfer drives.

Then place the original drives in the desired PC as the second drive, again run
the imaging sofware and overwrite partitions and copy "image" the drive, shut
down swap the drives, remove the transfer drive and boot normally.

You can't use the backups for drivers - you need to download and install them.

And you will probably need to repair the XP to get it to boot and activate
with the product code in the PC as I said in my first post. (I replace drives
every day...)

I'm getting lost!

What product key does the HP have on it? Vista?

And what OS does the drive you want to put in it have? XP?

You could put the XP drive in the HP, but you would need to upgrade it to Vista
and use the HP key

sorry to confuse HP was a XP only machine with 1 TB drive. The acer has 340 gig
drive has 2 in it now an 80 & 250. It only has a vista sticker on it as I bought
it as dual boot(XP & VISTA) and it worked fine til a power surge.(both drives) I
took it to computer store to replace the power supply & he said it would not
boot and was not ever a dual boot. & could not fix it. I said OK just put new
power supply in it I will swap drives, he said you cannot, unless both are sata,
and they are. But once he put new power suplly in mos ago it has worked fine on
XP only, but I am out of room, as it is only accessing the 80 gig drive. the 250
one won't boot, or find it even when I switch em out.(the acer drives that came
with XP on 80gig & vista On 250 gig) It says there are 2 drives, but when it
wants to boot to vista one it reverts to XP. I would just use it. but it wont
find the drive(250 one) dead?
I have no clue, I could put that one in HP & reformat it for HP, that was my
plan........ if 80 wouldn't work in HP
help any?

I have an issue that may be easier to solve than the ongoing trial of the hard
drives.

I recently purchased an ASUS CG1330 from a vendor on EBay. I won't torture you
with the hell he has put me through - suffice to say I need a copy of Win7 Home
Premium to install on the system. The seller has been totally unresponsive and,
since I've already signed up for the Win8 update, I will need 7 for it to work
on
I know, I know, go buy another copy - I have spent a fortune on this machine
and, being on SSDI this machine is breaking my budget badly.

If anyone can advise how to rebuild this opsys with my license code that won't
eat my lunch(seriously) I would be most appreciative!

Sue, lets take a breath, close our eyes, and get back to the beginning. You want
to move the 1Tb drive out of the HP machine and use it as your main/primary
drive in the Acer machine, correct? The 80 gb drive currently in the Acer
machine is a good clean install of XP, correct?, no hangs or BSOD's.
The easiest way to do what you want to do is to clone the 80 gb drive. Most hard
drive manufacturers have on their web pages have a 'drive-to-drive' copy utility
you can download install and use free of charge. Western Digigal for example
calls theirs "DataLifeGuard", Seagate calls theirs "SeaTools" . This will let
you make an exact clone copy of the entire contents of the 80 Gb drive (with the
proper drivers for the Acer machine) on to the 1 TB drive that is currencly in
the HP machine.

Does the Acer machine have TWO SATA connector ports on the board, so you could
have both the 80 gb and the 1Tb hard drives installed at the same time
(temporarily)?
First, you would copy out everything you want from the 1 TB drive to the 80 gig
drive.
Next do a thorough Defrag of the 80 gig drive (disconnect from the internet,
snooze the antivirus).
Then you would use the drive-to-drive copy utility to do an exact clone
duplicate of what's on the 80 gig HD to the 1Tb HD.
Q: Is there enoough room remaining still on the 80 Gb drive so you can copy over
everyting you want from the 1 tb drive?
Q: Does the Acer machine have 2 SATA connector-ports?
If "no" to that .... : Q : Does the HP machine have 2 SATA connector-ports?

They are both sata, but when I switched out drives. it would not boot in the
acer( the hard drive taken out of HP) the acer has more usb & reader ports. It
kept trying to find drivers etc. Now they are both partitioned for
reboot/format, but I don't want to lose info on either. so How do I get the
drives switched out. I have a back up drive that has em both on it, but it would
not load drivers from BU drive? can I use a thumb drive & just copy partitioned
section for both to get em running & NOT lose data????? neither came with boot
disks, but I do have my OLD xp HP boot disks.

Another update on the Toshiba Laptop

Bad News though. They received the second motherboard from Toshiba and just
like before, they turned it on and while running "Diagnostics" it died again
after about 5 minutes. Toshiba says it will not pursue it farther because it
has to be something other than the motherboard causing it to fry, such as the
screen, wireless card, CPU, etc. My thoughts are if it were external it would
fry as soon as power is supplied not wait 5 minutes.

The tech didnt sound hopeful of being able to find out what it was because it
burns out the motherboard too quickly.

At this point there are no charges.

I will pick the laptop up tomorrow, I am hoping they do not choose to put the
original motherboard back in just so I can see if the new MB is truly dead like
when I carried it to them or I can get to the bios screen.

One suggestion given to me is the CPU cooler (the copper strip heatsink) may
have lost its gas charge and unable to cool the CPU and any related chip it
touches. If it will flash anything on the screen I will quickly turn it off and
try and find another heat sink.

I'll let you know what happens from here.

   It's a laptop!

News update on this repair, the Toshiba Service center got in the new
motherboard, ran a few diagnostics to see if everything was working ok, rebooted
and BAM it happened again. They are to contact Toshiba again tomorrow to see
what else they want to try. I would suggest another motherboard and have Toshiba
remove the troublesome Bios update from thier website as well as the Toshiba
Update Software on the Laptop.

There is no telling how many laptops this will ultimately affect.

I have an issue that may be easier to solve than the ongoing trial of the
hard drives.

I recently purchased an ASUS CG1330 from a vendor on EBay. I won't torture
you with the hell he has put me through - suffice to say I need a copy of
Win7 Home Premium to install on the system. The seller has been totally
unresponsive and, since I've already signed up for the Win8 update, I will
need 7 for it to work on
I know, I know, go buy another copy - I have spent a fortune on this machine
and, being on SSDI this machine is breaking my budget badly.

If anyone can advise how to rebuild this opsys with my license code that
won't eat my lunch(seriously) I would be most appreciative!

If you need an operating system, look on the back or under the battery
for the COA. This will tell you what OS came on the machine originally.
With the serial number, you can usually order restore disks from the
manufacturer. That will get you to the OS that the system started out with.

OR...

Most machines will install the OS using the Product Key on the COA if
you use an OEM (that's a system builder's disk) copy of the OS. Then
you'll need to download the drivers from the maker's website. You can
use any disk as they are all the same; not tied to the Product Key at all.

I've just refurbished 3 HP systems and ordered the restore disks from
HP. They cost me $20, $0 and $20. Disks from Dell typically cost about $15.

Many of the systems on sale on eBay are company systems that the vendors
or the companies wipe before selling. It's easier to just wipe the
system and let the buyer worry about the OS. If the sellers had to take
the time to reinstall the OS and drivers, the cost would go up. And most
companies either never got the restore disks, never made them or just
don't care since they're getting rid of the systems anyway.

Last update!

They appear to have swapped out the motherboards and returned her original
motherboard in the laptop, keeping the two new motherboards to return to Toshiba
for credit.

It experiences the exact symptoms as when I gave it to them.

It is now a boat anchor and we shall move on to another laptop.

Thanks

Which now means we actually have a correct diagnosis. There is a short
inside. Finding and repairing is diffucult under the best of circumstances.
So yes, I would consider it an anchor. Tho, I would put the significant
components on EBay or Craig's list.

Sue,

What program was used to perform the clone? Not all cloning programs
work the same. Many free cloning programs do not allow the use of the extra
free space given by a larger hard drive.

Other programs, such as Acronis True Image Home, will certainly allow
the entire destination drive to be used, using the "Proportional" option.
EaseUS ToDo Backup Free 5.0 makes you manually extend the volume during the
setup process by using a sliding bar {certainly not very intuitive upon
first use!}.

In addition, Windows Vista and Windows 7 allow you to "merge" an
active partition {"C:" drive} with an unused partition rather seamlessly
and without loss of data:

       Go to Control Panel\Adminstrative Tools\Computer Management\Disk
Management, RIGHT mouse click on C: drive and you should be able to choose
"Extend Volume". Generally, you want to use the entire unused volume to
extend to. If you have a Recovery volume {aka, drive partition}, things
might get a little more complicated.

Sounds like the cloning program created a matching 80GB partition on the
1TB drive. This is easy to check. Open My Computer (or Computer) and
right click on the drive in question. Click Properties and see what the
size of the drive is.
