WIN98: NO INSTALL CODE
If you have accidentally misplaced or lost your Windows 98 Setup CD-
ROM (or
your Win98 Product Key code), there is still a way to (re)install
Win98 on your
computer, without knowing the 25 digit Product Key.
This method applies to ALL Windows 98 Gold (final) releases: Full,
OEM and
Upgrade.
WARNING: This workaround requires you to modify the copyrighted code
of a file by using DEBUG! Be aware that this procedure is illegal in
the United States and Canada, and voids your Microsoft warranty! Do
it at you own risk!

NECESSARY STEPS:
1. First copy the entire \Win98 folder from your Windows 98 Setup cd-
rom to a
temporary directory on your hard disk, provided you have enough room
(170 MB).
2. Use the DOS based EXTRACT.EXE tool (located on your Setup cd-rom
in \Win98)
to copy PIDGEN.DLL to a directory on your hard drive, by running this
command
from any DOS prompt:
EXTRACT D:\WIN98\PRECOPY1.CAB PIDGEN.DLL
I presumed that D is your cd-rom drive letter. Change if different on
your
machine.
3. Run DEBUG (filename DEBUG.EXE, located in C:\Windows\Command) from
any DOS
prompt to modify PIDGEN.DLL, by typing the command lines below
EXACTLY as
shown (case insensitive), including the SPACES, and then pressing the
Enter
key after EACH line:
DEBUG drive:\folder\PIDGEN.DLL
E 1ED7
E 1EDF
W
Q
Typing "E 1ED7" and respectively "E 1EDF" above (no quotes) will
generate two
new DEBUG lines:
xxxx:1ED7 39. 8B
and respectively:
xxxx:1EDF 39. 8B
Press Enter after each one.
NOTE: If you have a hex editor, you can patch the offset 1DD7h and
1DDFh from bytecode 39h to bytecode 8Bh.
No further DEBUG segment adjustments are necessary, because
Pidgen.dll is less than 64 KB in size.
The "W" line (no quotes) tells DEBUG to write the changes to the file
(generates a message like: "writing xxxx bytes"), and then "Q" quits
(exits)
the command line debugger, returning to the DOS prompt.
4. Now run Setup from the folder where you copied the Win98
installation files. When prompted to type the serial number of the
Product Key, type any letters or numbers except all zeroes. If
everything goes well, your modified Pidgen.dll file will be used
instead of the original one from Precopy1.cab.
Also, you will not be asked to insert a "proof of upgrade" disk if
you are installing the Win98 Upgrade release, and if there is no
older Windows/WfWG installation found on any of your hard
disks/partitions:
- Windows/WfWG 3.xx setup floppies, or
- Win95/OSR2.x setup cd-rom. Win98 Setup searches specifically for
these Win95 setup files: WINSETUP.BIN, PRECOPYx.CAB and WIN_95xx.CAB.
This tip should work with Win98 NEW installs and REinstalls as well.
If you are trying to (re)install the Win98 OEM (full) release, you
might need to perform a few extra steps:
5. When Setup is almost completed, your computer will reboot.
6. When the Win98 GUI comes up, it will ask for the Product ID.
7. Cancel and shut down Windows.
8. Reboot and hit F8 (or Ctrl) at the "Starting Windows 98..." screen.
9. The MS-DOS mode Startup Menu will show up. Select "Safe mode"
(option 3).
10. When the Safe mode GUI comes up, click the Start button, click
Run, type Regedit, and press Enter.
11. Highlight the "ProductId" string, found under this Registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion
12. In the right hand pane, double-click on "ProductId".
13. Typical format of Win98 "ProductId" string:
XXXXX-XXX-XXXXXXX-XXXXX
Type in any characters (letters and/or numbers), only don't type 25
zeroes for the entire serial number!
14. Close Regedit.
15. Reboot again in Normal mode to complete the install.
Done.

Go here to learn the fastest and easiest way I know of to extract any
cab file from your Windows CD. It creates a desktop shortcut that you
just click and then enter the name of any file you need. Within
seconds the file is found and extracted to a desktop folder.
The neatest thing about this file is that you don't even have to
search for the file! It searches, finds, and extracts the file in one
step.

To find out who's connected to your computer and from where at a
given time, you can use the NETSTAT command in DOS.
While online, go to your Dos prompt(Start>Programs>MS Dos Prompt) and
simply type: NETSTAT
and then press Enter.
You can also redisplay the TCP/IP connections automatically at a set
time interval. For example if you want an update every 15 seconds,
you would simply type: NETSTAT 15
and then press Enter.

This is my latest tip that allows you to get rid of the the Internet
Explorer 5.5. startup screen. This will speed up the opening of
your browser a bit since it won't have to load the screen.
It involves a simple registry edit.
Launch regedit and go to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\Infodelivery\Restrictions
On the right hand side, create a new Dword entry, name it NoSplash
and give it a value of 1.
That's all there is to it. Restart your computer for changes to take
effect.

Note: I made this into a regfile(IENoSplash.reg) and uploaded it to
the Files area for anyone not familiar with the Registry.
Just download it and double-click it to merge into your registry.

Here's a shortcut I came up with to restart Windows(warm reboot as
requested)
1. In your C: drive or in any folder, open up a new Notepad document
and simply type "@exit" (without the quotes) on the first line.
2.Save the document with a .bat extension. Name it something like
Restart.bat.
3.Now create a shortcut to the file by dragging it to your desktop.
4.Right click the new shortcut and under properties, click the
Program tab and put a checkmark next to "Close on Exit". Under the
Advanced tab put a checkmark next to "MSDOS Mode" and uncheck "Warn
Before Entering MSDOS mode". Change the icon if you want.
Save your changes by clicking Ok or Apply and close.

That's it. Double clicking the shortcut should restart Windows.

There just doesn't seem to be any solution to your problem, other
than choosing a different printer with the features you need.
I did quite an extensive search and consulted with some experts
and the feeling is that your probably stuck with what you have -but
to be really sure you should contact IBM support and get the
information straight from the source. You might also want to try
support at their website - this is the page for your model:

www.printers.ibm.com/R5FAQ.NSF/6400?
OpenView&Start=1&Count=200&Expand=1.5#1.5

Should I find anything new, I'll be sure to keep you posted.

Vic,

Thanks for the offer. Yes, we are still looking for a solution.
Specifically the problem is this:
We are trying to eliminate the wasted paper when a document may only have 4"
of text, but the printer continues feeding paper until the 9" point is
reached. Changing the form size will not work in our situation as our
documents vary quite a bit in length. We are trying to set up something
automatic because we have so many users, who type hundreds of documents a
day, and we cannot rely on them to adjust the page length accordingly.

The printer is an IBM 6400 Line Matrix Impact printer. We print on rolls of
continuous feed paper.

I would appreciate any assistance in this problem. Let me know if you need
any additional information.

Thanks,
D. Newlon

HWDIAG -Win95\98
HWDIAG is a little known but very handy hardware diagnostic utility
that you can find hiding on the Windows 95B CD - \Other\Misc\HWTRACK.
You can run it right from the Cd or copy it to your hard drive.
Simply double-click it and it begins to analyzize your hardware. It
tells you the name of the Registry Key or Keys that refer to the
hardware being analyzized.
It´s a small utilily and very easy to use - the messages are color
coded:
Green for Registry references
Magenta for File info
Blue for Warnings
Brown for Configuration Manager
Red for Errors

If you don't have the cd you can download hwdiag from the File area.

No More "Shortcut to"
Here´s how you can create desktop shortcuts without the "Shortcut To"
text via the Registry.
Start Regedit and go to:
HKEY_USERS \ .Default \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows
\CurrentVersion \ Explorer
Add binary value to Explorer:link="00,00,00,00"
Exit and refresh oe restart your computer.
Now the shortcuts you make will be without the "Shortcut To" text.

SCANDISK LOG

Some Win95\Win98/98 SE setups are configured to automatically run
ScanDisk after Windows has either crashed or exited incorrectly.
However, this creates a Scandisk.log each and everytime which most
times is unnecessary and just an annoyance.
But did you know you could disable the log?
Here's how
Go to your Windows Command folder and find the file "Scandisk.ini"
Open it with Notepad and scroll down to the [CUSTOM]
section. You should see this line along with some others:

SaveLog=Append

Change it to read:

SaveLog=Off

Save your file.
And your done.
Next time your computer crashes and Scandisk runs on reboot, there'll
be no time wasted on creating a log file.

If you have any tips you'd like to submit on any area of
compututing, send them in. If they are valid and we don't already
have them, we will include them on our site.
We also welcome your comments on the type of tips you'd like to see.

Email Shortcut
Here´s how to create a desktop email shortcut that when clicked
will
open up a blank message form without opening up your entire email
program.
Right-click any blank area of the desktop, and choose New - Shortcut.
In the Create Shortcut text box, type "mailto:" (wihout the quotation
marks)in the Command line. Click Next, type any name for the
shortcut, and then click Finish.
Now whenever you want to write an email, just click the shortcut icon
and a blank email form will open up for you ready to use!

Hiding Find
Use this setting to hide the Find command on the Start Menu. (Note
that this
will not disable a user from pressing F3 to get to the Find dialog
box.)
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
Policies\Explorer
Edit/create the value NoFind (DWORD value) and set the value to 1 to
hide the
Find command, or 0 to display the Find command.

Notepad
Think there's not much to know about Notepad? Think again. For
example, you can
insert the current time and date in Notepad just by pressing F5. Or,
if you want
to log the date and time automatically each time you open a Notepad
file, type
.LOG on the first line, then save and close the file. Every time you
open the
file thereafter, the current date and time will be recorded in it.

Forgotton Password
If you forget your Win95 password, just press Escape at the password
box, bring
up the MS-DOS Prompt and enter dir *.PWL at the WINDOWS folder to
find your .PWL
files. Delete the one with your name in front of it. Restart your
system and
enter a new password when prompted.

Faster Modem Dialing (Windows 9x)Waiting to long for your modem to
dial? This tip lets you reduce the time it takes your modem to dial,
and increase your overall modem connection speed.

Open Control Panel | Modems, select your modem and click on
Properties. Select the Connection tab, and click on 'Advanced'.

In the text box that is labelled 'Extra Settings' at the following
text (without the quotation marks) 'S11=40'.

The number specified after S11= (in this case 40) is the time for
each tone in milliseconds. Lower numbers equals faster dialling. If
your having problems connecting try increasing the number until it
works.

Note: This may not work as planned in some countries and with some
modems.

Our office prints hundreds of documents a day on a continuous feed
printer. We have recently gone to MS Word 2000 as our Word
Processor. ( Also, we print from NT 4.0 Workstations through a NT
4.0 print server). The problem is, that there is a form feed between
each document, wasting a lot of paper. My question is, is there a
way to eliminate that form feed?

We have experimented with the Generic Text print driver. Although it
does not do the form feed, it does not allow for underlining (which
is important on our printed documents).

I would greatly appreciate any advise on this problem.

Here's a Windows trick that's not that well known unless you
know dos. Did you know you can create a virtual drive to any
folder on your system? For example you can turn your Windows
directory into a W drive that will appear in My Computer.
You do this using the SUBST command. It's easy.
Open up a Windows dos session - Start > Programs > MsDOs Prompt
and simply type the following at the prompt:

SUBST W: C:\WINDOWS

and press Enter

You now have a virtual W drive in My Computer that opens up Windows
when clicked.
