Wifi meshs I personally think are annoying, cause they require so much
infrastructure to use. But there are always places for almost
everything.
A WIFI mesh works using adhoc mode, so everyone can talk to everyone
else directly to route and exchange infomation. You will need to run
some kind of routing protocol over this to make it work, dynamically,
olsr made for this use, ospf normally makes too much traffic to be
useful, rip works, but is slower and can get messy.
This only places a mesh network in place, and generally only wire
connected devices can use it.
In order to use your laptops and other wireless devices, you either
have to install all the stuff to join them into the mesh (adhoc mode,
routing, ...), or install seperate AP units, that your clients will
connect to.
I personally perfer to double stack my wireless devices, one for the
mesh and one for the ap, and keep their channels widely seperated, and
filtered.
The mesh I used has been discontinued since a fiber backbone was
installed connecting them all together.
