Work Party 2006; Tortoise Reserve, near White Lake, North Carolina
OK the dates are set. 18-21 May 2006, for the fourth, or is it the fifth or sixth, Tortoise Reserve Work Party. And I guess I should add 'and canoe outing'. Each year Mike McCrea takes potential worker bees further and further a-field to paddle longer and longer stretches of rivers. In the last several years that has required getting up before the sun and prior to handover burn off. Then he keeps people on the water well past sunset. The mosquitoes here are so disappointed. This year I think he is doing the Hudson, as all the rivers around here have been paddled.
So if you don't wish to be coming back wet, and tired only to see that we have already consumed all the beer I suggest hiding your tent far into the woods and don't tell Mike where you are camping. The old reliable excuse of not having a canoe, paddle or life vest does not fly anymore; Mike has stashed a pile of them here.
Read over last year's invitation to make sure you don't forget anything important, like first aid kits and mace. Also directions might help. Forget where you put them; well Mike published last year's invitation in the current issue of Paddler Magazine (March/April 2006; pg 24-25) so you can find it there. The plan is rather much the same except this year we will also have the Elmer G. Worthley Botany Class joining us and Saturday we will cook a pig. For those of you from not around here a 'pig picking' is a southern thang where everyone stands about waiting to see who will drink enough that they eat the nose. If you are one of those vegetarian whackos, not to worry, we feed the hog up on corn and sweet potatoes before cooking it so its actually a three course meal. Oh and Paul is bringing post middle aged strippers, that's not exactly new, but be prepared. Don't confuse the strippers with his sister.
Lets not forget fun auction items, we may not get much work done but at least we can do something good for turtle conservation. This year's benefit will be for Project Bog Turtle-the southern chapter.
Let me know if you are coming so we can make sure we have enough beer and we catch the right sized pig. Also we might need to get a few extra wheel chairs and enema bags for all the old farts in the botany class.
