Know Your Mushrooms
Directed By Ron Mann
From the award-winning director of Comic Book Confidential, Grass, Go
Further and a host of paradigm-shifting films reappraising the backwaters
of popular culture. Ron Mann investigates the miraculous, near-secret
world of fungi with his newest piece of cinema. Filmed in Telluride during
Mushroom Festival, Know Your Mushrooms follows uber myco visionaries Gary
Lincoff and Larry Evans (two of the more expert and unforgettably
mercurial characters in the community) as they lead us on a hunt for the
wild mushroom and the deeper cultural experience attached to the
mysterious fungi.

BTW - You should have seen the great cake that Jil brought to the last BSW
meeting in honor of 900th meeting. It had lots of dogwood flowers as well
as May Apple flowers. I think she said she'd send me a photo of it - but
I never got one. :-( I wanted to post it.

I will be out of the office starting 01/02/2009 and will not return until
01/12/2009.
A neighbor of mine,
originally from Louisiana, once shared some squirrel gumbo with us. It
was quite tasty. Of course, that was the summer a squirrel threw a
half-eaten tomato at his wife's head, and watched me cover and uncover
my strawberries with netting to find out how to get in - and ate all my
strawberries. Hard to say whether those experiences flavored the gumbo.
He claimed he'd gone squirrel hunting on the Eastern Shore, not at home
where it's illegal due to the density of the human population, but we
always wondered....
On a more scientific note, I believe squirrels compete with
white-footed mice (the alternate host for Lyme disease) for acorns and
nuts. That means that reducing the squirrel population can lead to an
explosion of mice, deer ticks, and Lyme disease. There are no easy
solutions to environmental problems.

In Gray's Manual of Botany, 8th edition, by M. L. Fernald, there is a Tovara virginiana (L) Raf. forma rubra Moldenke which is described as having the calyx red or reddish.
On October 4 - Hodgepodge Lodge is going to be dedicated at the HCC during the HCC's Fall Festival. There is a link to a flyer for the festival on the schedule page.
BTW - I recently saw a plant of Polygonum virginianum which had red flowers. I see that Cronquist says they can be "suffused with pink" so maybe that is what they were. I'll have to go back and take a pic and look at them a little more closely. There were a lot of other plants in the same vicinity - but all the rest looked "normal."

Hi -
Sorry if anyone went to the page and saw the "April" at the top and didn't
look further down the page to see that July and August events were
actually posted there.
I just learned that "April" had been left there by mistake.
A class is scheduled for tomorrow:
August 2 10 am Two Below Allelopathic Plants. Do a little research and bring
some.
Also - Jean wants people to know that Corliss Glennon is accepting
donations for a bench for Roger Redden in Elmer's Garden at Cylburn. It
will cost over 2000 dollars as Cylburn is very particular about benches
now and their installation. My niece, Constance, wants to pay for the

Hi Suzy
Besides the fact that it's a fiddlehead, I can't id it much more until it
unfurls. Its very fuzzy and cinnamon color so it might be cinnamon fern -

Subject: Re: Weeding and observing at Liberty Reservoir
Everyone in the Worthley group should see the Oplismenus hirtellus subsp.
undulatifolius?and be able to recognize it without hesitation.? No one knows for
sure where this stuff is growing and where it isn't. We do know that it was
found in the Little Paint Branch Park in Beltsville and on the nearby Beltsville
Agricultural Research Center.
Charlie Davis found this grass at the Hernwood Landfill and thinks that this is
source of the massive infestation in the northern section of the Patapsco Valley
State Park and Liberty Reservoir.
But there is no guarantee that it is confined to this area. One might expect to
find it almost anyplace, including the Parks of Montgomery County.? So wherever
the Worthley Class goes, they should make a conscious effort to look for it.?
Soldiers Delight joins Liberty Reservoir, so there is a possibility that this
grass in growing there; especially in the northern section, north of Wards
Chapel Road.
This grass somewhat resembles a Panicum, but all of the Panicums grow in a
caespitose clump.? The Oplismenus grows from an above ground stolon, which makes
it easy to identify in any season of the year.
There are several places where this grass can be found without much trouble: 1)
McKeldin Area of the State Park off Marriottsville Road, 2) the horse trail
south of Old Court Road in Woodstock, 3) in the pines near the boat ramp off of
Oakland Mill Road.
I don't know of any invasive plant that has been eradicated once it has become
established, so if the Oplismenus can be eradicated, it may be the first.
Perhaps, the Wavyleaf Basketgrass people, should have their own listserver or
Yahoo or Google group, so they can discuss this exciting project.? What do you
think about that?

Hello Ed,
I know that everyone is appreciative of your letting us know about the wavy
leaved basket grass site.
I personally have not responded to your email because I am not leading the
class, and I don't think I am going to be able to join the class on Saturday at
all, no matter what the activity is.
?
Though this Saturdays Botany class may not be the best way to get a handle on
controlling this particular outbreak of Oplismenus, I do have two ideas as to
people you might contact for help in dealing with it:
?
1) Marc Imlay has lead several group volunteer efforts on outbreaks in the
Prince Georges County area. Would you like me to put you in touch with him?
Perhaps he can organize something soon.
2) Kerrie Kyde who works for Maryland DNR as an Invasive Specialist is also very
interested in controlling this species on a statewide basis. I could put you in
touch with her...
?
Would either of these ideas work for you?
Carole
?

For want of a battle the kingdom was lost.
And all for the want of a horseshoe nail.
In the case of Oplismenus, the nail is stopping it at Liberty Reservoir and the
Patapsco Valley State Park.? If it gets beyond that, the kingdom is lost!
Since I have not heard from anyone, I assume that you do not want to switch the
Saturday meeting from Soldiers Delight to Liberty Reservoir and you don't need
my assistance.
I want to get back to my work area on the petroleum pipe line trail sometime in
the near future. I have learned one thing--? I need to be more careful about
pulling up those poison ivy vines, because I have a poison ivy infection on my
hands. Weeding?can be dangerous work.

Subject: Weeding and observing at Liberty Reservoir
Greetings:
?
I was wondering if the field trip to Soldiers Delight could be changed to
Liberty Reservoir to see the O. hirtellus ssp. undulatifolius in its late spring
development.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oplismenus_hirtellus_subsp._undulatifolius
This would involve car pooling to the trail head on Ward's Chapel Road and
walking up hill for about 30 minutes. This location is about midway along the
fire road trail between Ward's Chapel Road and the Old Liberty Road. This is
where I found it growing in 1996 and is about the worst area at Liberty
Reservoir.
It is extremely important that?people learn how to recognize it, and also see
how devastating it can be to the natural environment.
Sunday, I went to section of Liberty Reservoir that is south of the end of
Bollinger Mill Road parking area and pulled up some of this grass. Here is my
report for that day.
http://home.comcast.net/~ed_uebel/WLBG.html
This is first time that I have tried pulling it up. And I did clear several
small areas, but it was slow going. The next time that I go there, I want to
take a garden rake along and try that.
The Wavyleaf Basketgrass, an invasive species of National Prominence in your own
neighborhood, surely you want to take advantage of the opportunity to observe
it.
Thank you,
Ed Uebel

Errr, well Suz I stand corrected. Maybe we could just put a stick in the ground and watch for its shadow. But glad the class is still, after all these years, still tuned into Marmota monax. Dave
For those who think it would be scientifically adequate to substitute
human for groundhog in the annual seasonal ritual, you obviously are not
aware of the theological underpinnings of groundhog as ultimate
predictive source. Please consult with Dave Pile. I think some other
kind of marmot might work, but nothing as evolutionarily advanced as
human.
It is obvious that we need to get these "scientists" more edumacated, and
this is another excellent arguement for why we need the teaching of
creation theory and intelligent design in the classroom. Remember, each
creature has its chosen place in the Grand Scheme, and n'er the twain
shall meet.

Thanks for sending these great pics. Those cupcakes are absolutely adorable. What a cute idea!! We wanted to come to that class but wanted to go to the shore for a bit. Our groundhog did not emerge from under the house so weren't able to predict the rest of winter. We took a beetle hunting walk along a DNR site on the Choptank across from Cambridge. Was such fabulous day after the really ugly Friday we had.
Take care and hope to see you soon.

The groundhogs saw their shadows at Two Below this morning, and then were enjoyed as a tastey morsel.
Many thanks to Bill and Jody for their many labors to prepare Groundhog Cupcakes, following the recipe provided by Waive...
And if you were there, you heard the story of what actually happens when the groundhog sees his shadow.
