Hello Zooters,

I am curious to know how outlined information can be stored in Zoot
which is not an outliner.

Foe example I want to store my personal information which can be made
of the following items:
1) Insurance (life, motor vehicle, pension, for each one gather all
information relative to it: commencement date of policy, maturity
date, monthly premium, notes about each, payments received from each
   of them if any.
2) Bank accounts (list all my accounts, for each one : date opened, check
numbers used,
password for each card, details about loan from a given bank etc.

3) etc.

Best regards,
  John mailto:brjlk@...

Hello:

Which version of Lotus Organizer do you have? Outlook will import LO 1.0
2.0 and LO97 files. It will also import CSV files.

Probably the easiest way would be to find someone with Outlook and Zoot who
can import your CSV file into Outlook, then synch it into a Zoot Contacts
db, then email your Zoot Contacts db to you. :-)

Outlook has some import facilities. It would be easiest if you could
somehow obtain a copy.

Greetings to all. I have just started using Zoot about a month ago as a
replacement for InfoSelect. I'm just learning the basics of Zoot, and it
seems to be exactly what I need. Still have a long way to go, though.

A question: I've got all my contacts, addresses, calendar info, etc in Lotus
Organizer. Do any of you know of a utility that will transform this info
(Fox database format, CSV) into an Outlook format so that I can sync it into
Zoot without having to do a lot of reformatting. I don't own or use
Outlook, so this may be a problem. I'd like to import some e-mail in Eudora
format as well, so a method or utility to do that would help as well.

Many thanks, and thanks be that there's a forum for Zoot users. I plan to
tap the expertise here frequently.

The greatest advantage of Outlook is that it's resources can be shared
across a network and it allows groups to tentatively book meetings (among
other things). Since its use is so common, it is easy to remain compatible
with others if Zoot is tied to Outlook. Even a MS executive said to me that
Outlook does the job but it isn't best of breed. Maybe Outlook 2002 might
have addressed this.

Greetings, all y'all!

So glad to find this group announced in the latest Zooters!

I bought ECCO a month before NetManage pulled the plug on it, and so
I didn't feel compelled to invest myself thoroughly into the learning
curve! I discovered Zoot shortly thereafter and have used it
minimally until the last year or two. As Tom continues to tweak and
improve his baby, I am becoming more and more enamored of it,
although I know I'll probably never become as attached as most of
you, simply because of the nature of my life and work -- it's just
not all that complicated. Even so, the functionality is beginning to
rival ECCO, and for that I am glad.

Mostly I use Zoot for collecting bits of info off the Web, plus
managing my contacts. I don't use Outlook for mail at home, so I
haven't figured out how to manage the email functions of Zoot -- I
know it will sync with Outlook, but is anyone syncing Zoot email with
Eudora, Pegasus, or other email client? With so many variant
clients out there, I would LOVE to see Zoot become an email/newsgroup
client in it's own right and skip the syncing process altogether.

Until Zoot is ported to Linux, of course, I'm sort of stuck --
tolerate Microsoft to enjoy the benefits of Zoot, or switch to Linux
with the StarOffice suite and lose Zoot... Catch 22, eh?

Well, anyway... I'm glad to learn about this ZootForum, and hope that
I can contribute as much as I learn.

Cheers,
Ray Whiting

people thought ecco was hard to learn.

Treat it as a game of chess. You've got to think about the
consequences of the consequences of a certain move. In fact, although
I'm lousy at chess and even lousier at computing, I've found Z4 to be
a delight to use once I'd worked out the fundamental principles
(views, folders, actions, rules). I'm sure there's plenty of inbuilt
titbits I don't know about, but I've found that if I explore enough
I'll usually find that Tom's engineered a solution to my problem
somewhere.

I thought I'd had a problem, but closer inspection revealed that I
hadn't been capturing certain items with the rules I'd set up. I've
changed that, and Zoot has been flawless ever since. Maybe if you run
a global query you'll find the email isn't missing after all?

Dave

I use the Contacts BD, the Mail DB, and the Task DB, but I've renamed
the Tasks DB to "Diary" because I've also mapped Appointments and
Journal items to it (Tools|Customise...). I'm a journalist, and I use
Journal items to designate upcoming stories, with relevant info about
contacts, places, background, web links etc. The Tasks and
Appointment functions I use as per normal (synced with Outlook and
thus a Palm, like my Mail and Contact DBs). The beauty of the Diary
DB is that I've created folders called (imaginatively) "Today"
and "Tomorrow" and "The Week". Because the one database captures all
info about tasks, meetings and story deadlines, clicking on one of
these folders gives me a complete overview of all time-dependent
items. I could have put contacts and mail in the same DB, but it
tends to complicate searches. This way, I've got things neatly
separated into 'time' items, email and addresses.

I also have turned the Memo DB into my story folder - I write all my
stories in Zoot, which makes them very easy to email through the
Zooter and searching for that quote on barley prices in 1997 is a
breeze ...

No, but you can either create a folder in Atoms with Rules/Actions
that will automatically send any items it captures straight to your
preferred folder in Tasks; or you can create a folder in Tasks that
will sync with your nominated Atoms folder either when you
activate "Smart|Run Actions" or each time that you open the folder.
Just make a folder/folders in either DB that will collect the info
you want to sync, and then check out either the "Manipulate"
or "Syncronise" options in Actions.

The rough rule of thumb is that if you want to do something, Zoot
will do it :-)

As I recall, Shift will toggle the Clipboard mode for the current
clipping only. If it's on, Shift-Ctrl-C will bypass clipping to
Zoot, and if it's off, Shift-Ctrl-C will clip to Zoot.

Hi everyone
Has anyone had problems with items not successfully making
the transition from Outlook to Zoot (or vice versa)? I am
reading and writing all my emails in Zoot now and I got
caught out when one of my colleagues reckoned that he had
sent something to me and I said that I hadn't received it.
I subsequently found it in Outlook but not in Zoot despite
the fact that Zoot had seen it because the active Zoot
category had been ticked.
TIA

I was quite pleased tonight to read Tony Kan's note in the
latest
Zooters mailing about this forum so I headed right on over
to Yahoo
to join up.

One of the things I really like about Zoot is that it proves
day
after day that I am not as smart as I think I am yet it's
not
impossibly difficult to figure out. The learning curve is
steep, the
intellectual challenges remind me of playing Myst or Riven,
but the
rewards are staggering.

When I got my first computer in the mid eighties (Kaypro II)
I
thought that it, and everything I bought after it, should be
able to
organize all of the information in my life and allow me to
deal with
it rationally. Until two years ago when I stumbled across
Zoot I'd
been sorely disappointed. While movie after movie, novel
and
thriller ever after, all portrayed computers being the
ultimate
servant of the information beset, there was nothing that a
computer
could do as far as I was concerned better than a clipping
file in a
filing cabinet.

But thanks to Zoot I no longer have umpteem dozens or
fragmentary
text files sitting in folders in my computer, cryptic notes
to myself
in Outlook, scraps and bits in other programs, and long
forgotten
files that might have been of use.

I honestly believe that I could give up every program on my
computer
except for a word processor, browser, email client, and Zoot
and be
the better for it.

All that said, there are some issues with Zoot that I'd like
addressed, such as a comprhensive help file, possibly some
tutorials,
and more examples. However, I realize that I am
participating in
what amounts to a very sophisticated beta development
program and I
hasten to add that Tom Davis has been lightning quick to
address any
issues that I have raised.

I am a media communications consultant working mainly with
relief
organisations such as CARE and the UN in disaster areas.
Based in
Calgary Alberta I have worked in Iraq, East Timor, Bosnia,
Kosovo,
Somalia etc etc. As such I need to be constantly pulling
material
into Zoot on a wide front of locations and issues. Most of
it is on
spec and probably will never be needed but I can tell you
that there
have been two occassions in the last year when I have
received one of
those "get on the next plane" phone calls when Zoot has
allowed to be
immediately pull out all of the information I needed in a
couple of
moments.

The one wish I would have for Zoot, and I know that Tom is
working on
this, is a way to export Zoot items as CSV files so I could
import
them easily into the Psion handheld I carry when in the
field.

I hope this forum takes off and we can learn from each
other. God
knows I need all the help I can get with Zoot.

Yes, should do. After you have clipped the item and it
appears in the required database, highlight it in the
item grid and above the item editor it should have the
subject or title of your item. If you hover your cursor
over it, it will change into the URL of your item.

I am already a member of another list called the PIMLIST
and while I was logged on, and out of curiosity, did a
search for Zoot, not really expecting anything because I
was aware of Tom's Zooters database already. You should
tell him about it, it might reduce his support workload
if the whole community was chiming in to help everybody's
problems.

Martin,

Thanks for joining the group. If I may ask, how did you
find this
group?

I can echo your fustration with learning Zoot 4.0. I did
them same
as you over the past year.... at least 4 installs and
removals
because I just did not get it. This final time I forced
myself to
keep at it, and I'm glad that I did. I really like Zoot.

I use Zoot 4.0 on Win 95, and have not had any of the
instabiltiy
problems you mentioned. Perhaps as we spread the word
about this
forum we'll get you an answer!

Dave

Welcome to the group. I use it on a Thinkpad iSeries
1161-71m using Windows 2000. Zoot runs OK but crashes
when I use Dragon Naturallyspeaking. Whenever I press
the toolbar buttons at the top it freezes.

I have been using Zoot for just under a year now. Before
that I was Lotus Agenda user. I shifted because I
decided that my staff should standardise on something and
Outlook won. Zoot's tight integration with Outlook and
its Agenda-like features made it a logical winner.

My company is a e-commerce business providing system
integration services. I also have a company that raises
venture capital for startups and I'm also a part owner of
a company that produces real-time information systems for
public transport. That is, we let people know where the
next bus is in real time (rather than just reproduce the
printed schedules).

Hey its Winter down here in New Zealand and it was minus
9 deg C last night.

Cheers
Tony.

Windows NT

Hi everybody

Great idea with this newsgroup. Thought of it myself but
newer
realised the idea. Good that someone did.

I took me some time to figure zoot out but now I really
want to use
it full time but I have a problem. Zoot crashes several
times a day
and I can't seem to find the problems. This really gets
to me because
I want to use it for all my info/data/ideas/etc meaning
constantly
open and available.

Is there anybody else that has experienced the same. I am
using NT 4
on a IBM ThinkPad 770Z. It's a company computer that I
cannot just
format and start over. Could it have something to do with
user
rights. All suggestions to how I can solve this problem
are welcome.

AZ, has tried to come with some suggestions that I have
tried.

And now to an introduction of myself.

I am 30 years old, Danish (are there other Danish
Zooters?), M. Sc.
in Engineering (Energy) worked 2 years in the
oil-business (mostly on
rigs around in Iran) and is now working in a technical
sales /
dimensioning function / customer contact in a company
making tunnel
pasteurisers mainly for the bewerage industry.

I have started using Zoot seriously a little over two 3
months back.
Before that I had tried a few times before but every time
I ended up
uninstalling it because I couldn't figure it out.
However, the 3rd
time I did figure it out (which I am very glad that I
did) and I now
use it as my main information processor/manager. I have
some problems
with zoot crashing but I trust it will be solved in the
near future.

Thanks for your attention and enjoy the summer,

Regards,

Martin Heick Hansen

I found the group because I searched egroups for Zoot for the 4th of
5th time to see if anybody would have finally started the a group
(don't know why I didn't before). And SOMEBODY HAD :-)))). Yeaaarr.

I also did the installations and removals. I did it 3 times and the
3rd time I got the point and spent a lot of time on playing around
changing rules and actions. Unfortunately, it keeps crashing 2-3
times a day so now I have started up InfoSelect just to have a place
to jot down ideas and text that I want to save.

Glad to hear that you do not have any problems with it. Then I can
still see a reason why I should stick to it.

Looking forward to all the exiting discussions and inspirations that
will come through this group.

Martin

Martin,

Thanks for joining the group. If I may ask, how did you find this
group?

I can echo your fustration with learning Zoot 4.0. I did them same
as you over the past year.... at least 4 installs and removals
because I just did not get it. This final time I forced myself to
keep at it, and I'm glad that I did. I really like Zoot.

I use Zoot 4.0 on Win 95, and have not had any of the instabiltiy
problems you mentioned. Perhaps as we spread the word about this
forum we'll get you an answer!

I guess the question is whether to use ONE unified desktop database
or to use the desktop items.

If you use Outlook for more that just mail there is an idea in also
using the desktop items and the copy items via rules and actions to
the appropriate other databases (that's the way I prefere it). Then I
will have both the information in my subject specific database (for
example music or work) and in Mail.

If only use Outlook for mail and if you do not have a lot of data
that you want to store it might be an advantage to work in a unified
desktom database (template database) and transfer all mails to this.

Or if ......

You have to find out what and how much you want store and find and
then optimize the way YOU use and setup Zoot.

Can't help you on this one?

tony, will this also trap the URL of the page I'm clipping? I seem to
get random results, but I'll try what you suggest to see what happens.

Thanks,
Dave

I used Lotus Agenda and HP200LX's PIM suite. I still use the HP200LX
since this is with me all the time and the alarms remind me of
appointments even when it is turned off.

The HP200 can be synched with Outlook which can in turn be synched
with Zoot.
Cheers
Tony.

You don't use Zooter-New-Web Page.
You make sure that the database you want the information saved in is
open in the project that is active. Then use zooter-clip to-
<database> whatever the name of your database is...

I use clipboard mode to quicly clip items, but I also use cut and
paste to move to other sites and edit documents. Has anyone been able
to assign a hotkey or function key to the clipboard-clip mode, so
that ALT-X or ALT-CTL-X could invoke a clip, leaving Ctl-C for copy?

When I clip a portion of a web page and use the Zooter | New |
Webpage, it puts it in the Web database, not the separate database I
created for a separate project I am working on.

It make for more work to manually move those Items from the web
database to the project database each day. Any shortcuts, fellow

Can any one explain in plain English how they use the Desktop
databases, and if they simply keep adding their business-unique items
to those databases, or if you create a new one and are able to manage
all of them.

Also, can folder actions and rules work -between- databases, that is,
can I set up a rule/action in the Tasks folder that will "see" a new
item in the Atoms folder (without me having to have the same
action/rule in each database I use)?
