SORRY FOR ANY CROSSPOSTING

Dear Colleagues,

I am delighted to announce the
14th International Symposium on Ethics, Business and Society
hosted by IESE Business School, University of Navarra in Barcelona, Spain, on May 18-19, 2006.

Topic: TOWARDS A COMPREHENSIVE INTEGRATION OF ETHICS INTO MANAGEMENT: PROBLEMS AND PROSPECTS.

Details and updated information: http://www.iese.edu/14symposium

Deadlines:
January 15, 2006: Paper proposal
February 15, 2006: Response of acceptance of the proposal
April 10, 2006: Full papers

Rationale
Business Ethics and Ethics in Management have already devoted considerable attention to dealing with ethical dilemmas and particular ethical issues. However, we are still far from a comprehensive integration of ethics into management theories and managerial practices.
Recently, many leading managerial theories, such as agency theory, transaction costs theory, institutional theory and others have received much criticism. They have been accused of fostering egoistic behavior in managers and even of having contributed to well-known financial scandals (see, e.g., Academy of Management Learning & Education, March 2005).
In response to this, the purpose of this Symposium is to explore the problems of current management theories and practices, and the prospects for improving them. At the same time, new proposals for a more comprehensive integration of ethics into management are welcome.

For more information and correspondence contact Prof. Domènec Melé - IESE Business School – Dep. Business Ethics - Av. Pearson, 21 - 08034 Barcelona - Phone: (34) 93 253 42 00 - Fax: (34) 93 253 43 43 – Mail to: mele@...

I would be pleased if this symposium suits your interests and schedule.

Best regards,

> Since its first edition in 1998, the symposium series "From Agent
> Theory to Agent Implementation" has been not only documenting the
> progress in agent-related technologies, but also managed to contribute
> to the rapid development of this area. AT2AI actively promotes the
> exchange of ideas and experiences between researchers and
> practitioners working on the whole range of theoretical and
> application-oriented issues of agent technology, covering both the
> micro and macro aspects of agent design and the transition from
> drawing boards and partly idealised models, over modelling tools and
> frameworks, to deployment, configuration and maintenance of
> implementations.
>
> AT2AI-3 (http://www.ofai.at/~paolo.petta/conf/at2ai3/)
> produced a first blueprint of a layered ecology of technologies for
> the development of agent based applications (cf. the editorial of
> Applied Artificial Intelligence 16(9-10), 2003). This perspective
> considers middleware, tools, off-the shelf platforms, integrated
> development environments (IDEs), and the like, with respect to their
> practical value to improve the applications delivered. The qualities
> of these support technologies can in turn be improved and better
> exploited with the design of architectural frameworks and the
> deployment of standards. The evolution of these in turn can be
> assisted by the development of sound theoretical foundations and
> related formal methods. Methodologies are considered as working

> how to identify, align, and process application- and

PURPOSE / HISTORY:

This set of joint conferences is the largest annual
gathering of researchers in computer science, computer
engineering and applied computing. Each of the 28 joint
conferences in WORLDCOMP is the premier conference for
presentation of advances in their respective fields.

The motivation is to assemble a spectrum of affiliated
research conferences into a coordinated research meeting
held in a common place at a common time. The main goal
is to provide a forum for exchange of ideas in a number
of research areas that interact. The model used to form
these annual conferences facilitates communication among
researchers in different fields of computer science,
computer engineering and applied computing. Both inward
research (core areas of computer science and engineering)
    and outward research (multi-disciplinary, Inter-disciplinary,
and applications) will be covered during the conferences.

PROPOSAL FOR ORGANIZING TECHNICAL SESSIONS:

Each technical session will have at least 6 paper
presentations (from different authors). The session
chairs will be responsible for all aspects of their
    sessions; including, soliciting papers, reviewing,
selecting, ... The names of session chairs will appear
as Associate Editors in the conference proceedings and
on the cover of the books.

Proposals to organize technical sessions should include
the following information: name and address (+ E-mail)
of proposer, title of session, a 100-word description of
the topic of the session, the name of the conference the
session is submitted for consideration, and a short
description on how the session will be advertised (in
most cases, session proposers solicit papers from
colleagues and researchers whose work is known to the
session proposer). Mail your proposal to H. R. Arabnia
(address is given above); E-mail submissions are preferred.
We would like to receive the proposals by December 29, 2005.

SUBMISSION OF PAPERS:

Prospective authors are invited to submit their draft
paper (about 5 to 8 pages - single space, font size of 10
    to 12) to H. R. Arabnia by Feb. 20, 2006. E-mail submissions
in MS document or PDF formats are preferable (Fax or postal
submissions are also fine.) All reasonable typesetting
formats are acceptable (later, the authors of accepted
papers will be asked to follow a particular typesetting
format to prepare their papers for publication.)

The length of the Camera-Ready papers (if accepted) will
be limited to 7 (IEEE style) pages. Papers must not have
been previously published or currently submitted for
publication elsewhere. The first page of the draft paper
should include: title of the paper, name, affiliation,
postal address, E-mail address, telephone number, &
Fax number for each author. The first page should also
include the name of the author who will be presenting
the paper (if accepted) and a maximum of 5 keywords.
Also, the name of the conference that the paper is being
submitted to must be mentioned on the first page.

Papers will be evaluated for originality, significance,
clarity, and soundness. Each paper will be refereed by
two researchers in the topical area. The Camera-Ready
papers will be reviewed by one person.

MEMBERS OF PROGRAM & ORGANIZING COMMITTEES:

The Program Committee includes members of chapters
    of World Academy of Science (chapters: supercomputing;
    scientific computing; artificial intelligence; imaging
    science; databases; simulation; software engineering;
    embedded systems; internet and web technologies;
    communications; computer security; and bioinformatics.)
The Program Committee for individual conferences is
currently being formed. Those interested in joining
the Program Committee should email H. R. Arabnia
    (hra@...) the following information:
Name, affiliation and position, complete mailing address,
email address, tel/fax numbers, a short biography
together with research interests and the name of the
    conference offering to help with.

LOCATION OF CONFERENCES:

The conferences will be held in the Monte Carlo Resort
hotel, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA (with any overflows at other
near-by hotels). The Monte Carlo Resort is a mega hotel
with excellent conference facilities and over 3,000 rooms.
The hotel is minutes from the airport with 24-hour
shuttle service to and from the airport. This hotel has
    many recreational attractions, including: waterfalls,
spa, pools & kiddie pools, sunning decks, Easy River
water ride, wave pool with cascades, lighted tennis
courts, health spa (with workout equipment, whirlpool,
sauna, ...), arcade virtual reality game rooms, nightly
shows, snack bars, a number of restaurants, shopping area,
bars, ... Many of these attractions are open 24 hours a
day & most are suitable for families & children. The
negotiated room rate for conference attendees is very
reasonable. The hotel is within walking distance from
most other attractions (major shopping areas, recreational
destinations, fine dining & night clubs, free street
    shows, ...).

_+_+_+_+_+_+_+_+_+_+ ICEECS 2006 Call for Papers _+_+_+_+_+_+_+_+_+_+

ICEECS Call for Papers
11th IEEE International Conference on Engineering of Complex Computer Systems
Co-located with Computational Systems Bioinformatics (CSB 2006)

Sponsored by:

IEEE Computer Society, IEEE Technical Committee on Complexity in Computing
NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, NASA Software Engineering Laboratory
Stanford University, CA, USA, 10-14 August 2006.

With the ever expanding range of computing platforms and applications, system
complexity is on the rise. Increasing intelligence and autonomics in today’s
systems requires innovative approaches to address these concomitant complexity
issues. At this cross-section of volume and complexity, current technologies are
often ineffective at coping with the demands for quality computer systems.
Manifold dependencies between the critical software, hardware, communications,
and human elements now drive computer system and software architectures.
Complexity of software systems has grown significantly, pervading several key
application areas including Manufacturing, Communications, Transportation,
Internet, Entertainment, Mobile, Healthcare, Aerospace, and Energy.
These systems are frequently distributed over heterogeneous networks, involving
Internet technologies. Inundated by temporal constraints, boundless functionalities,
complex algorithms, distributed and mobile architectures, security constraints,
reliability, high performance, interoperability, security, and the like, these
complexities are further weighing down development and  evolution of today’s
software systems and ultimately the organizations they serve.

The goal of this conference is to assemble industrial, academic and government
experts, from a variety of user domains and software disciplines, to examine key
complexity problems and effective solutions. Researchers, practitioners, tool
developers and users, and technology transition experts are all welcome.
The scope of the interest includes long-term research, near-term complex system
requirements and promising tools, existing systems, and commercially available tools.

Topic Areas:

Papers are solicited in all areas related to complex computer-based systems,
including the causes of complexity and means of avoiding, controlling, or coping with
complexity. Topic areas include, but are not limited to:
-System and software architecture and system engineering
-Tools, environments, and languages for complex systems
-Formal methods and approaches to manage and control complex systems
-Integration of heterogeneous technologies
-Software and system development and control processes for complex systems
-Human factors and collaborative aspects
-Interoperability and standardization
-Systems and software safety and security
-Industrial automation, embedded and/or real time systems
-Content production and distribution systems, mobile and multi-channel systems
-Software complexity visualization
-Virtual environments for managing complexity

Paper Submissions:

Research papers, case studies, lessons learned, status reports,
and discussions of practical problems faced by industry and user domains are all
welcome submissions.
For review, submissions are divided into two categories: Technical Papers
and Experience Reports.
Submitted papers should be formatted in the style of IEEE-Computer Society Format: http://www.computer.org/cspress/instruct.htm.
Submitted manuscripts must be in English and should be no longer than 4000 words
or 10 formatted pages.
Authors of accepted papers will be required to sign a copyright release form.
IEEE Computer Society Press will publish the proceedings.
Submission Procedure: Please email your manuscripts in PDF format to the
program chairs listed above.

>* Conference Background and Goals
>Mobile Learning, although in its infancy as a research area, has to date
>generated much interest and discussion among researchers. In particular,
>financial, logistical or technical reasons, such as the ever increasing
>availability of wireless portable devices, have provided a rich
>environment for the proliferation of ‘mobile learning applications’. While
> there is an increasing number of mobile applications and devices that
>offer substantial potential to support and enable learning and teaching
>processes, the danger of designing, developing and implementing learning
>application for mobile devices that are not truly anchored in sound
>principles of learning is something researcher in the area of mobile
>learning must be mindful of.
>
>Research and developments in the field of mobile learning have yielded
>numerous experiences and tools that could be broadly classified into
>administrative, referential, interactive, data collection, location aware
>and collaborative categories. While the initial categories to some extend
>attempt to replicate or augment applications available on fixed desktop or
>laptop computers, the later leverage off the unique attributes of wireless
>mobile devices by creating new learning opportunities which would not be
>possible without mobile technology.
>
>Against this background, the Mobile Learning 2006 International Conference
>aims to provide a forum for presenting and discussing cutting edge mobile
>learning research. In particular empirical research informed by theories
>of learning such as collaborative, contextual, constructivist and

The 50th Annual Meeting of the International Society for the Systems Sciences, Sonoma State University, Rohnert Park, California, USA, July 9th - 14th 2006

Complexity, Democracy & Sustainability

The 50th anniversary conference of the International Society for the Systems Sciences (ISSS) offers a landmark opportunity to celebrate and reinvigorate a half-century of interdisciplinary collaboration and synthesis. The ISSS is unique among systems-oriented institutions in the breadth of its scope, bringing together scholars and practitioners from academic, business, government, and non-profit communities to explore what Gregory Bateson has called the "pattern that connects."

These past fifty years have produced a tremendous richness and breadth of research into the nature of complexity, from the scientific study of complex systems to interactive approaches in management and community development. Building on this impressive heritage, the 50th annual meeting of the ISSS aims to convene leading thinkers and practitioners from across the spectrum of systems-related fields in order to nurture an ongoing synthesis of theory and practice, to cultivate a more integrated understanding of the challenges confronting humanity, and to envision possible paths toward solutions. Both the American Society for Cybernetics and the Ackoff Center for Advancement of Systems Approaches (ACASA) will be holding annual meetings in partnership with the Sonoma conference; and representatives from other related organizations will be participating in the program, including the System Dynamics Group, the Santa Fe Institute, the New England Complex Systems Institute, the Institute for Intercultural Studies, the General Evolution Research Group, and the Center for Organizational Dynamics (University of Pennsylvania), among others.

The theme for this anniversary conference, “Complexity, Democracy, and Sustainability,” is an attempt to capture some key dimensions in the broadly defined field of systems research. Following an opening keynote from Fritjof Capra on Sunday evening, July 9, the conference will be organized around four main plenary sessions:

  • Complex Systems and the Roots of Systems Thinking
  • Self-Organization and Living Systems
  • Ecological Systems and Sustainability
  • Social Systems Design and Practice

Confirmed speakers include Ralph Abraham, Yaneer Bar Yam, Vincent Barabba, Mary Catherine Bateson, Mike C. Jackson, Alexander & Kathia Laszlo, Ervin Laszlo, Hunter Lovins, Humberto Maturana, Richard Norgaard, Susan Oyama, George Richardson, and Geoffrey West.

ISSS conferences have a tradition of interaction and rich conversation, integrating provocative plenary discussions with breakout sessions organized around Special Integration Groups (SIGs) and other interactive formats for dialogue and synthesis. This year we plan to incorporate even more interactive dynamics into the morning plenary sessions. The formats of the afternoon breakout sessions will vary from traditional paper presentations to general discussions, as noted in the description for each session. Along with the traditional SIGs, we are organizing the following additional sessions: Economics and Complementary Currencies, Arts-Informed Inquiry, Terrorism and Peace, Climate Change, and a Bateson Forum. We also plan to create opportunities for Open Space and World Café Conversations.

We invite proposals for papers relating to the conference theme, as well as sub-themes proposed by SIG chairs. Proposals for additional forums on systems-related areas not addressed by existing SIGs and other proposed sessions will be considered. For information on submitting abstracts and proposals, see the conference web pages.

Pre and Post-Conference Workshops: We are currently planning a pre-conference workshop on Mind in Nature and a post-conference workshop on The Food System. Additional information will be available on the ISSS website.

Deadlines: The priority deadline for submission of abstracts and panel proposals is February 28, 2006. Abstracts submitted after this date and before June 1 will be considered for inclusion in the program on a space-available basis. Papers accepted for presentation will be compiled on a CDROM and distributed at the conference. The deadline for submission of full papers is April 30, 2006. For information on submission of abstracts, see http://projects.isss.org/Main/Sonoma2006CallsForPapers

Location: The conference will be held at Sonoma State University, located in the heart of the Sonoma Valley vineyards, 50 miles north of San Francisco. There is a shuttle service from both the Oakland and San Francisco airports to the Doubletree Hotel in Rohnert Park, which is just a 5-10 minute taxi ride from the conference site.

Accommodations: Comfortable accommodations in on-campus housing are included in the Resident Registration Fees as outlined below. Fees include all meals, from Sunday evening, July 9, through Friday lunch, July 14. Rooms are all singles, each with an adjoining bathroom, arranged in four bedroom suites that include a kitchen and living room. More details on the facilities are available online.

Registration: We anticipate having on-line registration available before April 15; in the meantime a downloadable registration form is available on the ISSS web site. Early registration is recommended, as space may be limited. Registration fees are described below for both resident and non-resident categories. Non-resident fees do not include parking passes (which can be purchased on-site) nor transportation to and from the conference site. There will be an additional charge of $30 for the banquet on Thursday, July 13 for both residents and non-residents.

Formal Ontologies for Communicating Agents
http://www.loa-cnr.it/esslli06/
July 31 - August 4, 2006

organized as part of the European Summer School on Logic, Language and  Information
ESSLLI 2006 http://esslli2006.lcc.uma.es/
July 31 - August 11, 2006 in Malaga

************************************************************************ ******************

WORKSHOP ORGANIZERS:

Roberta Ferrario (ferrario at loa-cnr.it)
Nicola Guarino (guarino at loa-cnr.it)
Laurent Prevot (prevotlaurent at gmail.com)

************************************************************************ ******************

WORKSHOP PURPOSE:

In recent years lots of efforts have been devoted to formal studies of
human and artificial agent communication. Research advancements have  been achieved along three main lines: (i) agent's internal states and  dynamics, (ii) social interaction and conventional communicative  patterns, (iii) semantics-pragmatics interface - especially  in the  dialogue context (i.e. the interplay between the semantic content of  messages and the communicative acts themselves). There is a recent  trend of studies trying to integrate these approaches in many ways. On  the other hand, formal ontology has been consecrated as a good solution  for comparing and integrating information and thus its application to  this specific domain is very promising . More precisely, an ontological  analysis of the fundamental ingredients of interaction and  communication will make explicit the hidden ontological assumptions  underlying all these proposals.
Ontology has also proven to be a very powerful means to address issues  related to the exchange of meaningful communication across autonomous  entities, which can organize and use information heterogeneously.
The purpose of the workshop is therefore to gather contributions that  (i) take seriously into account the ontological aspects of  communication and interaction and (ii) use formal ontologies for  achieving a better semantic coordination between interacting and  communicating agents.

*********************************************************

WORKSHOP TOPICS

We encourage contributions concerning the two main areas listed below  with a particular attention to  explore the interplay between  ontological analysis and its applications in practical cases.

* Ontological aspects of interaction and communication
    - Ontological analysis of interaction and communication
    - Studies on the structure and coherence of interaction
         - Logical models for communicative acts
    - Primitives of interaction and communication
    - Formal semantics of dialogue

*Semantic coordination through formal ontologies
    - Dialogue semantics and formal ontology
    - Dynamic ontology sharing
    - Ontological primitives for meaning negotiation, ontological  alignment and semantic interoperability
        - Ontology evolution through communication
       - Concrete problems and experiences in terminological  disambiguation and integration

************************************************************************ ******************

Formal Ontologies for Communicating Agents
http://www.loa-cnr.it/esslli06/
July 31 - August 4, 2006

organized as part of the European Summer School on Logic, Language and  Information

WORKSHOP ORGANIZERS:

Roberta Ferrario (ferrario at loa-cnr.it)
Nicola Guarino (guarino at loa-cnr.it)
Laurent Prevot (prevotlaurent at gmail.com)

************************************************************************ ******************

WORKSHOP PURPOSE:

In recent years lots of efforts have been devoted to formal studies of
human and artificial agent communication. Research advancements have  been achieved along three main lines: (i) agent's internal states and  dynamics, (ii) social interaction and conventional communicative  patterns, (iii) semantics-pragmatics interface - especially  in the  dialogue context (i.e. the interplay between the semantic content of  messages and the communicative acts themselves). There is a recent  trend of studies trying to integrate these approaches in many ways. On  the other hand, formal ontology has been consecrated as a good solution  for comparing and integrating information and thus its application to  this specific domain is very promising . More precisely, an ontological  analysis of the fundamental ingredients of interaction and  communication will make explicit the hidden ontological assumptions  underlying all these proposals.
Ontology has also proven to be a very powerful means to address issues  related to the exchange of meaningful communication across autonomous  entities, which can organize and use information heterogeneously.
The purpose of the workshop is therefore to gather contributions that  (i) take seriously into account the ontological aspects of  communication and interaction and (ii) use formal ontologies for  achieving a better semantic coordination between interacting and  communicating agents.

*********************************************************

WORKSHOP TOPICS

We encourage contributions concerning the two main areas listed below  with a particular attention to  explore the interplay between  ontological analysis and its applications in practical cases.

* Ontological aspects of interaction and communication
    - Ontological analysis of interaction and communication
    - Studies on the structure and coherence of interaction
         - Logical models for communicative acts
    - Primitives of interaction and communication
    - Formal semantics of dialogue

*Semantic coordination through formal ontologies
    - Dialogue semantics and formal ontology
    - Dynamic ontology sharing
    - Ontological primitives for meaning negotiation, ontological  alignment and semantic interoperability
        - Ontology evolution through communication
       - Concrete problems and experiences in terminological  disambiguation and integration

    and outward research (multi-disciplinary, Inter-disciplinary,
and applications) will be covered during the conferences.

PROPOSAL FOR ORGANIZING TECHNICAL SESSIONS:

Each technical session will have at least 6 paper
presentations (from different authors). The session
chairs will be responsible for all aspects of their
    sessions; including, soliciting papers, reviewing,
selecting, ... The names of session chairs will appear
as Associate Editors in the conference proceedings and
on the cover of the books.
