Have a look at Rolland Munro and Jan Mouritsen's edited book: Accountability: Power, ethos and the technologies of managing. London: International Thomson Business Press; 1996. John Law has a chapter in there: Organising accountabilities: ontology and the mode of accounting. there are several other good chapters as well. You might also like to look at Marilyn Strathern's edited book: Audit cultures : anthropological studies in accountability, ethics, and the academy. New York: Routledge; 2000 and perhaps John Law's: Organizing modernity. Oxford, UK ; Cambridge, Mass., USA: Blackwell; 1994.
