I am am new to this list and I am not sure if this issue has been
discussed
before. I am running Adobe InDesign 1.5 om a Mac with 192 Meg
ram. It use to
run fine and now I can not even open InDesign because it says
AGMLib not
found. I have reinstalled and still no staisfation. Afew days ago I
installed NAV 7.0 and though this might be the problem. I have
removed
everything with Clean Sweep and it still will not open.? Any Ideas
what I
could do next?

Firstly, you'll need a fairly hefty system to run InDesign. I'd be going for
at least a Pentium III with 192mb RAM. That aside, there are a few things
which ID doesn't have that Pagemaker does, such as the story editor, Table
of Contents generator and Indexing tool. However, you might not need these
things if you're on a newspaper, and perhaps you can use something like Word
as a text editor. ID imports Word files quite well.
That adise, there are plenty of tricky things that you can do in ID that you
can't in Pagemaker. There are better built-in tools for drawing in ID (such
as a pen tool like in Illustrator) and doing things like stroked text is a
cinch.
On thing to make sure of though is that whoever is printing the job will
accept InDesign files. The other option you have is to supply the printer
with PDFs, but I'd recommend making them with Distiller as opposed to ID's
built-in PDF export filter, because you have more control. In any case, talk
to your printer first.

You won't find it: it's a special product which Adobe only offers to certain
businesses. I'm not too sure on what the exact detail is, but here's what
someone wrote on the Blueworld InDesign list:
"InCopy is available only to third-party programmers who want to use InCopy
as a front end for proprietary pagination software etc. The InCopy front end
would presumably provide a text editor, file-tracking capabilities and so
forth. It would be linked to the pagination extension, which uses InDesign."

Hi everybody--
I'm currently a high school student working as the Production Manager of my
high school newspaper. For the longest time, we did the paper on MS
Publisher and then did our print run on the school's copy machine. This
year, though, we stepped up to professional printing on newsprint.
So, accordingly, we moved up to Adobe PageMaker 6.5 running on a borrowed IBM
computer. Next year though, we're getting our own computer, and
consequently, we've come to a crossroads with the software.
I guess my question is, is the leap from PageMaker to InDesign worth it?
Being an indesign group, I'm expecting a little bias, but I was wondering if
anyone had any words of wisdom regarding indesign vs. pagemaker vs. quark,
particularly for the newspaper end of things.
Another thing I was wondering about was the elusive InCopy....I've read about
it on the Adobe website--supposedly it would allow copyeditors and editors to
work on content through a LAN while designers laid out the pages, constantly
updating the content consistently. The only place I've heard about it is on
the Adobe website...I haven't seen anything about it anywhere else...
So I was just wondering if anyone had any thoughts...

These aren't just the image previews that you're referring to, are they? Go
to Edit > Preferences > General and change the image display to "Full
resolution". If they all look fine then it's just the on-screen display: it
does that so that you can work faster. It's really slow working in full-res
mode, so only use it when it's necessary to see the images in all their
on-screen glory.

Hi,
I am placing three images in my document. Two of the images
look great. One of the images looks jagged and not well defined.
What am I doing wrong? I have made identical adjustment to all
three in Photoshop.

It sounds as if 6.0 is not recognizing the fonts on your computer,
it's replacing them.

version 6.0 some of the fonts do not reproduce correctly and show up
as symbols and/or have irregular spacing. When I switch back to
Photoshop 5.5 there is no problem with rasterizing and opening the
files.
I checked the preference settings of the Photoshop upgrade (6.0) but
do not see anything addressing this issue. I do notice with version
5.5 I see a progress bar "parsing" the file before rasterizing it and
with version 6.0 the rasterizing process begins immediately.
Any and all suggestions are most appreciated.

Usually when I get that, there is a paragraph return after the last line of
text that I haven't spotted ---- you could check for that.

Tim,
Select the frame and go to the Object menu >>> Text frame Options and
adjust Inset spacing.
Another way is to select the text with the Text tool and use the Left and
Right indent in the Paragraph Pallet.

Hi Bob,
I don't know if my decision regarding PM / ID will be of any use to you.
I don't use InDy for a living --- I do a Newsletter for a group of local
churches, although four page magazine would be more descriptive as it has a
lot of photographs and graphics and laid out like a magazine. The Printer we
use is Mac and Quark (I'm PC) and I send him .ps files which work with no
problem.
I previously used PM and loved it. When InDY was first introduced I had to
decide what to do with regard to the Introductory price ---- if I didn't buy
it then it would have been difficult to buy at the full price. Also, I
wasn't sure what the future of PM was.
Since getting InDy, I haven't used PM ---- I love InDy. The only
disadvantage I find is the lack of Build Booklet (There is an included
script that converts to PDF but I haven't used it). I love the fact that you
can import native Illustrator and Photoshop files and switch back and
forward to edit them.
There is a build booklet plug in available from www.alap.com but I'm hoping
that feature is part of ver. 2 ---- it has been requested by a lot of people
(please Adobe!) ---- whenever that is.

Tim,
You can set the Inset via the 'Text Frame Options' dialog accesible via the
Object menu or the right (ctrl-click on Mac) mouse menu.

camera-ready output. (Small mountain community, mostly Realtor clients.)
Pagemaker is getting very old and I have concerns for it's ability to run
in Windows 2000 Pro (it surely isn't supported) and the upcoming Whistler
MS product.
The current Adobe discount purchase offer of $299 is expiring on 11-30-00!
Can anyone discuss the probability of an extension of that date and/or the
possibility of a similar offer on "InDesign 2"?
The final decision on this offer is obviously at hand! Anyone else at this
point? What are your plans?

Here's your clue Adam,
Create your two (or more) pages for your spread, from the Pages
palette, select the pop-up menu, select "Keep Spread Together."
This was named "Island Spreads" in ID 1.0.
Also to keep Islands from separating when adding pages, go back to
the palette menu and select "Allow pages to shuffle." You can read all about
these in
the manual and "Help Topics." It might be a little easier to follow now. HTH.

when printing files to our post-script emulator printer, the printer
truncates photos, moves them, or just doesn't print them. We only have
this problem when printing from InDesign. I don't know why this
happens. If we print to post-script, and then pdf, it comes out ok..
help?!?

In the recent Illustrator upgrade (version 9) making a selection
transparent is easier than ever. It was always possible but involved
a lot more work although a company called Hot Door Transparency had a
plug-in for earlier versions of Illustrator to create varied degrees
of opacity much easier. There is no way to create a transparent
selection in InDesign (as far as I know). The effect must be created
in Photoshop or Illustrator and be placed in InDesign after the fact.
If anyone knows a better approach feel free to jump in.

Welcome to the group!!
InDesign is user friendly with all Adobe graphic apps and has
virtually the same interface. If you are familiar with Photoshop or
Illustrator you shouldn't have too much problem getting started. I
found the user manual that came with the program to be very
informative.
I don't know if Adobe will be successful overtaking QuarkXPress in
the page-layout war but as one who used Quark for a while I find
InDesign to be more user friendly. The trick is to find vendors
(printers) who will print from InDesign files. Time will tell if
Adobe will be successful and become the standard.

Hello
I'm having trouble with InDesign 1.0 for PC.
When I print a page range from 1-10, the output will be 10,9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1
!
This is a problem when I print to a PS file, because the Distiller will
process the pages in the wrong order also!
Anybody has a solution?
