more.

WHAT's NEW?

* Space Infrared Telescope Facility (SIRTF)
http://www.aerospaceguide.net/telescope/sirtf.html

The Space Infrared Telescope Facility (SIRTF) spacecraft is an
infrared space telescope which will allow astronomers to study
everything from asteroids to distant galaxies. It was launched aboard
a Delta 2 rocket from Cape Canaveral, Florida on August 25, 2003.
NASA may announce a new name for SIRF later in 2003.

* New Book Releases
http://aerospaceguide.net/spacebook/index.html

This is a new page lists some of the best new books from June 2003 to
November 2003.

If you are interested in Russia's ISS crew transport vehicle then I
recommend the book "Soyuz: A Universal Spacecraft" which explains all
of the Soyuz types and includes a few page of the Zarya the Ballastic
Shuttle. Xarya was an enlarged Super Soyuz which was going to be
launched by the Zenit Rocket. Zarya was cancelled in 1989.

My personal favourite book is Dyna-Soar: Hypersonic Strategic Weapons
System. If you are interested in spaceplanes, then this is the book
for you.

* Dyna-Soar X-20
http://www.aerospaceguide.net/dynasoar.html

Nasa's 1960's Dyna-Soar (stands for DYNAmic SOARing) spaceplane was
also known as the X-20. It was to be the first US Spaceplane to reach
hardware. DynaSoar was the long needed program to explore the
questions of high altitude hypersonic flight. The X-20 would have
been covered with ceramic heat-resistant material, much like the
Space Shuttle.

* Extrasolar Planets
http://www.aerospaceguide.net/extrasolar.html

This page consists of links on Extrasolar Planets. So far 100 have
been found.

SPACE NEWS IN BRIEF

* India's first moon probe, Chandrayan-1 has been given the go-ahead
by Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee during his Independence
day address on 15th August, 2003. The launch is expected in 2008.

* The launch of a Long March 2F launch vehicle planned for late
October/November, 2003 may involve one Chinese "taikonaut" on a one
day test mission. The spacecraft will be called Shenzou 5.

* NASA's Orbital Space Plane is now set to fly as early as 2008. The
intention is to have a cheap vehicle (either spaceplane or reusable
capsule) to be launched by an expendable rocket such as the Atlas V
or Delta 4.

* Investigators have found that Space Shuttle Columbia crew members
survived another minute after their final communications with the
ground. Recovered sensor data suggests the crew cabin was the last
piece of the orbiter to disintegrate.

* The European Space Agency (ESA) plans to launch a spacecraft to
Venus in November 2005 called Venus Express. It will be launched by a
Soyuz Fregat Rocket.

* On August 10, 2003, ISS Commander Yuri Malenchenko became the first
cosmonaut to be married whilst in space. The ceremony took place
during a private commmunication session between Johnston Space
Center, Texas and the ISS. The law in the US State of Texas allows
mariages when the groom is absent from the ceremony as long as there
is a valid reason.
