SPACE NEWS IN BRIEF
* International Space Station (ISS) assembly operations will be on
hold at least for another 11 months while the Space Shuttle is
grounded. The ISS will continue to use Soyuz Manned Spacecraft for
crew ferrying and the Progress M-1 as a cargo carrier. Hopefully the
first European Space Agency's ATV (Automated Transfer Vehicle) will
successfully launch in September 2004 and it will supplement the ISS
cargo carrying capacity.
The first Space Shuttle flight since the Columbia accident will be
STS-114 and it may be lauched in October 2004. It will consist of
seven crew. Eileen Collins will commander.
* According to the Russian Academy of Science Institute of Astronomy
there are approximately 10,000 pieces of debris longer than one metre
in earth orbit, weighing a total of 300,000 tonnes.
* China plans a lunar sample return mission in 2010.
* The Deep Impact project is offering you to Send Your Name to a
Comet! If you want your name and the names of your friends and
relatives to make a Deep Impact, take a moment and Send Your Name to
a Comet! This project will stop taking names in January of 2004.
