SPACE NEWS IN BRIEF

* The Civilian Space Exploration Team's 6.5m GoFast rocket is the
first private rocket to make it into space.

The GoFast rocket - named after one of the project's sponsors -
lifted off from the Black Rock Desert on Monday 17 May 2004. It was
witnessed by officials from the US Federal Aviation Administration.

* SpaceShipOne performed its 3rd Powered Flight on May 13th.
SpaceShipOne was built by aerospace pioneer Burt Rutan. It is
competing to win the Ansari X-prize of $10m (£5.7m) for the first
private flight into space.

* China plans to launch a Moon Rover in 2012 to follow the 2007 lunar
orbiter mission.

* Cassini will begin a four year main mission in orbit around Planet
Saturn when it will arrive on July 1, 2004. It will release the ESA
Huygens probe about six months later for descent through Titan's
thick atmosphere. the probe could impact in what may be liquid
methane ocean. Titan is the largest moon of Planet Saturn.

* The Ulysesses spacecraft mission has been extended until March
2008. This is the third time the joint ESA-NASA mission has been
extended. The third extension will enable Ulysses to further survey
the higher lattitude heliosphere. In 2007 and 2008, the European
built space probe will fly over the poles of the sun for the 3rd time.

* The Space Shuttle may return to flight in March 2005. The Columbia
Accident Investigation recommendations are being implemented. These
include preventing debris falling from the external tank, designing a
repair kit for patching damage in orbit and utilizing satellites to
check for damage after orbit.
