SPACE NEWS IN BRIEF
* Mars rovers (Spirit and Opportunity) maybe given another seven
months to explore the Red Planet. Spirit and Opportunity were given
an initial work phase of 90 Martian days.
Opportunity Rover is now about 10 to 12m inside the Endurance Crater.
Endurance Crater is a 130m-wide depression at Meridiani Planum on
Mars. The rover will continue to proceed deeper into the crater until
the gradient approaches 30 degrees, the limit at which scientists
think it will become difficult to back out of the crater. When it
gets out of the crater, it will examine the spacecraft's heat shield,
which is thought to have excavated a deep hole when it slammed into
Mars during descent.
Spirit Rover is currently still at the base of Columbia Hills. It is
due to proceed to about 30m up the hills and then hibernate to endure
the harsh Martian winter.
* Stephen Hawking has put forward a new theory that changes the way
scientists view black holes, saying he was wrong about them in the
past. He now believes that black holes may allow information to get
out.
* One of the Space Shuttle Main Engines that will carry the next
Space Shuttle into orbit has been successfully tested by engineers at
NASA's Stennis Space Center in Mississippi.
* The first Return to Flight Space Shuttle mission is designated STS-
114. It will use the Space Shuttle Discovery Orbiter. The launch date
will be on March 6, 2005 and will visit the International Space
Station.
* The follow-on Space Shuttle Mission after the Space Shuttle's
Return to Flight will be STS-121. Veteran astronaut Steven W. Lindsey
is the commander of STS-121 and Mark E. Kelly is the pilot.
STS-121 was added to the flight schedule to help accommodate the
growing list of requirements originally assigned to the Return to
Flight mission.
* Lockheed Martin has successfully performed a series of drop tests
at the U.S. Army Yuma Proving Ground in Yuma, Arizona to validate
soft landing technology that can be used for astronaut crew capsules
upon return to Earth.
Apollo capsules used water landings. The technology they are testing
could allow a future crew exploration vehicle to safely return the
crew to land, providing more flexibility in landing the crew and
making it more affordable.
See you in the next newsletter.
