Hi John;

Well, bookmarks is really there. Photos / Bookmarks / Database...

Other things.

Where are you all? On holyday??

Am in a little port, found an internet cafe (two computers, one
broken). Was at Texel island and saw the parrasana again. No flowers
now but a banana plantation growing there.
The bad smell of the flowers was a shit smell, anyway.

From the owner I got three cuttings of Sansevierias.
Volkensii, spec. Bally 12681 and aethiopica.
Will get some more later.
Anyone here interested also in this kind of plants?
Which group is interesting for these plants?

Will be back home tomorrow;
Kind regards,

Maarten

Hello Maarten

I am a danish girl on this list who is also interested in the
sansevierias.I also have some spare agaves, I have found out,
because I was searching my greenhouses these days, and found some I
can offer for those who want some.I will make a list of my spares
and you are more than welcome to write to me directly and ask for
what I have. But as I said before I have also a very big interest in
the sansevierias and maybe I also have some to exchange.

Kind regards Lotte.

Hello Lotte!

I have good experiences with swapping with Danish people, and also
good experiences with cooking for Danish school children making tours
in the Netherlands on sailig ships. (Once served them apple sauce and
they said they only eat that at Christmass...)

So: Pls send me yr swap list!

Parrasana flowering at Texel island.
Is it strange that this plant doesnt produce any offsets? I mean
after flowering?
I thouhgt that p. neomexicana did, but I may be wrong.

Kind regards,

Maarten

Dear All,
I posted a photo to the photos section called "jonathan's Agave to ID"
I picked up the bulbil lying on the ground in a garden in Spain. So
not an offset, but a bulbil. Can anyone ID it for me? I have already
had some help, a friend thinks it is vilmoriniana, and I wondered if
you could confirm this, as I understand that there are several species
that grow from bulbils only, not offsets. I planted it up and it
rooted quicker than anything I have ever seen. Planted at the same
time I have americana offsets (that I dug up) that are only just
starting to push roots. This roots of this bulbil now fill the pot!
Also, as mine live in an unheated greenhouse over winter in the UK,
does this one need to come inside?
Cheers
Jonathan

Looks like A.vivipara to me, more commonly known by the now defunct
name A.angustifolia. The flat thin leaves, small marginal teeth and
non-decurrent terminal spines are indicators. I too have picked up
several of these bulbils on my travels and must agree that they are
indeed fast growing for an Agave. A.vivipara is very common in Spain
and the Canaries where in some parts it is so prolific as an escapee
from cultivation. It is not very hardy, probably only to -4°C.
A.vilmoriniana has strongly recurved upright leaves when young,
later becoming Octopus like hence the common name 'Octopus Agave'.

There are only about 20 or so species of Agave that produce bulbils,
the great majority produce seed.

Hi Jonathan!

As I replied earlier to you, my opinion (& me not being a great agave
determinating specialist, just like to see them & make websites about
them) is thats it is a Sisanalae kind of thing.
Desmettiana? Sisalana??

Kind regards,

Maarten

Hi!

I have put several pics in a new album, MaartenAgaves.

Well, its not yet too good quality. Funny thing: the prints are OK,
the .jpg`s on the disk are a lot darker.
So: Photoshopped them. And will make better pics, now that I know the
camera a bit (and NOT on white background, and also of the larger
plants)
No copyright.

Yellowish cupreata in pic TwoCupreataSeedlings: on the pic the
central spike appears green but it isnt. Its yellow. Better pic soon
or see cupreata album in Fotki where I Photoshopped it more.

Pumila Cv: well, lets hear your comments.

Schidigera: "medio picta" lines clearly to be seen. Normal?

V-r hybrid: came as such from Rowland. Comments?

Parrasana neomexicana twin.

Schottii: shows "medio picta" lines on young leaves (elder leaves
darken). Normal?

Americana variegata alba (I hope, although one leaf shows marginata?
lines).

Stricta, showing the "armpit" offsets I was writing about.

V-r Himesan no yuki Will make better pic, but the half closed
sansevieria like leaves can be seen.

Sp Arizona A and B (might be the same plant).

Polyanthiflora, the famous one that came labeled as such from
Rowland. ??

Toumeyana toum. x 2: one with, one without filaments.

Striata striata X 2: one with, one without filaments. Is the one
without a str. str??

Macroculmis (I shall make a better pic soon).

Plus bonus! (which I shall remove soon). Beautifull Monbretia with
Lathyrus climbing in it, and a thing I dont know what it is; "Monks
cap"? Latin name?

(While uploading, was listening to Christa Ludwig, "Die linden Lüfte
sind erwacht" and "O wie schön ist deine Welt". Over and over again.)

Kind regards,

Maarten

Hi,Maarten and all.
1st. picture is of Agave parrasana that flowered last year, it is
producing a few offset. But produced more offsets as a young plant.
It does depend on which clone you have. Some of the bluer ones don't
offset so much as the greener ones.

2nd. Shows Agave victoriae-reginae miniture, 2 quite different forms.

Cheers for now. Geoff.

Thanks Geoff!

And did I already tell there is two new pics of the flowering
Parrasana in Photos > Parrasana?

And, because of our URL being published in CSSA journal, agave issue
(if it is, that is), I have for some weeks made the mssgs public (one
can read them, and bookmarks, but nothing else nor post or such).
Might you strongly disagree I shall change that.

Kind regards,

Maarten

Maarten,

Have you never seen a vivipara/angustifolia bulbil? I have collected
a good few and they definitely have floppy and rather wide leaves.
They gradually get more narrower and rigid with age. Angustifolia
bulbils differ from angustifolia offsets which have stiff narrow
leaves regardless of size, even if both are present on the same
parent plant.

I have uploaded a pic of 3 angustifolia young plants which were only
8cm bulbils 9 months ago, in the photos section. As you can see from
the pic they are now about 12 to 15 cms and still have rather wide
and floppy leaves. The parent plant is vivipara 11 and vivipara PFO
on fotki.

Hope this clarifies things for you.

Did you like the pics I posted recently which you have just added to
fotki? I would appreciate some feedback!!

Gary

OK Gary; thats what we are here for. To learn!
It is very interesting that bulbil plants are different from offsets
(and seedlings, because my vivipara seedlings have "angustifolia"
leaves (as far as not chopped of by the neigbours crow; it seems to
prefer vivipara)).

Thanks for your pics (posted with yr mssg I presume; shall see them
later) and thanks for yr earlier pics.
As you know, I always thank people for posting pics. No thanks mssg:
two possibillities: 1] mssg got lost, 2] I forgot.
But: thanks!

One more thing: I forgot (you posted a nigra) to take a pic of mine,
as promished. Shall do so tomorrow (& other pics), but since I shall
be away for a week or so do not expect them before say 10 days.

Kind regards,

Maarten

Hi Maarten and all.
Have put a few more pic in photo's.
I have met Jon Dudek. Will be visiting him 20th August. After I have
been to the British Cactus and Succulent Society Convention. Where I
am putting on a display about my NCCPG Agave collection.

Why is he not in the members bit. He's just what we need.

Just posted a couple of test photos of
Agaves taken in then Algarve last week.
More to follow as time allows. This is my
second visit and it remains a good place
for seeing good sized americanas growing
wild.

all the pics, Geoff and Agavesuk!

And thanks for the tip on the book; shall try to get it (I read
Spanish as I read Dutch, having lived in Spain for years and years).

Agavesuk: Can I put them in Fotki? And if so, with what copyright
line?

Got the about 60 pics I took before leaving yesterday, on disk. Will
try to find some Photoshopping time today and post them.
(Suppose everybody is on holyday since I got no comment at all on the
earlier posting of pics.:-(

Kind regards,

Maarten

Hi!

I have added some of the pics I took some days ago to the photo
section (MaartenAgaves).
(For the pics not mentioned here see mssg 823.)

Dont complain about the quality; I am learning.

Mckelveyana seedling: remember the one that started as a twin, then
took the looks of a cristata, then turned into a normal plant? Well
this just over one year old seedling is developing an offset. Suppose
its back to twin again.

Pumila Cv "better" pics (shall buy stronger tele one of these days): ?

V-r hybrid? Cv? 2 (leaf ends cut off) & 3: ?
v-r Himesan no yuki "better" pics

Pic garden: see anti crow net, protecting also against falling pears
and other nuisances. And raising the temperature underneath some 3
degrees C. In the foreground Eucomis, the "pine apple plant".

As far as Agaves I have put them all in Fotki (plus some other pics I
was sent).
See for "New".

Feel free to use my pics; no copyright, or "Copyricht Maarten van
Thiel, Tolbert, Netherlands, 2002", whatever you wish.

The three Sansevs I recently got are in AGAVACEAE (album Sansevieria)
as well as (album Maarten) a Calibanus hookeri (Doug Rowland: "The
untidiest plant on earth"), a Hesperaloe funifera seedling and an off
topic but lot alike Ornithogalum caudatum ("longibracteatum"); the
three strange Ascleps are in the Stapeliad group and my two Senecios
in the Senecio Succulents group.

Kind regards,

Maarten

Hi!

I have recently had good results (after customs refused some things) by
sending and receiving cuttings and such, sending them as
"Pad/cutting/seedling/... of Xxxxx xxxx
No soil, no roots
Disinfected with Oxyquinoline sulphate (brand names Superol or
Chinosol)"

Will give it a try with "Roots but no soil" too.

Kind regards,

Maarten

Roots but no soil should work good too. USDA has a list of materials that
plants can be packed in. I send plants to people with no soil and then the
roots are surrounded in slightly moist sphagnum moss and then wrapped with
aluminum foil. I forget what materials are allowed, but they should be able
to give you a list of what they are.

Hi!

I would like to obtain a (small/seedling) chrysantha. Mine was hit by a
falling pear and didnt survive.
(Could order one from Ariu but will try this first.)

Anyone here wants some Euphorbia caducifolia seeds? For free, with the
condition that if mine dont result Ill get a seedling back. They
apparently are difficult.

Kind regards,

Maarten

Hi!

Just have put several pics of seedlings (not too good quality; will need
a 300 lens for which I go on Thursday) in Fotki. See "New!"
Or see AgaveWeb > Cultivation > Seedlings a bit later tonight.

Kind regards,

Maarten

Hi folks;

I think I may have a problem with thrips on one of my more mature
varigated americanas. The symptoms appear as black blotches about 1
cm diameter on the leaf edges towards the center of the rosette. The
problem started last March in the greenhouse. I did notice some small
crawling insects light grey in colour about 3 mm long running about
on the leaves.
I have given the beasts a few doses of 'Ultimate Bug Killer' and
haven't seen any more since, but could be due the the wet weather
were having at the moment. The latest two new leaves to unfold are
unmarked.

Any ideas or further suggestions or links to information/pictures of
Thrips.

Thanks
Dave.

Hi!

I made a deal with a French plant dealer, he buying from me all
seedlings/offsets I have left over half September, making room.

See the list and reply if you wish somethimg (directly to new @ddress).
(I havnt
changed @ddress yet, no time, but pls use the new one although I might
answer from the old one.)

Slugs.
Slugs are a big problem where I live. For the plants in the garden, not
for Agaves.
You have several products here against weeds; chopped up wood, chopped
up bark. Since I am away many times I put these kind of things against
weeds in the garden.
But they also sell a similar product, the outside of cocoa seeds,
saying it helps against weeds AND snails/slugs. Applied that to a very
sluggy part of the garden yesterday. Seems to work. I mean: found a
slug, for the first time, on the agave seedlings. And no slug at all in
the sluggy part of the garden.

Counter-productive...

Kind regards,

Maarten
