What we did was, as I understand, CONWIP, whereas in kanban, you will have some non-zero WIP limits (technically, one could say CONWIP is a kanban with a constant WIP of 1 but everything else apart from it). However, I am also learning the ideas, specially kanban and scrumban (Corey Ladas new book with this title is available on lulu.com for last few months now). The iterationless, non-timeboxed concept is very different from the traditional Agile / Scrum, and I find it a great way to solve problems. What we did was swimlanes, but I think one could apply the same concepts for a feature crew also.
I will put those bullet points in a proper blog post and share the link here. Meanwhile, It would be great to learn from your, and other's, experiences using kanban.
