In my view measuring success on an agile project would be an ongoing thing throughout the project. The customer should be able to measure success of each iteration on the basis of business value delivered to him at the end of every iteration. This way he would be able to measure what he values success every iteration and fine tune it as and when required.
That being said as a customer I would be happy at the end of a project which was executed the agile way if
1. I got the business value that i envisioned from the project. 2. I was able to change course as per the business demands and get functionality delivered which makes more sense today.
3. I was able to give early feedback 4. I was able to prioritize the development of features/stories so that I got the right functionality at the right time 5. I was able to stop development before all the functionality was implemented because i realized that I got all the functionality that I wanted and rest of the functionality might never be used.
6. I trusted the development team and the trust relationship was vice versa 7. Impediments were raised frequently as and when they happened and I worked with the team to resolve them. 8. I got no surprises during the project.
9. I got peace of mind because every iteration gave me results and I knew i was in control. 10. I got value for money :)

Chetan, I
think it's great you're doing PhD-level research on agile development, there's not enough of that going on, imo. Looking very briefly at the survey, I think it could use a thorough proofread for spelling and grammar, and I think the data you derive will be more useful if you can design your questions to be more specific (for example: in the last question on page 2, you need to define what you mean by small / medium / big project size). Try going through each question, and each response, and asking yourself "What are all the different ways of interpreting this question/answer?", and then try to remove as much of that ambiguity as possible. You might be able to find someone to help you do this by posting a call for help to this or another of the agile lists.
Yeah, I hate sloppy work too; it drives me nuts when someone produces
something that's obviously flawed, and with a little more work could
have made it so much better.
In my opinion, how you respond is determined by your intent. If your
intent is simply to speak the most harsh truth possible, you might say
"you sir, are a blithering idiot!". the problem with that is the person
who hears the statement will not *hear* the statement; their ears will
close, as everyone's does when they hear sharp criticism. You've become
their adversary; they'll think "Oh, that person has an axe to grind
about surveys, he doesn't know what he's talking about, they don't like
me." If your intent is to radically improve the outcome -- both improve
the quality of the work produced, and also improve the skills /
understanding of the individual so they can do better in the future --
in my experience you get much better results if you make sure the person
feels like you're on their side, that your goal is not to "put them in
their place", but to actually help them succeed. You're not an
adversary, you're an ally. This doesn't mean hide the truth from them;
it means to present it very honestly but in a way that they'll really
hear it, and hopefully take it to heart. I'm not saying you can't get
improvement by berating someone -- but in my experience, you get much
much more improvement if you can find a way to give feedback
constructively and respectfully; and if that person is a colleague or
employee, you'll earn a lot of loyalty in the process. (If anyone's
interested in reading more, there's a great book called "Conscious
Business" by Fred Kofman that provides a lot of hands-on tips for things
like this.)

Hi All,
Anurag kudos to you for the initiative. Well, I feel North is still far
away from The Agile Way and
not many IT professionals know about Agile. Although the term Agile is famous
but knowledge is by far missing and events like this will help a lot. Some
projects have evolved practices which are Lean/agile due to pressure from
demanding clients, but there are lot more benefits to be reaped. By far most
organisations have processes around waterfall and a clear recipe for disaster(too
much documentation which never gets updated). On the contrary some
organisations(won't like to name) have mandated Agile practices and have
become so stringent about complete Agile adoption that the entire agility
is lost in process. They are trying to run on Agile way like a horse with
blinds.
>> We feel that the
user groups are a great way to share Agile knowledge locally in our region
instead of getting it via US or Europe. Let
remove the blinds of this Agile ‘horse’
Well, we need to target the top management for this event. Atleast all
the IT CEO's and leadership needs to be made aware. A session for
leadership during this conference is desirable and we invite them especially
for this session as its tough to get the leadership for one full day.
>> If you can
come with a relevant Agile agenda for CEOs then we can a leadership forum in
this conference otherwise they are welcome as a participant in all sessions.
I also feel that Noida is ignored. Some major IT giants like CSC, HCL
have their presence here. And even some product companies(where agile makes a
lot more sense) like LG, Samsung, Nucleus have offices in Noida.
>> Everyone is
welcome even the people working outside India. Please help us circulate this
word to all the companies in Noida so that they can join.
One more thing, some time back we had a active NASSCOM QUALITY forum.
QA leaders from across the organisations used to participate. Avinash Raghava
(NASSCOM) used to co-ordinate this event. I can share his email id. Avinash
has a good database of IT professionals in NCR.
>> Sure please
send me his e-mail address.
Looking forward to the updates from this group on Agile in NCR.
>> I am wondering if you can

Filling up the presentation slots. If there is a need
we can add an extra track. Call for speakers will follow.

Publicity of this conference in industry and academia
Help in registration of delegates
Publicity Material and Logistics
Sponsorships ( Any Ideas )
Go-No Go Criteria
Suggest what you would like to hear in this conference
for example:
Few questions:
1. Can we make it a 2 day event instead of a one day event? The schedule looks
very compressed. Like 20 mins for keynote, 20 mins for break, 50 mins for
parallel track talks. My experience has been that its better to keep good break
between the sessions. They act as buffers and help us stay on track. >> We want to start with 1
day event since we are not sure about the kind of response we will get in terms
of speakers and participants in NCR. 1 day event will save night stay and other
hassles. For us it will be the first major Agile event in NCR.
>> If the agenda
is tight, we can have three parallel tracks and/or stretch the conference by
one more hour.
>> At this
moment, the host AIT is also in favour of having one day event.
2. Looks like the technical tracks won't have hands on
sessions, since we don't have labs. Is this true? >> It will be difficult to
have hand-on sessions in the time slots of 50 minutes but we are thinking of
having an XP planning game.
>> Perhaps we
can do tutorial/labs next day but only if there is interest.
3. Do you want me to take care of the website (thru ASCI
site)? Or you plan to have a separate website?
>> It will be
good if we use ASCI site. It will nice if we can use ready made registration
facility.
4. Do you plan to have some registration fee? >> Do not know. Perhaps a
small fee of Rs 1000 will be appropriate.
Theme: Embrace Uncertainty!
Embrace Change is old, Uncertainty is the new mantra. >> Good! Any other ideas folks
Sponsorship:
ASCI can completely sponsor event.
>> Thanks and
sounds good.
>> I would like
also industry to showcase themselves during conference by paying a sponsorship.

Hi All,
I had a
good discussion with Dr Yadav of AIT yesterday. It appears that we can have our
conference on 1st March 2008 or 7th March 2008 and not

We will
finalize upon one of these dates once AIT has decided on a suitable date. AIT
has a nice campus on the foothills of Aravali in Gurgaon. Next week they are
organizing an international conference on nano technology. We can use the
‘freshly painted’ conference facility at AIT for Agile Conference too.
The Agile
Conference will be a day long on a Saturday. Here is my skeleton proposal for
the program.

It will be good idea
to have an experience report. Please send me the title and abstract of your
idea. I think there is a good interest in the topic of Agile and CMMi comparison.
We can have a session on it as well.
Please send me the
titles so that I can start filling up various slots in the seminar.

Hi Anurag,
From my experience, many companies (product or services) are shifting to using
Agile methodologies. However there still are some requirements/metrics that
they all need to gather/track to report for upper management. A very
interesting topic for presentation would be present how a particular company is
meshing these seeming two disconnected worlds, on one side is agile which does
not believe in things like timesheets and on the other side is need for
management dashboards.
I would be happy to present this at the conference based on real customer
experience. (May be even have some representative from that company Subex Azure
join me) Let me know if this is something that would interest you and the
audience at the conference.
Alternatively I can also talk about Agile and CMMi as our tool support both.
You can check my background/profile on our web site management team page here.

Few questions: 1. Can we make it a 2 day event instead of a one day event? The schedule looks very compressed. Like 20 mins for keynote, 20 mins for break, 50 mins for parallel track talks. My experience has been that its better to keep good break between the sessions. They act as buffers and help us stay on track. 2. Looks like the technical tracks won't have hands on sessions, since we don't have labs. Is this true? 3. Do you want me to take care of the website (thru ASCI site)? Or you plan to have a separate website? 4. Do you plan to have some registration fee?
Theme: Embrace Uncertainty! Embrace Change is old, Uncertainty is the new mantra.

Hi All,
I had a good discussion with Dr Yadav of AIT yesterday. It
appears that we can have our conference on 1st March 2008 or 7th
March 2008 and not earlier
We will finalize upon one of these dates once AIT has decided
on a suitable date. AIT has a nice campus on the foothills of Aravali in
Gurgaon. Next week they are organizing an international conference on nano
technology. We can use the freshly painted conference facility at AIT for
Agile Conference too.
The Agile Conference will be a day long on a Saturday. Here
is my skeleton proposal for the program.
9:30 10:00
Opening
Plenary Session
10:00 to 10:20
Keynote Speech
10:30 to 11:30
Presentation -1 (P1)
11:40 to 12:40
Presentation -2 (P2)
12:40 to 1:50
Lunch
Parallel Sessions
Technical Track
Management Track
2:00 to 2:50
T1
M1
3:00 to 3:50
T2
M2
3:50 to 4:10
Break
4:10 to 5:00
T3
M3
5:10 to 6:00
Panel Discussion
6:00 to 6:30
Closing
Technical track will be for those who are interested in the
tools and techniques while the management track will be for those who are
interested in the process and management.
Many people have said that they want to contribute. I would
like to write down here what we are looking for so that you can choose and
pick:
Suggest a suitable theme or
catch phrase for Agile Conference
Filling up the presentation
slots. If there is a need we can add an extra track. Call for speaker will
follow.
Suggestions and contact for a
keynote speaker
Publicity of this conference
in industry and academia
Help in registration of
delegates
Publicity Material and
Logistics
Sponsorships ( Any Ideas )
Go-No Go Criteria
Suggest what you would like to
hear in this conference for example:
Experience Report
Demo of tools
XP Games
Distributed Agile
Agile and CMM
Kindly feel free to add more to this list since I would
like to improve the agenda and the quality of conference with your support.

In case you missed this event don't be sad. Sanjiv Augustine contacted me saying he would be in India next month and would like to do some free workshops for ASCI. Watch out for more details.

I would like to

Dr A. K. Yadav

I would like to

Feb 1st and

The number of days
depends upon the topics and speakers, we can get.
Kindly let me know if
any of these dates are ok. Please also account for 3-4 coordination meetings
that shall take place between now and the conference date, if you decide to volunteer.

January/February. The conference will be one/two days depending upon the
response and speakers.
So far the Agile User Group activities in NCR are not as
intense as we have in South and West India so
let’s use this opportunity to propagate Agile.
Perhaps a good time for the conference would be 1st/2nd
week of February.
Kindly let me know if you would like to volunteer and
support this effort in some ways.
Hi, we will definitely add your friend to the list. If anyone else has
had trouble with email bounces, feel free to email me directly:
