I've already got the same room booked for the 16th Jan. It's available anytime after 5pm.

Murray, David, Are you planning to run another dojo this month? And if so, Katie, can we use the UCLan facilities again please?
I'm assuming the date will be Jan 16th too... Cheers, Kevin

We can carry on from where we left off, assuming David can supply a setup laptop (and himself of course).

Unfortunately, David and his pre-setup laptop will not be there on the 19th,
so the Dojo may not be possible.
I assume that we are NOT having a meeting on Monday 19th December
I would prefer NOT too, but Phran suggested that the dojo had gone so well last month that there WAS interest for December...
which just leaves trying to decide on a date in January to have the first meetup of 2006.
The "scheduled" date is Jan 16th - ie. the third Monday of the month,
as usual. Followed by Feb 20th, March 20th, April 17th, ...
Mondays were chosen a while ago by consensus, and although I guess the
make-up of the group is different now, can we try to retain some
regularity?
Cheers,
Kevin

19th Dec is a non teaching week for the Uni - the room will be available no probs - I'll even sort out security so that they don't bug you like last night!
I'll be in sunny(!) Spain, but can still get someone to sort out tea/coffee and biccys!
If you're doing another dojo in January, do you fancy recording it? Anyone taking part would get a copy of the recording that they could use for training purposes etc. Let me know what you think.

I'm happy with Dec 19th.
I think we agreed last night that the next one would also be in
Preston so that we could continue the coding & design of last night's
kata.
Once we know the date of the next meetup I'll contact Katie to see if
we can get the same (rather excellent) room booked.

All,
Sorry I couldn't make it - sounds like you had a great evening!
I went to a Dojo last week, run by the concept's originators from the
Paris XP group (Laurent Bossavit, Christophe Thibaut and Emmanuel
Gaillot). I blogged a bit about it at http://silkandspinach.net/blog/2005/11/reflections_on.html
Hope to be at the next AgileNorth dojo,
Cheers,
Kevin

To: BCS SPA in the north-west; AgileNorth
Subject: [spa-nw] Next AgileNorth meeting on Monday November 21st
All,
I'm pleased to announce the details and new location of the November
AgileNorth meetup.
It's on Monday November 21st at 7pm and the topic is "The Game of Life
Kata" hosted by Murray Tait and David Draper. and will be hosted in
the computing department of the University of Central Lancashire,
Preston.
So what is a code kata?
"A kata is an exercise in karate where you repeat a form many, many
times, making little improvements in each. The intent behind code kata
is similar. Each is a short exercise (perhaps 30 minutes to an hour
long). Some involve programming, and can be coded in many different
ways. Some are open ended, and involve thinking about the issues
behind programming. These are unlikely to have a single correct
answer."
Quoted from Dave Thomas' blog
(http://blogs.pragprog.com/cgi-bin/pragdave.cgi/Practices/Kata)
What will we be doing in this session?
We need to have katas that exercise agile practices. Perhaps the
easiest agile practice to use is the "acceptance test". Murray &
David will introduce the problem space (which is "Conway's Game of
Life" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conway's_Game_of_Life), then pick
two participants to "pair program" a solution. After a rhythm has
been established, pairs will be swapped for new developers, and
repeated every ten minutes. Sound interesting?
Where is the new location?
Katie Taylor, a senior lecturer in Agile Development at the University
of Central Lancashire, Preston has kindly offered a lecture room for the
evening that includes tables, chairs, and the 'all important'
projector/screen and whiteboards.
It's in room CM018 in the Computing & Technology building, marked as
'CM' on the map (http://www.uclan.ac.uk/guide2/maps/newmap.htm).
There is parking available for at least 50 cars (in car parks 1 & 10).
For alternative maps please visit:
http://www.uclan.ac.uk/guide2/maps/index.htm
The room is available a little before 7pm, so if you want to show up
early to get some work done, or chat with other members then please do
so.
To get a better idea where the University is please take a look at the
this Google map which shows the Uni location, Preston city centre and

numbers than that would be great. Looking forward to it, hope you are
too!

All,
Those of you who are practicing agile methods might be interested in CSM training in Manchester this month! Check out http://www.scrumeducation.com/scrumedu/Class/id~11
for details. (I have no relationship with the course provider,
btw.) I took CSM training earlier this year, and the course was
well worth the money, and very relevant to my day-to-day job; so I can
recommend it...

business requirements on time. The software development challenge is to
support the DSDM process and meet many technical requirements such as
robustness, scalability, performance, maintainability, security,
architectural coherence and technical correctness. Software Factory concepts
address the complexity involved in software development through reuse and
automation. Software Factories deliver the business and technical
requirements much more predictably, support iterative methods and eliminate

reality of projects which need to use PRINCE2 to satisfy the governance
requirements of the organisation, but need to take an iterative approach to
development. And, of course, we must not fail to deliver on time. Dorothy Tudor: TCC

The Facilitator' - Say Hasta La Vista To Late Project Delivery.
A real facilitated workshop is much more than simply a meeting with coffee
and post-its! Professionally facilitated workshops are the essence of
successful delivery within compressed timeframes and the best way to cope
with those speeding timeboxes. Prioritising requirements, timebox planning
and product creation become energetic workshops with prolific results. This
presentation provides an insight into how the use of a structured process and
cultivated skills ensure that your workshop is planned, prepared, managed and
delivered effectively. Juliet Munro:

Interactive Workshop: Team Dynamics, Process,
Blame! Can you improve the process you use for projects? Have you
considered variations? Do you look back at your projects and evaluate the
role the process played? This activity based workshop will challenge your
thinking and get you to come at things from new angles. But there is more to
life than process - what about team dynamics. What role does this play in
improving a process? And then what happens when it doesn't go to plan - who
do you blame! This workshop will hopefully come up with some answers! Keith Richards

All,
Following our very successful 1-day conference a few weeks ago, we are
now consolidating the group's mailing lists. We have decided to
move this list to Yahoo, and so we have a new mailing list agilenorth@yahoogroups.com.
The [spa-nw] list will be retired after the next meeting, which is
scheduled for November 21st. (The mailing list on the
agilenorth.org.uk website is already dead, and will not be resurrected
even after we have a new hosting service.) So if you wish to
continute to receive news of agile events in this area, please
subscribe to agilenorth@yahoogroups.com.
