Hey folks,

Lean and "Lean Startups" are all the rage these days.  I was wondering if there were any members of this group or people you know in the Philly area who were working in/aspiring toward a lean startup, and whether there were any meetups/groups surrounding that topic specifically?

Are there people on this list that would be interested in such a group, if there isn't one already?

Thanks!

Brian

My current company (mostly an XP shop) has been trying to go more lean, and I've been reading/participating in the Lean Startup group set up by Eric Ries for a while now.  I think it would be a good topic for an Agile Philly event. I think that Agile includes the Lean Startup ideas--I don't think we need a separate group to discuss it. Do others think it should be its own group?

I would agree with Andre that Lean belongs within AgilePhilly.

Perhaps as a sub-group with roundtable discussions,
like a Lean Sub-Committee Roundtable or "Knights of the Lean Roundtable"

They may want a different structure and something besides a set presentation each month.
I would envision that Agile continue to have a main meeting, usually being a presentation,

And then AgilePhilly also would have it's splinter groups - that do Code Katas on another night, and a Lean Roundtable group that meets on yet another night.
(That is what my local PC club does.  This structure allows for general information, but also specialization. http://www.extonPC.org

Note that the MLMUG MainLine Mac U.G. has a single meeting each month that combines all on a Saturday morning each month . . .
Main meeting, then splinter into different groups for an hour, then reconvene as a main meeting for the final hour which is the presentation.  That is what an all-day AgilePhilly Saturday AgileTour or OpenSpace meeting might look like.    ( http://www.MLMUG.org )

Hi André and John,

I definitely think the concepts are worth talking about within AgilePhilly as well, and I follow André's blog so I know you've been reading and working with Lean ideas, which I think will add greatly to the group conversation when you get back in town :)

On the other hand, if there is enough interest from people that are specifically interested in Lean Startup ideas, and are either looking to become entrepreneurs or already on their way, I think a more focused meetup might provide a lot of value.

I've seen similar discussions in several local communities (most recently the Philly Lambda group, where some members wanted to start a Scala-specific group).  I think this type of diversity is good for the community as a whole, and it certainly doesn't mean users in X group will now no longer participate in Y group.  In fact, both will likely benefit in terms of new speakers, topic ideas, etc that "bubble up" from focused groups and are of interest to more general groups, etc.

I've also seen it firsthand :)  I started Philly ALT.NET as a more focused .NET software development user group than the much larger and broader Philly.NET, and I've worked with them from day one to incorporate our speakers/topics/ideas into their code camps and meetings, and it's benefitted us both.

The only downside I see is that there are so many interesting groups and so little time :)

Brian,

I'm currently working at a very lean startup:
- About 3 months old
- Agile development
- Frequent demos to customers/investors
- Amazon cloud-based Linux servers
  - No physical server in the office -- only laptops, wireless

- FOSS platform and components:
Linux, Groovy/Grails, Spring,
JSON-based RESTful Web services via Jersey JAX-RS, MongoDB,
  Tomcat, JavaScript, Ajax, jQuery, etc.
- FOSS tools: Eclipse, Firebug, MediaWiki, Git, JIRA, JUnit,

That sounds very cool!  Are you familiar with Lean Startup methods?  While I've been learning about Lean, Theory of Constraints, and other ideas (esp.how they relate to software development) for a couple years now, the Lean Startup community is specifically interested in applying these ideas to new business development, particularly customer and market development, and have a lot of very interesting approaches to starting a business that resonate with what I've learned from agile, lean, and other areas.  There is a Google Group led by one of the leaders in the community, Eric Ries, at http://groups.google.com/group/lean-startup-circle

There are other cities with groups dedicated to this particular way of running a startup, one of which several friends of mine in Austin are involved in.  That's sort of where this idea is coming from :)

One of the books that is often listed as required reading is The Four Steps to Epiphany, about finding an idea, and developing customers.  I haven't read about the ideas, but want to very soon.

Sebastian - I was thinking about a book club as I wrote that last email.  That would be great!  Scheduling is probably the biggest challenge.   I wonder if you/others would be open to doing a virtual lunch meeting (or actual lunch meeting if possible, but our area is rather large)?  We could use skype or another tool.  This might allow us to move faster, for example meet weekly.  If we do virtual, we could mix in an in-person meetup if/when possible.

Cool, sounds like there is enough interest to get this started.  I created another list so we don't spam this one with details about organizing the book group, etc:

Anyone is welcome to join if they are interested in the book (The Four Steps to Epiphany, by Steven G. Blank)  and we'll figure out scheduling over there.

Hi Guys,

We would like to host another Agile Philly code kata night at the Math
Forum. We might try some of the architecture katas that I learned
about at Uber conf, or if there is not too much interest in that then
we can do some katas from http://codekata.pragprog.com/

The Math Forum is at 3210 Cherry Street, close to 30th street station.

Either a Monday or Tuesday night would work for us. If you are
interested in coming could you vote for a date on this doodle
calendar? http://doodle.com/cgvqdinfyn5g65d6

Thanks!

Audrey,

Thanks for hosting this! I would be interested in doing one of the architecture katas from Uber conf.

Maybe we could do 2 exercises? Time box an architecture kata and do a coding exercise?

Cheers,
Sebastian

Agile Philly--

I'm toying around with a new business model, and would love to get some feedback from potential real clients. So for early adopters, I'd come onsite sometime in the next two weeks and do some free agile coaching for your teams. Anyone interested?

(I do have other work lined up soon, but have a bit of idle time now.)

For info, what I'm working on is a long-term coaching package on a subscription basis--I don't know what the pricing would be, so it could easily move to half or double this ballpark figure--but it would be around $150/month per team member.

Hi all,

I've been working with JB Rainsberger on a new workshop that will teach three techniques that business folks and technical folks can use to work together more effectively. This isn't an advertisement for that class, but rather a request for a venue.

As a practical and intensive workshop, we need space for 12-14 people to break off into 4 groups with whiteboards or easel pads, and a clear wall for a projector. As folks who came out to the Theory of Constraints talk will remember, hands-on activities can get a bit crowded in the Algorithmics conference room, so if anyone knows of a space, or has access to a space, that will accommodate these activities, please let me know. We can offer compensation in good will, comps for a pair, or if necessary, cash.

Thanks,

Congratulations! Should be an awesome party =)

Unfortunately, Indy Hall only has the one conference room, and at the last TEDxPhilly meeting it was stretched at 10 people. Which is too bad, because I love the space.

Thanks!

QConSF Conference Invitation

Dear Agile Philly member,

As a software development professional we thought you'd want to know about the third annual QConSF Conference Nov 18-21 an enterprise software development conference with 80 technical sessions (Nov 3-5) and 2 days of tutorials (Nov 1-2).

We have arranged a special discount for AgilePhilly subscribers of an additional $50 off when you use the discount code "AgilePhilly" when you register for the conf.

The talks at QCon are chosen by folks just like you, resulting in over 80 sessions by key luminaries on interesting topics such as the following highlights:

Kanban - Crossing the line, pushing the limit or rediscovering the agile vision?

This session will explore how Kanban and LPD differ from traditional agile methods and how these differences can be used to find real solutions to real problems in situations where traditional methods fall short. We will also go through a series of steps that show when and how some practices can be dropped and how a team might benefit from it.

Big Ball of Mud: Is This the Best that Agile can Do?

This talk will examine the paradoxes that underlie Big Balls of Mud, what causes them, and why they are so prominent. What Agile Practices help us avoid or cope with mud? Does Agile practices such as TDD really help minimize mud? What are we doing RIGHT? What Agile Practices contribute to the problem? Encourage mud? Is Mud really the best that Agile can do? Is Agility's utilitarian focus on process rather than design its secret weapon, or its Achilles heel?

Some of this year's 80+ speakers include:

Dan Ingalls
Dan Ingalls
The principal architect of five generations of Smalltalk environment
Patrick Copeland
Patrick Copeland
Google Dir of Engineering; Saved Google 700 engineering years
Michael Nygard

Author of "Release It!"

Martin Fowler

Loud-mouth on Object Design
Dan North
Dan North
Agile troublemaker, developer, originator of BDD
Rebecca Wirfs-Brock
Rebecca Wirfs-Brock
Inventor of Responsibility-Driven Design

Doing the Impossible at IMVU Inc: Deploying to Production 50 Times a Day

This talk will cover the theory behind why shipping more frequently will make deployment dramatically better while enabling an entirely new level of agility at your organization. Of course theory is great in theory, so this talk will also cover the specific implementation at work in IMVU Inc, and talk to what scalability issues we've had to solve to make Continuous Deployment work with a 50 person technical staff.

Keeping Agile Agile

Dan argues that best practices are useful only up to a point, and that rigidly enforcing them is counter to the values of Agile and will eventually drive away your best people. He looks at the motivations behind Agile initiatives and introduces the Dreyfus model of skills acquisition to explore how effective best practices really are.

On Nov 1st and 2nd, QCon hosts 2 days of tutorials prior to the conference. These are full day sessions offering deep dives on the following topics:

We hope you can join us for this year's QCon San Francisco.Register before September 30th and save up to $400. We have arranged a special discount for AgilePhilly subscribers of an additional 50$ off when you use the discount code "AgilePhilly". Group discounts are available!

The next meeting of Philly SPIN - the Software Process Improvement Network - whom we have had many joint meetings with - has an interesting September meeting.

September 22, 2010 6-8PM at Analytical Graphics, Inc in Exton PA.

TOPIC: Quality and Productivity Metrics in Agile Development presented by Jim Schiel, CEO Artisan Software Consulting LLC

In most implementations of Agile Development, there is a need to 1) ensure that product quality is at least maintained if not enhanced by the use of Agile methods and practices and 2) identify an appropriate way to measure team performance in a manner consistent with and supportive of Agile principles. In this presentation, we will look at implementations of Scrum with XP practices and review how to set high-quality criteria for your team within the context of the Scrum framework. We will also look at metrics that will give you a way to realistically measure Scrum team performance and what to do with those metrics once you have them!

6:00 - 6:30 Check-in, light dinner, and networking
