This month's meeting is tomorrow!
Experience Report on Agile QA -- Luis Zhinin

Luis will discuss his experience with Agile-QA within the IVR industry.  He has worked on several IVR projects which were mostly waterfall process oriented.  He will discuss the fun and challenges of going from  QA leading waterfall IVR projects to QA leading a (Comcast) Agile IVR project

For those interested in QA topics in an Agile environment, this is a great resource for comparison of various models and their effect on quality.

Meeting Date: Weds July 20th
Meeting Time: 5:30pm to 8:30pm - - Note the meeting time when we start mingling  - Since it is off the PA Turnpike at the Ft Washington Exit or the Virginia Drive Slip-Lane, these may be easy commute for many of our members to attend.

Meeting Place: DeVry University, Fort Washington campus, Room 105 in the main building. Go up the drive and through the main entrance (with flags). Signs will point the way!

http://maps.google.com/maps?q=1140+Virginia+Drive,+Fort+Washington,+PA&hl=en&sll=40.040577,-75.199206&sspn=0.007705,0.013797&z=16

An RSVP at our website would be a big help!  http://www.agilephilly.com/events/experience-report-on-agile-qa

Tues, August 2nd meeting of Agile Philly is . . .

Not a joint meeting, but a co-located one.

Which gives you the opportunity to experience and experiment in different areas.

The location is Temple University, and it is an agile experiment for the AgilePhilly User Group/

This is a pilot of sorts for setting up recurring, monthly, multi-group

events where several groups can meet up in the same building, mingle, and

then have separate talks in separate rooms.

Additionally, it is expected to simplify the task of organizing our user group(s),

and more importantly, it encourages mingling with other groups and cross-fertilization of ideas.

This month's Agile topic is Rolling out Agile to a Large Fortune 500 Corporation (Best Buy)

presented by Dan Koch

http://www.agilephilly.com/xn/detail/3783271:Event:13613    to RSVP

In the next room, Philly Alt Net will have Brian Flanagan talking about the

Knockout.js framework which provides and MVC model for client-side

javascript.  The knockout.js framework (http://knockoutjs.com/ ) is a new JavaScript

framework that allows you to create a richer web application using clean,

concise JavaScript and HTML 5

If you would rather go to this, then RSVP at

http://phillyaltnet-aug2011.eventbrite.com/

YOU DO NOT NEED TO RSVP TO BOTH !

Location:  Temple University Center City Campus

1515 Market St

Philadelphia, PA 19102

Map  http://bit.ly/nZCO7r

Time:

5:30 - Greet and Eat and Mingle

6:30 - Knockout.js - Brian Flanagan

-or-

Hi folks,

1. TOMORROW, Saturday 9/10/11, the Philly Day of Agile, which is still taking reservations.

2. WEDNESDAY, AgilePhilly meeting as part of the Multi-Usergroup Meetings, at DeVry University in Fort Washington, 5:30-9pm. Helen Muth will be speaking, and the title of her talk is Agile/Scrum for embedded software.

3. Tuesday, 9/20/11, AgilePhilly Coding Night as part of the Multi-Usergroup Meetings, at the Municipal Services Building, 1417 JFK Blvd. in Philly, 5:30-8:30pm.

4. Wednesday, 10/12/11, AgilePhilly Discussion Topic, as part of the Multi-Usergroup Meetings, probably at DeVry in Fort Washington, 5:30-9pm.

6. Tuesday, 10/18/11, AgilePhilly Discussion Topic tba, as part of the Multi-Usergroup Meetings, in a Center City location tba.

ALSO, THE SCHEDULE:
In general, AgilePhilly meetings will now be on the 2nd Wednesday and the 3rd Tuesday of the month. For the remainder of 2011, here is the schedule:

September
3rd Tues: 9/20/11 Center City (coding night)
October
2nd Weds:10/12/11 DeVry(coding night)
3rd Tues: 10/18/11 Center City (discussion topic)

November
2nd Weds:11/16/11 DeVry (discussion topic)
3rd Tues: 11/22/11 Center City (coding night)
December
1st Tues: 12/6/11 Center City (discussion topic)

The idea is that in being more predictable about dates and locations, we'll make it easier for people to come to meetings. The idea of holding the Multi-Usergroup meetings is that people will be able to network with a wider range of people, thus increasing their reach.

Hope to see you at an AgilePhilly event soon!

Beware the copyright notice of this book. You MUST purchase your own individual copy if you want to read this book. You cannot read this book without having purchased it - not even over someone else's shoulders or by borrowing someone else's Kindle. You cannot resell it (even if you remove it from your Kindle). Is this sort of restriction even legal? I can understand a restriction on copying, but not on lending, selling or reading on someone else's Kindle. I will NOT be buying such a restricted book.

Hi all,
Tuesday 10/18/11 is going to be a great evening. Not only will you get to hear from your AgilePhilly colleagues about what they're most excited about, you'll also get to network with other great local techies from PHASE, Philly Hacks/Hackers, and Philly ALT.NET. And there will be delicious food! What could be better?
For anyone unfamiliar with the term Lightning Talk, here is the basic concept:
  • 6 people talk about what they're working on & excited about for 5-10 minutes each
  • everyone breaks out into small groups based on what they're interested in talking about at more length
  • everyone learns from each other & has a goodtime
You could be one of the speakers! If you've got something you'd like to share, please contact me ASAP and I'll put you on the speakers list.
I'm looking forward to hearing from you soon.

This talk is especially good for solo entrepreneurs, but it is also great for anyone with expenses, debt, or money worries. I have learned so much from Chellie, and I encourage you to call me if you want to hear about it.
This is an event for anyone in AgilePhilly or any other usergroup, or anyone you know in your life who would like to not only feel more positive about money, but actually figure out how to earn more. Including how to network more effectively at meetings ;)

Recently our attendance has been dwindling; are you only interested in hearing from the rock star consultants / published agile authors?Or is there something else you're waiting for?

In the past, we've had lots of voices chiming in regularly telling us what consultants might be available for an evening event because that consultant happened to be doing work for their company--but that hasn't been happening lately. So we've been inviting people we think have a compelling story or something interesting to say. Is that valuable to you?

What could we do to better serve your needs? Fewer events? A coaches' corner for free advice? More advanced topics? Which ones?

my gut reaction to the past couple of months...

There seemed to be a flurry of multiple things to do each week, for many
weeks in one month.

is this my imagination, or was there a ton of scheduled events?

maybe too many choices meant that folks picked none?

also, much like a book/beer/wine club amongst friends... when it is
always the "4th Wednesday of the month" people can plan accordingly. If
it moves around and there are 2, 3, 4 events in a month, what is a
person to do?

Personally, i like the opportunities to learn from others in the group,
especially coding stuff.

First I'll say that I agree with Jon's comments.  I would like a regularly scheduled meeting (that doesn't conflict with JUG and SPIN), so that I can plan ahead.

I attend JUG, SPIN, and AgilePhilly and need to limit how many times I'm out for stuff like this.  So I pick the best of the month.  I look for good speakers, topics where I'll learn something that I might be able to utilize, on a convenient day for me and reasonably close to home.  So, for example, I don't attend meetings in Philadelphia.  In terms of AgilePhilly, I've heard a bunch of people talk about Scrum and why agile is good.  I haven't heard too much about Lean (except recently at a SPIN meeting) and practical things Scrum practioners can do to incorporate Lean (or Kanban, or Systems Thinking, or other non-Scrum methodologies).  What's new in the OpenSource world for Agile, for those of us, whose company won't fund proprietary tools?  A demo about how to fully utilize Eclipse for refactoring might be interesting (things beyond extract method, and other simple stuff).

Recently our attendance has been dwindling; are you only interested in hearing from the rock star consultants / published agile authors? Or is there something else you're waiting for?

In the past, we've had lots of voices chiming in regularly telling us what consultants might be available for an evening event because that consultant happened to be doing work for their company--but that hasn't been happening lately.  So we've been inviting people we think have a compelling story or something interesting to say. Is that valuable to you?

What could we do to better serve your needs?  Fewer events? A coaches' corner for free advice? More advanced topics? Which ones?

Hi all,

I generally agree with Mark's comments.  I come to Agile Philly events 2-3 times/year. My #1 reason for participating is learning something I can use in my job and career.  My #2 reason is the camaraderie of talking with other participants.  I practice Scrum every day.  I would like more discussions of Agile practices that complement Scrum.  Having social/networking time before and after the structured session is a good idea too.

In my company, I am evangelizing software quality and testing practices to our scrum teams. If people are interested, I would be pleased to lead a session on this topic.

I live and work in Wilmington.  The Malvern-KOP-Conshohoken axis works for me, and I am willing to drive to Center City too.

If there were a regular day of the month, I would put a recurring meeting in my Google calendar and be less like to schedule a conflicting activity.

Chris

Well, on at least on one point we can fix something *yesterday*:

For the last couple of months we've been following the formula that we meet on 2nd Wednesdays (suburbs) and 3rd Tuesdays (downtown). There are sometimes special events on top of this schedule.

The other things I'm hearing is that it's nice to mix it up between coding & practices, and that we'd like to talk more about enhancing Scrum with additional ideas from Lean/Kanban/etc.

Please keep the ideas coming, everyone. Thanks!!!

My two cents...

I attended my first Agile Philly meeting to learn more about Selinium and testing because it was an area I was exploring for my team.  I have since attended to see how other groups do Agile and SCRUM.  I would be interested in learning more about how Lean is combined with Agile.

I also attend the PMI DVC meetings and I often run into project managers who say they are trying Agile but are having problems.  Is that an area where we can advertise our meetings or even present at a PMI meeting?

As long as the meetings are advertised about 3 weeks out, I have enough lead time to see if I can attend.

Regards,
Helen

Straight from the web site (http://www.liveingreatness.com/):

Your team can be ten times better.
What does that mean?
That means your work team can get 10x more done, do it with 10x more quality, 10x faster, or with 10x less resources. Your family can be 10x happier. Your school can be 10x more effective at helping people learn. Your community group can be 10x better at making life better for the people it serves. Even you yourself can be 10x more effective at getting whatyouwant.
In other words, youcan begreat. Your team can begreat.

Authors of the Core Protocols and the book Software for Your Head (Jim & Michele McCarthy) are coming to Philadelphia November 13-15 to teach us how to build effective teams. The more people that register for the class, the less it costs--but ballpark it will be around $900 per person (spouses can join free). Who's interested? I'm going for sure!

Please spread the news if you know someone that may be interested!
